firstly the sun came out, hooray

secondly and even more welcome Joey didn't put a foot wrong today (once he started concentrating and stopped having a good look at everything around him). He managed to shoulder in, leg yield and, with a placer pole, put in a single stride of canter before a jump and do a double with a placer pole in between - he was a star, am ashamed of all the grumpy thoughts I've been having about him until recently. Clever, beautiful boy

please share yours!

He is a vet, but still a beginner where riding is concerned, but him and the horse get on well.

Bloody kids! DD is very good at the yard luckily - saves the bad behaviour for when i'm stuck feeding the baby Grin

marge2 · 13/11/2010 23:31

He's a vet?!?!?!? - you lucky lucky cow!!!

frostyfingers · 17/11/2010 11:31

Dhorse has had his shoes back on for the first time in 6 months. I'm going to give him a day or two to get used to it, then get on - scary. The fact that it's chucking it with rain today is irrelevant of course!

marge2 · 17/11/2010 11:34

Have you ridden yet Frosty? It's not too bad today weatherwise today (unless you are in Cornwall.)

frostyfingers · 17/11/2010 16:08

No, I haven't had a chance today, and it's vile here - wet and windy. not Cornwall but Shropshire. I thought I'd give him a day to get used to having shoes back on too - he's always a bit sensitive after shoeing, and after a long gap I don't want to rush it. It's only going to be boring walking for the first few weeks anyway but that suits me as I'm very unfit now as well.

Fingers crossed Friday is ok weatherwise!

frostyfingers · 22/11/2010 11:53

Right, I rode for the first time in 6 months on Friday and it was great. It was cold and foggy but dhorse was SO excited that he pranced all the way round snorting and spooking at all the things that have changed in his absence. After about 30 mins he was knackered and very sweaty but really pleased with himself. We went out again on Saturday and he was a bit calmer, but he's now on a break until Friday as I'm stuck working.

My hip (I have bursitis) is still agony, but it was worth it!

AlpinePony · 22/11/2010 12:43

Rode, then lunged, then schooled, then hacked yesterday due to ridiculous behaviour. Not mine! Wink

As I struggled with buckles and cold fingers it occurred to me that the girl whose parents are making her sell her horses deserves a fucking medal. How does ANYONE find time to get pregnant when they're riding 6 horses? Grin

marge2 · 23/11/2010 12:40

She's 17 remember - still a child and we KNOW they have mad amounts of energy!

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 25/11/2010 09:57

Oh god, that one - nutter! When i was 19 i was working in a breaking yard and taking my own clients, so about 8 horses a day, and then my own youngster, and still enjoying a couple of evenings out Wink

Still, can't believe she is blaming her parents though

Managed to ride on sunday, mare was being a donkey and DD was wailing "I want to ride, it's my turn, mummy get orrrrrrrfffff, mummeeeeeeee" Grin hurt the next day, but then came down with gastric flu the day after, so maybe more to do with that.

Hopefully ride again this weekend, also need to finish mare's mane and start on the wild beast gelding Grin

marge2 · 25/11/2010 12:29

I know - total brat! Bloody lucky they haven't thrown her out let alone pay for her herd!

RectalNourishment · 24/12/2010 10:53

I love my sharer.

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 21/01/2011 16:36

This week i have managed to get both horses worked!! Shock

Our horses had their teeth rasped at new year, and DH had a good look in mare's mouth to find a wolf tooth - she will be 10 this year! So that has now been removed and today i rode her for the first time since and there is a definite improvement, no cocking her jaw or hanging.

Lunged gelding a couple of times this week and he looks fab. Hoping to get on him this weekend !

Pixel · 22/01/2011 17:40

Rode out by myself today for the first time in about 15 years. Didn't ride dhorse Blush but pinched sis's pony. As it happened I was very glad to NOT be on dhorse as there was an almighty roar like an earthquake and dpony and I crept round the corner to find a ginormous lorry emptying out road surfacing stuff and a steamroller (or whatever the modern equivalent is called) crunching it all down.

Am very very proud that I didn't get off, or clutch at the reins, even though my legs were literally shaking. After that we only had to negotiate a load of birthday balloons on someone's gate and we were home safe.Smile

I want to do it again now!

sykes · 22/01/2011 19:24

Well done, Pixel. Haven't posted for ages but all going fairly well here, apart from the snow and now have a badly strained shoulder which is making life rather painful and v difficult to ride. He started bucking so had fantastic back lady out and he now seems SO much happier. However, hacked out today and horse was just fantastic after six weeks of virtually no work. Bit silly - head snatching yesterday - but rode him on the buckle today past motor cross site, noisy cows and other slightly spooky things. How's your horse going? The snow was SUCH a pain.

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 22/01/2011 20:10

Well done Pixel!!! That is very positive!

Lunged Gelding over a pole today and he was very sensible, then got on him for literally 2mins at the end and he was very good. Need to do a lot of work with him though as he is so light in the mouth there is literally nothing in front of him atm.

Have been looking on the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) site this evening and have registered Gelding. It is a really good site. Feeling very positive and excited about the horses atm.

Pixel · 22/01/2011 20:26

Hi Sykes. I'm ashamed to say dhorse has done nothing at all since we had the snow. I know I'll have to get on him eventually but I keep putting it off. To be fair though, we can only ride on the road and it's only in the last week or so they haven't been icy or being rained on very hard! (was trying to make up feeds the other day and it was raining so hard the water coming under the door was up to my ankles). My sister has volunteered to get on the beastie first so I'm waiting for her bad back to get a bit better. Yours sounds like he's going well, shame about your shoulder.

Alice, your gelding sounds lovely. I wish mine could have a bit of a lunge but we only have lots of mud to do it in. Roll on summer!

Pixel · 22/01/2011 21:06

Sorry, that last one should have been on the 'negative' thread.Grin

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 22/01/2011 21:18
Grin

We are very lucky where we are now, we have an arena (does get a bit waterlogged and freezes though) and 2 woodchip turnouts which can also be used for lunging when the school freezes. My horses are so chilled at this yard, it is lovely.

ManateeEquineOhara · 23/01/2011 13:08

Gah @ Pixel's water up to ankles!!!

I managed to fit in a quick ride with the mare after work on Friday :)
And DD is doing well in her lessons, :)

I have been spending a lot of time browsing Horsemart. I cannot afford another horse. I am not sure whether my browsing is positive in that light, but I have a little wish list of what I would be now buying if I won the lottery!!!

AliceandtheGinormousBaps · 23/01/2011 21:30

I am always looking up horseboxes Confused as i have the horses, but no way of getting them to places.

Rode Mare today. Was mostly good, but did have a buck then try to bugger off Hmm all because of a 'scary' trailer rattling past on the road - that horse is not scared of a thing! (we were in the school, a big road runs very close by) Such an improvement since her wolf tooth was removed.

Going to ache tomorrow...

Pixel · 23/01/2011 21:55

Ha yes, I spent 2 hours digging a channel in front of the shelters to divert the water that was threatening to come over the sills and flood the floors. I ended up with quite a river going past so it did work but the beasts have trodden it all in again now of course.Angry

marge2 · 26/01/2011 11:47

Wooohoooo!

My girlie went in our littlest paddock for 1/2 an hour for the first time since June on Monday!!! Vet has said she can have 1/2 an hour a day so long as she is in work.

She LOVED it. It was so lovely to see her being a proper horse with her head down. She did have a minor hoolie. Totally understandable..

Things are looking up!!

Butkin · 28/01/2011 15:37

DD took roan pony to Pony Club last night and managed a whole evening of cantering and jumping uprights/tiny spreads without a refusal of a run out which is good news as jumping is not his real job.

Palomino coming along well and DD taking him to an Alastair Hood clinic next weekend so fingers crossed that all goes well with him.

May go to a show on foot tomorrow but we're determined not to take them anywhere for another month as it is going to be a busy year - already downloading schedules and making Royal International qualifier plans!

SupersonicDave · 29/01/2011 11:22

Envy Butkin, i so miss competing every weekend.

Have recently scanned in a load of my pony club pictures into FB, and it has been really nice going through them but does make me feel a little nostalgic for the time before kids Blush only a little though...

Going to ride today.
