firstly the sun came out, hooray

secondly and even more welcome Joey didn't put a foot wrong today (once he started concentrating and stopped having a good look at everything around him). He managed to shoulder in, leg yield and, with a placer pole, put in a single stride of canter before a jump and do a double with a placer pole in between - he was a star, am ashamed of all the grumpy thoughts I've been having about him until recently. Clever, beautiful boy

please share yours!

nice to hear you having so much fun cmot, hope you get that beach ride

Owls · 29/04/2010 22:19

Well the sun is shining (or was anyway) and I had a great lesson on my horse Tuesday. Am also back after an extended holiday courtesy of Volcano Unpronounceable.

sykes · 29/04/2010 22:23

Oh, so nice to see this was just about to go to bed. Am sure you don't remember me but things are going, touch wood, so well. Am riding on my own, okay just walk and trot, but he is so gorgeous, paces are amazing for a five-year old and beyond wonderful on the ground. I adore him. And he was jumped the other day (by a 15-year old) who put me to shame.

Owls · 30/04/2010 08:31

Of course I remember you Seeker!

That really is fantastic news - so hard to believe the change in a matter of weeks isn't it. He's been a very lucky horse to get an owner like you who cared enough to get to the bottom of his problems.

Gah - I want the nerve of a 15yo as well.

sykes · 30/04/2010 14:39

Thanks, Owls. Am SO happy now. Still a long way to go but it's looking good. He hacked out today (me on another horse) and was really well behaved despite v busy main road and lots of potential for spooking. How's it going with you?

Owls · 30/04/2010 22:44

Not too bad thank you. Had a longer break than I planned due to Volcano but my boy was really good being ridden on a lesson for the first time in three weeks. Think we're getting there slowly (oh so slowly, groan) but surely. Hacking out on Sunday weather permitting.

Congratulations on the massive improvements with your horse. Really is some achievement. You'll be hacking out by yourself before you know it.

MitchyInge · 12/05/2010 10:10

Updates updates!

Is all about grooming at the moment I LOVE the furminator, but please remind me to do both sides as sleek and shiny nearside bit ruined by woolly mammoth offside

pulling mane and trimming heels today, and probably give in to rug buying compulsion and get another summer sheet

Not sure what to do with Joey, how hairy should he be? And why is big bit of mane missing?

CMOTdibbler · 15/05/2010 21:07

Had a lovely day today - lesson for me (still won't do more than a few strides of canter in the school, but OK outside - I will get him to do it though), then went for a picnic with DS's little friend, her shetland, mum and puppy. Lots of running alongside pony for me as DS wanted to trot. Pony was in shock

Went to look at new cars for DH this afternoon - he has decided to get a Freelander suitable for towing a horsebox . He likes to be prepared

Alicetheinvisible · 18/05/2010 17:46

i am on box rest for a couple of days and today is my first day away from the horses and i am MISERABLE.

Butkin · 18/05/2010 21:17

Picked up DD's new pony today. Haven't sold either of the LRs so this FR schoolmaster has been taken to a pro-yard to produce for us for the summer. Hopefully this allow DD to learn to canter and perfect her FR show during lessons in their menage.

Might take roan LR to do FYFR show this weekend.

MitchyInge · 24/05/2010 22:14

I came 2nd in the gymkhana !

YAY ME! And Barney!

CMOTdibbler · 24/05/2010 22:17

Go Barney !

I rode to the pub last week - it was fab having a really long ride (3 hours) and turning up at the pub on horses and chucking them in the overflow car park. Having to get a leg up after a nice pint was more fun

sykes · 25/05/2010 08:53

Am now schooling horse on my own. Sounds pathetic, I know, but massive achievement for me and also cantered first time yesterday - with instructor around. Rather onwards bound but containable. He's still very sensitive and hates those plastic jump things - really hates them and was really silly when a friend jumped him at the weekend - completely freaked out and was hurtling round the school But .... his walk and trot are getting beautifully established, working and medium trot and, despite the canter being too fast, it's so comfortable and he does settle. Everyone thinks his paces are really promising. Am really enjoying him at the moment. Challenges ahead but he's such a sweetheart and we have as long as it takes. Weather has helped enormously. I think he needs to take things slowly (as do I) but we're getting there. How's everyone else?

Pixel · 25/05/2010 18:04

Hi Sykes, so glad to hear you are doing so well with your boy. Are we going to see any pics?

Butkin · 25/05/2010 19:58

Took DD to ride new Sec B for the first time and she got on really well. Only walking and trotting today but did a couple of strides of canter by mistake when kicked on too hard. She is still thrilled by him which is a relief - you always wonder if you've wasted your money!

sykes · 26/05/2010 12:19

Pixel, am rather computer illiterate but will try to get some photos taken and try and work out how to do links etc. How are things with you?

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 26/05/2010 12:44

After being messed about by the owner of my chosen stallion, who has managed to injure himself, I am now actively looking for a replacement. The situation has made me think positively about the whole thing again, and start to use my initiative regarding the choice of stallion, and not just stick to what my more knowledgeable friend told me to do! Im feeeling really proud of myself!

Butkin · 26/05/2010 13:05

Sounds really interesting Saggy. What bred of stallion are you going to and what do you hope to produce? We're involved with Thoroughbreds but follow the breeding of Connemaras and Welshies as well! Look forward to hearing all your news.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 26/05/2010 14:08

Welsh a Butkin. We were given her as a permanent lamer, and she has been sound for 4 years so far. Discovered she has some very good breeding, (by pendock legend, and more than 5o% coed coch, with criban and clan as well! I want to see how good a foal ahe produces with a trad bred stallion. :-)

Pixel · 26/05/2010 20:29

Sykes, I'm clueless about computers too (luckily dh isn't otherwise this one wouldn't even be working by now ) but after some trial and error I've found out how to put pics on my profile as there are instructions (sort of anyway).

I'm a bit 'one step forward, two steps back' with dhorse atm. I ride him one day and come back feeling quite positive and a bit brave, and the next time it all goes horribly wrong.

Anyway am taking steps to hopefully get us both on the right track, after half-term we are going to another yard for a month. They have fantastic facilities and my instructor is based there so fingers crossed!

sykes · 27/05/2010 08:59

That sounds a great move, Pixel. It is a bit of a long haul but, hopefully, it's worth it. Are there pictures of dhorse to see? What's the main issue at the moment. I need to focus on control, control, control. He had physio again yesterday and the osteo said he is definitely sore but nothing too drastic. She also gave me loads of advice about how to help muscle development re schooling and what to focus on. He's very collected and needs to work long and low to stretch out. She then said if I ever think of selling let her know. Which was nice - she's an eventer and has a lot of experience with Irish sports horses and thinks as long as we take it slowly (no danger of that not happening ...) he should be a very nice horse. Good luck if you're riding today.

Butkin · 27/05/2010 15:56

Hi Saggy, very exciting - let me know which stallion you have chosen.

The old Sec A bay mare that DD learned to ride on was by Foxgate Sul-Y-Pasg.

DD's two Sec A LR geldings are by Randan Walter (the roan) and Swinford Sputnik (the palomino). Her new Sec B FR (palomino) is by Nantcol Figurehead.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 27/05/2010 21:17

I have a short list of stallions..Weston lady killer, tiffwyl moonshine, heniarth quip, sunwillow vierra and farchynys andreas. Am going to view them all before I decide.

frostyfingers · 28/05/2010 10:06

Saggy - glad to hear Coed Coch bloodlines still going around, my family used to be involved with them and I helped prepare Coed Coch Bari at the dispersal sale (I was only about 10 at the time I might add, in case you think I'm ancient and decrepit!).

I'm very jealous of you all riding at the moment, my dhorse is off the road for 3 months following sarcoid treatment. I'm eyeing up my 12.2 round barrell of a pony but I'm not sure I'm brave enough as it would have to be bear back, and he is very round and very bouncy.....

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 28/05/2010 16:47

Why would you have to be bareback? Is it just saddle size? Do you have a felt pad, they are great, just that little more security than bareback!
Re the stallions, I haven't seen the coed coch stallion yet, but I am in love with Heniarth Quip. He's stunning, and has the qualities I need to put to my mare.
