Cleveland Bay crosses were very popular a good few years ago but have become not so popular now due to the CB having a reputation for having a less than obliging temperament and the increasing popularity of warmbloods combined with the ease of importing them.

today's horse: gyspy vanner

Or, with the aid of clippers, the coloured cob! Mine is thoroughly de-haired ...

Pixel · 13/01/2009 19:32

Wish mine looked like that. He's not coloured but I was told he could be shown as a traditional cob. However, he has a mane like a bush and his feathers don't look at all silky so I think it's all coming off in the spring. Assuming I can get near him with the clippers that is.

Do any clever people know what a Blagdon cob is? I'd never heard of it before but I've seen a couple of horses advertised that were the spitting image of ours (showed stepdad one and he thought it was a photo of ours), and they were described as Blagdon cobs.

mysterymoniker · 13/01/2009 21:34

lovely lovely Friesian today

Blagdon is a colouration type. It's a solid colour with white hairs mixed in (can vary from a few to loads) which come up from the belly. If there are a lot of white hairs it'll give almost a roan appearance. Usually with white legs and often splashes of white on the belly and a blaze. What does your cob look like, Pixel?

snorris · 13/01/2009 21:57

Blagdon is used to describe a solid coloured horse with white splashed up from underneath. A lot of them have some roaning too, I think.

Loshad · 13/01/2009 22:43

MM - are you choosing horse of the day? (or is it some other website i've missed from the link with the lovely suffolk punch mare and foal on) If so can I nominate - in no particular order - the Exmoor (also endangered), the Connemara and the TB for future days please

Pixel · 13/01/2009 22:54

Loshad, I was just thinking about suggesting the Exmoor! I've always wanted one and they are my favourite native. Great minds think alike eh?

Thanks Nekabu and Snorris, it looks like my boy is a Blagdon then! He is most definitely roan, lots of little white hairs all over and he has plenty of white splashes. White hind legs, white face, white underneath his jaw and some small ones on his belly. There are a few pics on my profile but I've been trying to find one that shows his underside a bit clearer. The only one I could find was of him as a 2 yr old (day we went to look at him, we were told he was 3) which does show under his jaw. Should I put Blagdon on his passport? I've got to get it changed because it has his date of birth wrong so if there is anything else needs changing I suppose I might as well.

LadyOfWaffle · 13/01/2009 22:56

Oh my that gypsy vanner pic is amazing, that is my dream horse.

Loshad · 13/01/2009 22:57

I've always wanted one too Pixel - was tres envious to meet up with someone i used to go to school with (the odd 25y + ago) and discover she had a couple. Hmm wonder if DH would notice.....

LadyOfWaffle · 13/01/2009 22:57

more... oooh, such a beautiful horse!

OOOOOH I used to share an exmoor she was my favourite pony ever, so cheeky and fun.
Pixel have you tried giving your horse linseed? I used simple systems feed for my mare (now sadly on loan but happily going to be a mummy I'm so excited, she is a welsh sec d, will have to try and add a pic to profile in a mo) and it made her coat AMAZING! So shiny and lovely looking, made a real difference as she had a tendency towards looking a bit dull, bless her gorgeousness! I have a thing about long haired natives being left to have very long hair, all my horsey friends tend to lop their forelocks off, grr!

Pixel · 13/01/2009 23:09

The rest of his coat gets a lovely shine, even his tail is beautiful in the summer with lots of auburn and blonde highlights. It's just his mane and feathers are so thick and horrid. I agree about the forelocks though, my mum had a part-bred shire that she used to keep hogged but we could never bring ourselves to take off his forelock! We've already agreed that if we do hog dhorse we will be leaving the forelock on .

pamplemousse · 13/01/2009 23:34

Oh, good luck with the clippers then
He looks lovely btw

Pixel · 13/01/2009 23:37

Thanks, can't wait to see pics of mum and foal. When is it due?

pamplemousse · 13/01/2009 23:43

Not sure my friend is being vague, my friend loaned her from me and has since had a baby and her mum now has adopted my mare as she is so very cuddly! It was a random oh we found a stallion text, so don't know if shes actually been covered yet or whether its in the pipeline, ooh thats not the most appropriate of phrases...
Will keep you posted cute foal pics are always good to share with fellow horsey people

mysterymoniker · 14/01/2009 07:51

I was thinking about Exmoors or Dartmoors when I made my way to this thread! Feel strongly about our native breeds and have a weakness for fluffy (I know they are called feathers ) feet so that's why I've chosen these ones so far.

here are some that give me mild horn 3 Exmoor stallions

mysterymoniker · 14/01/2009 08:35

ahhhh he is nice another exmoor

Nekabu · 14/01/2009 17:12

Pixel, I can't really see your horse's colour from your photo but he's got a lovely face! You say you're thinking of showing him in Traditional classes? If so, you would need to keep the feathers. Have you tried pig oil?

Pixel · 14/01/2009 17:38

It was the face we fell in love with, how could anyone resist?! We weren't intending to get such a baby though!

We were just told he was eligible for traditional classes by someone who knows their stuff, plus our vet thinks he is 'a lovely example', so were were dreaming wondering, as you do...
In reality though, I think showing will be too expensive what with transport etc so will probably never happen!

Pixel · 14/01/2009 19:25

Those exmoors are gorgeous btw. Funny how I think the friesians are lovely to look at but would never want to own one, but I would have an exmoor like a shot. If I can ever afford to get a pony for ds that is what I would love him to have.

pamplemousse · 14/01/2009 19:30

Gorgeous exmoors will try and get pic of 'mine'.
How come I don't have the little symbol you click on to view peoples pictures? Can people not see my wonderful mare? Oh and my beautiful child ;)

Pixel · 14/01/2009 19:59

When I put my pics on there was a bit where you can say if you want them to be public or not. Maybe that has something to do with it? Have a look at your profile page and see if there is anything like that.
