You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to others just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

There is nothing at all in the guidance from school to say that a pupil should not take an LfT if they have had Covid in the last 90 days. Probably a good job they are only 47% accurate!

RandomGrammarPun · 26/02/2021 18:07

Yeah, the administration would make it difficult.

I'm not arguing we deserve them anymore than other categories. Teachers and school staff are not at (much) increased risk of death. Because we are, on average, healthier than other groups. We are at increased risk of catching it. They're lying about that.

That's not the point any more. The point is the govt and the senior scientists/advisers continuing this narrative of pushing back against any concern.

Like Piggy said, I wish they'd move on to talking about police or something instead.

Glad you're okay, Piggy. I think you were missed!

RandomGrammarPun · 26/02/2021 18:08

Any more not anymore!

Am bad Mam? My dd has slept through a couple of live lessons of period 1. As I have said on here I was signed off work with anxiety so I have had a few bad nights with anxiety and panic. I work at the school dd goes too. So we have had a few texts to say she hadn't accessed first lesson.

I am now back full time. We have to go in every day. My dds friend is going into school. So I got dd a place Mon Wed and Fri at her request. She went in on Wednesday for the first time and is now dramatically saying it was the worst day ever and she can't go back as it affects her mental health. Her reasons being that most of her friends aren't there. It's embarrassing being two kids in a class and the chips are stale at lunch.

She now doesn't want to go in until everyone is back. Citing mental health back at me.

I don't know what to do for the best.

HarrietDVane · 26/02/2021 18:15

Good to see you back Piggy - commiserations on the job, but I'm glad your migraine has lifted a little.

We have been thrown under a bus. I am so sick of politicians telling me it's safe to spend six hours a day in a small, unventilated room with 30+ unmasked people of questionable social habits. I'm in my late 40s, mildly asthmatic and obese (and although I'm working on that last one, I don't have a magic wand to fix it overnight). Sad

On top of my general anxiety over Covid, SLT are ploughing on with the usual assessments, observations etc etc as if there is nothing at all amiss Angry

JanFebAnyMonth · 26/02/2021 18:21

Oh riga, quite a bit of what you say I could have written.
What year is yr DD?

It's funny isn't it, the way their generation is both aware of mental health in a sensible way, but also they love to use it as an excuse to get out of things.....

CarrieBlue · 26/02/2021 18:26

Spoke to my doctor friend today on the park, she says the admin of finding teachers/registering etc would make it slower to sinister the vaccine than just rolling it out by age as they've got all the data.

You set up a vaccine point in the school hall. The staff walk through and are vaccinated. It seems to work for flu/hpv/meningitis when there’s 10 times the number of bodies.

Done in a morning, off to another school in the afternoon. I’m sorry, I don’t believe your gp friend.

CarrieBlue · 26/02/2021 18:26

Sorry, assumed gp there, apologies

GuyFawkesDay · 26/02/2021 18:29

Not a GP.

Not enought teams to go out to schools, teachers would have to go to centres. It's not logistically sensible to try and find, confirm, register, book and vaccinate. In that time far more people could be booked on and vaccinated by age.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but they have to go with efficiency.

motherrunner · 26/02/2021 18:30

Exactly. Every year we have the flu vaccine at school. All staff done in one day. This is bollocks.
GuyFawkesDay · 26/02/2021 18:30

Never had flu jab in school either. Always had to book via doctor or Boots and send receipt for reimbursement.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/02/2021 18:31

You know how teachers say people outside teaching don't understand schools?

Maybe we should trust doctors and virologists on this?

MrsHamlet · 26/02/2021 18:35

Our LA sends flu vouchers into school but I live outside the LA so I can't use it at home

piggywaspushed · 26/02/2021 18:36

The thing is , doctors and virologists don't agree with each other, especially on children and schools.

And it is different from every other country too. I can't believe the Germans would do something inefficient and they are vaccinating school staff.

piggywaspushed · 26/02/2021 18:37

I have never had a flu jab via school.

TheHoneyBadger · 26/02/2021 18:38

No opinion here and suggest an agree to disagree. Times are stressful.

Very glad I didn't watch the briefing.

Got a parent email about return to school. Ds, year 9, will be last back on Friday 12th March. Nothing in terms of staff information though so no idea how it's happening.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/02/2021 18:39

Then again we are way ahead of Germany vaccination wise?

It's a case of doing as many people as fast as possible. No system is perfect, but I can see why the decision has been made this way.

piggywaspushed · 26/02/2021 18:40

Hmmmmm. I just am not convinced that this isn't so we can do a bit of British bragging.

We'll see, I guess!

GuyFawkesDay · 26/02/2021 18:44

Who knows.

We are testing from next week, everyone back in on 9th.

DS (Yr7) getting first test next week too.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 26/02/2021 18:59

I can see the logistical argument. However there are centres running below capacity and teachers desperate. I'd drive an hour for one if I could get it! Why not utilise that spare capacity, let teachers book online and no ID card, no jab. Those that really want it can get it and doesn't slow the other groups as the capacity is there. Unlikely to be many chancers.

I also think GPs should find space for anyone that rings and begs. There can't be that many teachers ringing and begging for it, just give it us!

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 26/02/2021 19:01

Setting up a vaccine centre at every school site is hugely inefficient. It'd be better for kids to go to centralised vaccine centres for HPV etc but they're more likely to get it done if it's somewhere the kids already are. Hence the issues with transport and kids first in school LFTs. Difference between the kids and staff is (most) of us have transport so can get to a vaccine centre.

CallmeAngelina · 26/02/2021 19:04

Just had my bloody brother quoting JVT on the press conference at me!
Angry
I said it was complete bollocks and I will not discuss it with him as it makes me too angry.
He apologised.

She is year 8 that's exactly it. No happy medium.
KatherineOfGaunt · 26/02/2021 19:08

I can confirm that SEN staff have been done on a postcode lottery basis. I have not been vaccinated. We have Deaf pupils and use BSL or SSE with them. BSL interpreters are being vaccinated, but apparently working in a school doing the same thing isn't the same at all.

That's what I'm fucked off about. The age thing is fine. But for some SEN staff or people working in similar roles to be vaccinated in some places and not in other places, rather than a national approach is ridiculous. Our speech and language therapist has been done and she's working from home. But she does a very similar job to me in terms of close proximity and face-to-face?!

piggywaspushed · 26/02/2021 19:12

Just bought my new fridge freezer. Phoned up to haggle over prices. Lovely lady (I know she was trying to sell me stuff but I'll take it) saying how wonderful teachers are and how she could never do our job and what stars we have all been.
