You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

@mumsneedwine

Did LFT with our KW kids this morning. And 2 bubbles now closed due to positive results. 9 staff isolating. Going well so far !
That's a great start to the half term mums. I hope you're ok.

"Murder yeti" did make me laugh. There's not much making me laugh today, so I needed that.

The ONS data did not make me laugh. It pretty much makes me want to cry. I want to know why my friend who is on mat leave with no underlying conditions has been added to the shielding list. She says the only thing she can think of is that she had gestational diabetes when pregnant, but baby is 6months now, she's no longer diabetic, and she's back to a healthy weight as well. So why is she supposed to be shielding when I am currently, actively fat (less fat than I was but still classed as obese) and diabetic with not great control? It really doesn't seem to make sense.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/02/2021 14:25

The GD bods need to speak to their GPs - lots are being told it's not a 'thing'. Trying to speak to a GP at the moment is quite hard going though. You are 37th in the queue.

CallmeAngelina · 22/02/2021 14:26

Welcome to @WindFlower92

How did you find us? There have been references to us on some of the main boards as some of our bashers lurk on here too.

SansaSnark · 22/02/2021 14:35

@appuskidu A lot of ours get school busses so will effectively be stranded at school unless a parent can come and get them. I imagine we'll need some kind of holding area for positive tests.

In other news, the metro are reporting masks for all secondary students from 8th March including in the classroom which would be an interesting development.

Not sure what we will do with the 5-10% who consistently refuse to wear masks!

MsAwesomeDragon · 22/02/2021 14:40

That's a good point sansa. We've not got many who don't wear a mask at all, but there are loads who think it's fine to wear it under their nose, or pull it away from their face to talk 🤦

Appuskidu · 22/02/2021 14:41

There was a poster from Spain on another thread over the weekend who said that kids who didn’t wear masks at school were sent home until they did.

WindFlower92 · 22/02/2021 14:41

I think I'm even more worried about the masks announcement - we had barely any pupils wear masks in the corridors last time round, so I imagine we'll have a lot of 'exempt' pupils or ones who just can't wear them properly. But when you bring it up with management they say there isn't a problem as all pupils have been told to wear masks...

Appuskidu · 22/02/2021 14:44

Can imagine our small ones will be wearing a mask, but will staff now be 100% teaching in them?

If so, has anyone got any recommendations for one that’s comfortable to wear for long periods, doesn’t steam glasses up and doesn’t feel like you are going to inhale a big wedge of cloth every time you inhale?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/02/2021 14:45

Don't wear cloth ones, or if you do, go for quite stiff cloth - not jersey fabric - proper cotton. That's been my experience anyway.

Timeturnerplease · 22/02/2021 14:57

Thanks for the new thread. Hope someone brought the leftover booze in.

@WindFlower92 Pregnant here too! 16 weeks though, so a while off yet. HT nervous though re new shielding letters to people with history of GD, like me. Can’t afford to have me at home though and an entire class with no cover. Bet Boris hasn’t thought of costs of shielding staff....

Bloody Anne Longfield:

"The Children's Commissioner for England has told BBC Radio 5 Live's Naga Munchetty she wants school buildings in England to remain open during the summer.

Anne Longfield said it would help children to recover after the pandemic.

"There is an opportunity here for kids to explore and experience things in different ways, to have more time at school," she said.

She said it wasn't about teachers doing more.

"It's actually about opening up those resources, those sports halls, those art rooms, those swimming pools so that others in the community - charities, families, youth workers, can make the most of that resource in the community.

"Schools are much more than education, they're anchor points for us all, they are the place we trust, they're the place where our children grow up," she added."

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 15:00

I actually can't think of a local school that isn't open in the summer! Or a group of schools as a hub.

Also, private schools do this and could extend it as part of their charity status.

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 15:02

Face Dfndr ones are good because they come in sizes and have a wire at the top. I have lost my Nicola sturgeon Slanj one so am a bit sad.

Monkeytennis97 · 22/02/2021 15:02

Excellent for teaching with a mask on Smile

So tired. Have just given Yr 7 a comprehension exercise and I’ve switched my screen off. I need a proper cry, I mean break, before parents evening.

GravityFalls · 22/02/2021 15:15

In briefing today our SLT expressly told us to finish lessons early/ give students independent work to do so that we could get away from out desks and go for a walk etc. Don't feel obliged to sit at your computer all day, was the message. Might have been nice to hear that six weeks ago, as I feel terrible about doing anything else during work hours.

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 15:18

Be nice if I could do that instead of a sodding meeting!

ChloeDecker · 22/02/2021 15:23

those swimming pools so that others in the community

Yes, those swimming pools that all schools have Hmm

And when will schools have the time to fix and maintain these buildings?

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 15:24

Rebecca Long Bailey has our back. Unfortunately she is a Marxist Trotskyite Cobynite Commie loving Union supporting female MP.

Ah. Labour , Quo Vadis?

StaffRepFeistyClub · 22/02/2021 15:35

@WindFlower92

Ooh I'm joining this thread, I didn't know you all hid in here! I'm going to be 29 weeks pregnant on 8th March and my union has said they'll support me in a request to wfh, but I can already tell my school will tell me it's safe to be in when it's not! Clashing with family aswell because they're all desperate for their kids to go back so apparently I'm selfish in not wanting the same for them! Definitely looking for a new job soon, this year has completely worn me down.
Welcome @WindFlower92 We have been hiding here since last March but the Republic almost fell recently as some people didn't know who Chris/Thor.

If a Republic thread is late to start then there is the temporary broom cupboard to hide in. But I have to warn you that in the broom cupboard the biscuits are stale and only the very sweet sherry is left to drink along with a random holiday liquor.
