You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

So hard isn't it. At least with a bright kid we have ways back when we're ready itms.

JanFebAnyMonth · 25/02/2021 09:57

So how will appeals work. Who will the appeal be to, if schools have decided the grades? Are teachers going to de facto lose half their holidays dealing with multiple appeals?

MsAwesomeDragon · 25/02/2021 10:04

Does anyone know about entry levels? Are they going to be CAGs as well? Or do I still have to do all the tests and worksheets as evidence? I have 2 kids who are too weak mathematically to access the GCSE, so they're doing entry level, but having missed 2 terms (because obviously they're the ones who can't cope with remote learning but aren't coming into school either) we haven't had time to do all 8 tests/worksheets. Do any of the SEN teachers know?

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2021 10:15

I’m willing to bet that they’ve forgotten about entry level, BTEC, private candidates or some other group.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 25/02/2021 10:30

Sounds like further bedlam frankly.

MrsHamlet · 25/02/2021 10:41

They won't have forgotten entry level. They just won't know or care about those kids.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 25/02/2021 10:45

Is it just me that thinks schools LF testing kids days before the 8th is a complete waste of time and missing the point slightly?

echt · 25/02/2021 10:52

Surely this a heads up to closure is schools? The word "hoped" is not entirely encouraging:

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 25/02/2021 10:57

What a complete clusterfuck. Wear masks but also don’t wear masks if you don’t feel like it.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 25/02/2021 11:00

@msawesomedragon Edexcel entry level maths is the same. What board are you doing?

Edexcel have altered some of the entry levels, if you Google it says which as I cane remember off the top of my head.

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2021 11:00

Fucksake. Just completely undermine the whole thing why don’t you.

This is in response to batshit Us4Them crying about child abuse but instead of talking about exemptions it just says ‘don’t bother’.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 25/02/2021 11:01

Also submitted on 18th June doesn't mean they need to be in until then. Its not like they can take a test on the 17th and suddenly get a different grade, we need time to evaluate all the evidence.

BigBobBoots · 25/02/2021 11:04

Why would it be optional to wear masks in school but obligatory on a bus?

Icytundra · 25/02/2021 11:11

The mask thing makes me feel even worse. Kids are not going to wear them if they are optionsl

BigBobBoots · 25/02/2021 11:19

Are there any other countries where masks are optional in classrooms?

MsAwesomeDragon · 25/02/2021 11:29

@noblegiraffe

I’m willing to bet that they’ve forgotten about entry level, BTEC, private candidates or some other group.
Of course they will have done. Maybe it's ok and I can just CAG those kids as a 1 in the GCSE Hmm I won't, because they genuinely wouldn't get a grade in the GCSE, but it seems very tempting, and I suspect a lot of teachers will be under pressure to put everyone down for a grade, even if they aren't going to get it.
SansaSnark · 25/02/2021 11:30

The BBC seem to really be pushing the agenda that masks are optional.

Presumably individual schools can still enforce it? But we've already got parents complaining about it.

My head is very hot on mask wearing but he's also not the one directly having to enforce it.

MsAwesomeDragon · 25/02/2021 11:33

I don't think they'll be optional at my school. We'll make the kids wear them in the classrooms now the guidance says we can. Anyone exempt already has a small badge to wear on their blazers, so that's catered for, but we'll be a "masks are part of your uniform for the minute" school.

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2021 11:34

We had a kid who we CAGd as a U be awarded a 1 by the algorithm (which then stood as the best grade) even though that child couldn’t reliably add two single digit numbers, MsAwesome.

I think tbh the difference between a U and a 1 doesn’t open many doors?

TheHoneyBadger · 25/02/2021 11:34

I'm optimistically interpreting that it is optional for individual schools rather than individual kids.

MsAwesomeDragon · 25/02/2021 11:35

I'm in school today as the car needs it's MOT done and the garage is close to school. I'd forgotten quite how cold my classroom is, and that's without the windows open!! My feet are like ice! I'll be going for a walk at lunchtime, just to warm up!

MsAwesomeDragon · 25/02/2021 11:37

No, I agree that a 1 doesn't open many doors. There are a couple of college courses they want to do which would let them onto a higher level course with a 1 though. But they're still pretty basic courses. And yes, we had a couple who we CAGed as Us that were put up to 1s in the algorithm, I'd forgotten about that.

ineedaholidaynow · 25/02/2021 11:38

Gavin has just said masks should be worn in classroom but that they are only a temporary measure to help with the safe return of schools and will only be required upto Easter (didn't mention that it would be reviewed which I thought was the plan)

noblegiraffe · 25/02/2021 11:41

It was pointed out on twitter that Gav should be doing the briefing tonight.

Instead he did it yesterday, dodged questions by saying ‘it’s only right this is announced in Parliament’ then briefed the papers before the announcement anyway.

SansaSnark · 25/02/2021 11:49

Gavin is just an incompetent twat isn't he.

But what does a minister have to do to be pushed out of Johnson's cabinet?
