You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

Anything you can take to help you sleep Enemy? I have melatonin, valium and night nurse but sadly still no teleporter.

Do you try those sleep hypnosis tracks on you tube? You're going to need the rest for tomorrow. I'm not working so not stressed about being wide awake. Today has driven me to chocolate.

TheHoneyBadger · 23/02/2021 00:45

I know it's trite but it's a bit of a serenity prayer type situation - accept the things I cannot change. We don't have the power in this or the ultimate responsibility and our worrying won't change anything. It's still 2 weeks away and for now everything is the same. I can't remember if you're secondary or primary sorry.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 23/02/2021 00:59

Are you OK, Enemy?

TheHoneyBadger · 23/02/2021 01:12

People are bonkers. I keep seeing terms like, 'mask lovers' used Hmm Utterly bizarre.

Any kind of mitigation in school is outrageous apparently. It's ok for the supermarket and the chemist and the doctors etc but not in schools.

TaxTheRatFarms · 23/02/2021 01:20

I wouldn’t say I’m a mask lover as such, but there is something about a handsome man with a strong nose wearing a mask that’s ever so slightly to loose (or too small?) that slips down when they talk, so they have to push it back up into place... mmmm.

Oh god. Was this how Victorian men felt about ladies ankles?? What have I become! Blush Send help..

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2021 01:27

For Tax 😂

Blimey. Virtually driving around Istanbul is nearly as perilous as actually driving around. Grin

Hope you are not waking up to lots of stress SquashedFlyBiscuits
Your techies are so so in the wrong here. They should have file restoring software for files even not backed up. If they don’t, words fail me (and I have actually left a school due to poor IT technicians so I do understand how bad they can be!)

Hope you’re ok this morning Enemy

Day 2 of talking into the abyss also known as live lessons with teenagers

Sigh.

motherrunner · 23/02/2021 06:38

Morning all,

We break up Maundy Thursday too. Was supposed to be an inset but that day was moved to before Christmas when Gav in his kindness said we could break up early.

I also want to know how we can test 7 year groups 3x in one week. We now have a testing ‘centre’ set up. It’s the school hall that only can accommodate one year group as it’s so small (Victorian school), we don’t have whole school assemblies. Still that’s not for me to worry about, above my pay grade!

My parents evening went well for Performing Arts. First year it’s been in the curriculum and parents were so positive about it, even with most lessons being online. One dad said it was the lesson his daughter looked forward to the most! So that was a pleasant end to a shitty day.

Got a good day today. Finish off with double Yr 13 and despite the absolute shit they’ve suffered over the past year, not one of them complains. They’re working hard, looking forward to Uni, don’t let the exams debacle hang over them. I’m going to miss them when they leave.

WhenSheWasBad · 23/02/2021 06:48

squashedfly I’m so sorry about your laptop. I’d be beside myself.

HarrietDVane · 23/02/2021 06:54

@SquashedFlyBiscuits I am so sorry about your files. It's sickening. I hope the IT bods can recover them.

@EnemyOfEducationNo1 I hope you managed to get some sleep. Insomnia is so bloody miserable.

Good luck today, everyone. See you later.

Timeturnerplease · 23/02/2021 07:15

Oh goodness, I broke a USB stick once and lost two years’ worth of work. The feeling is sickening.

I really really hope you either the files back.

SansaSnark · 23/02/2021 07:27

My local news is reporting that returns to secondary school could be staggered over two weeks in schools that can't test the school population in one week (so that would be all of them then?).

Apparently this is allowed, although no doubt it won't be popular with parents.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but the NEU sent out a survey last night, so hopefully if members feel strongly they will take some action.

echt · 23/02/2021 07:32

This has made me get out the back-up disk tonight.

Fingers crossed for you all today.

SquashedFlyBiscuits · 23/02/2021 07:37

Have sent an email to ICT guy and have everything crossed.

Feeling so cross about schools. Just feeling so upset about everything. Not sure if DH is going to go back until he has had at least 1st vaccine dose. He is speaking to gp. He's over 60.

It is so horrible for so many school staff to be put in this position. Flowers for everyone this morning.

9pmcouchnaps · 23/02/2021 07:44

Hi all, would love to join in if I may? I am a secondary NQT this year (username is from PGCE last year!) I am a long long time lurker on mumsnet but this seems like a less terrifying space to post! Covid teaching is... a lot, isn’t it! I have two children of my own, and the thought of us all being back in school full time in two weeks is overwhelming...

MrsHamlet · 23/02/2021 07:46

You get to 9pm before a couch nap? You're hardcore. Welcome!

RandomGrammarPun · 23/02/2021 07:47

Good luck, Squashed Fly... Presume you have nothing saved in the cloud? Sad

I'm just thinking that with the disruption we know there's going to be doing all the testing in secondary, therefore less learning, surely it would have been better to keep with remote learning until Easter for secondary and then ask all the children to get a proper test at a test centre in the second week of Easter? The mass testing centres should be less busy by then as rates continue to fall? I'm sure they'd learn more that way.

borntobequiet · 23/02/2021 08:13

I look good in a mask because though I say it myself I'm in really good shape - however my face shows all of my 67 years...but the mask hides all the saggy jowly bits. I've had blokes eyeing up my arse and not getting the look of horror at the face. It's quite nice. Clearly I'm not the feminist I thought I was.

WhenSheWasBad · 23/02/2021 08:19

Hi 9pmcouch I’m an NQT too.

I’m hoping teaching in normal times is a little less stressful than this year.

I find the disparity between the way people react when they find out you are a teacher in real life and they way people talk about teachers online quite shocking.

Mind you the way some of the parents spoke about my daughters teacher on WhatsApp wasn’t to pleasant either. Poor woman is trying to control a class online, doesn’t need parents bitching about her behind her back.

Especially when the main reason she’s struggling is that a lot of those children are appalling entitled. Which is mostly down to the parents.

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 23/02/2021 08:22

Morning. Sorry for being dramatic last night.
It's still shit though.
Listened to a lot of radio4 comedy through the early hours.
It's not just the pandemic. Or the incompetent corrupt government. Or the schools thing. Or the neighbours problems. Or the family problem. Or the endless mud. Squabbling kids. Groundhog Day etc.
I know I should be grateful that we have food, shelter, health. Lots have it worse. But it still feels shit.

WhenSheWasBad · 23/02/2021 08:38

Listening to radio 4.

Talk seems to alternate between saying how cautious the prime minister is being. Then someone comes on and talks about how reopening schools will definitely increase the R rate and Covid will spread. One expert said he would have held off till after Easter.

Then it’s back to “oh look how cautious Boris is being” Confused
