You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

How did those ONS statistics mange to become so manipulated that people are now 'reading' them to show that indeed teachers are bleating and are at no risk and people lower down on that table are performing heroic actions and feats and placing themselves at terrible risk?

Some people just really hate us.

The point is in none of these other riskier jobs does the PM come on telly and tell them their workplace is safe! Surely??

The idea that it doesn't matter because we won't get very ill or die is also spectacularly missing the point that teacher absence is highly disruptive to the running of schools!

A bracing arm punch to those of us feeling a bit, or a lot, crap. Special online curses to blasé IT People Shock

I am on a course at home this morning. Which is nice. I count hours exposed to Covid in school so any amount off those hours is a bonus.

DS had a Bob as a friend in Yrs7-11. Not a close friend, as Bob, like a cat, preferred to walk alone. DS was initially put next to him in classes as one of those Calming Influences which don’t work. I really enjoyed the tales of Bob’s escapades. They included the traditional Cock Drawn In Surprising Places but far transcended such amateurishness on many occasions. I stopped prefacing my laughter with well of course, I don’t approve of that but.....
Bob was accused of racism once. Not his style at all and DS was happy to be able to tell the HOY that at the time of the incident Bob was actually with him, far, far away.
Bob drifted off after Yr11, but his hopes of ‘travel’ were sadly curtailed by Covid. I have no doubt he will be out there as soon as he can, wreaking quiet, sardonic havoc wherever he goes.

I think we just need to look our for ourselves now and reduce contact at much as we can - no more clubs, mentoring, revision classes, trips - just in and out the classroom and home.

Mind you the way some of the parents spoke about my daughters teacher on WhatsApp wasn’t to pleasant either. Poor woman is trying to control a class online, doesn’t need parents bitching about her behind her back.

Hi whenshewasbad,
One of the best things I did at the start of lockdown 1 was to come off parent WhatsApp groups. The bitching about the school and the teachers was something that was really upsetting me, even though it was just a handful. I've not been added back since, and someone usually remembers to let me know when they need money for the class collection!

None of us needs to have WhatsApp versions of the main MN boards pinging on our phones during these stressful times.

I’m not in the class whatsapp group - nowhere is my friend who has a child in same class - and the mums think we’re uppity but when I was in many years ago it was just bitching about other parents. There is a school Facebook page which I have to be on and all school announcements are made through it. The deputy often had to write ‘I am now turning off announcements on this thread as it seems to have become emotive’. I admire her patience. Especially when it comes to answering ‘So is school back on Monday?’ (after a holiday). I want to write ‘you’re in the internet. Google it dumbass’.

@RandomGrammarPun I was thinking exactly the same re: testing. It’s going to be a chaotic couple of weeks and it needn’t be. If they were really worried about ‘lost learning’ they’d have made alternative plans.

motherrunner · 23/02/2021 09:23

Reported that post @noblegiraffe from that Fred poster.

looseddaughter · 23/02/2021 09:46

I give up - even John Crace is writing that it's a reasonable plan and Johnson has learnt his lesson Sad.

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2021 09:49

I've reported a lot, mother, it's clear that people just want to have a go even on a thread that's just supposed to be helpful info.

HerdyGerdy · 23/02/2021 09:56

I know I should be grateful that we have food, shelter, health.

Enemy - that is what’s known as the ‘starving children in Africa gambit’ in our house. You are allowed to feel like shit - other people struggling doesn’t mitigate your emotions. And if you can’t sleep tonight, try night nurse. Knocks you straight out 😂

GravityFalls · 23/02/2021 10:07

As a diversion, this just made me crack up laughing (it’s a short, funny video)

Hah the last bit Gravity Grin

GravityFalls · 23/02/2021 10:14

Everyone knows you wait until they’re turned their backs before you do that...

CallmeAngelina · 23/02/2021 10:16

I think we should form a rota at our staffroom door here and operate it in the same way. Happy to go first...

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2021 10:19

You might find this handy, Ange 🖕

GravityFalls · 23/02/2021 10:21

We have a subject office between two classrooms so with two doors, both with glass panels in...we get so many students looking through the windows to see if we're in there, wanting stuff from us. They don't do it to piss us off but it's still annoying. I spend a lot of break time yelling "NO, GO AWAY" through the door. Then if you open the door they want to come in, and they wander around and touch stuff! I like the less formal relationships in college but sometimes it does my head in. DON'T TOUCH MY STUFF DICKHEADS

TheHoneyBadger · 23/02/2021 10:26

Non paid day today. Tesco delivery received and put away and that's all the obligatory stuff done other than chivvying ds through remote learning.

I could mark those year 9 essays I still haven't done or I could prepare notes for parents evening now I know who I'm seeing or I could clean the house.

In reality I'll unload and reload the dishwasher whilst waiting for the kettle to boil for another cup of coffee and possibly go as far as putting the washing machine on and then end up fannying around on my phone for ages and wonder where the time has gone.

Hope everyone is ok and files can be recovered (that has inspired me to see if I'm allowed to plug an external hard drive into my work laptop-suspect security settings won't let me). May the force be with those of you spending the day in teams, google meets or school

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 23/02/2021 10:39

We have children pancaking themselves against our glass staff room door. Bless.

SansaSnark · 23/02/2021 11:21

Rumour in our school is that on the 8th, students will only come in to be tested, and then go home again regardless.

Not sure how that will work with parents having to drop them off etc.

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2021 11:34

Yeah I can't see how we can have them come into school at a certain time for a test, wait for the results, then head into lessons. It'd be babysitting. Even worse than jabs, because at least the kids are in your lesson then leave, these won't be allowed in your lesson till they're tested.

JanFebAnyMonth · 23/02/2021 11:44

That is a useful thread Noble.

Yeah, presumably the only reason they've gone from two tests to three tests (Jan to Mar version) is because of medical advice.

In a way the bigger issue in the medium term is how many will dontests at hone/how competently / honestly.

Schools are going to be doing an awful lots of cheerleading positive media messages.

Maybe the most "hunky" member of staff could dress up in uniform and do an instructional video for the parents?

Or Chris H??

MrsHamlet · 23/02/2021 11:50

What do you do if the one who thinks he's the most hunky is actually not?

JanFebAnyMonth · 23/02/2021 11:51

Very interesting discusssion on the nursery data on the Data thread this morning - ONS report published yesterday shows high figures.

And piggy, that change in definition of outbreak seems very weasly, doesn't it?

JanFebAnyMonth · 23/02/2021 11:51

I was imagining a staff poll mrsH!
