You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

We've got some theatre tickets for the something of June - we arranged this week that they would be socially distanced, they've put 2 performances in instead of 1 and so on.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/02/2021 20:32

I think you're all very brave watching it, I can't do that.

Viciouslybashed · 22/02/2021 20:34

I can't watch. I also must NEVER stray into the coronavirus topic again and comment/read what people are saying. Awful people on this forum.

borntobequiet · 22/02/2021 20:34

@MrsHamlet

I teach Bob. Bob takes no shit from anyone. Bob says it as he sees it. Bob will fail all his GCSEs but he's a loveable rogue.
I know a RL Bob who joined the Army, did qualifications and training, got invalided out and is now training as a (very good) learning and skills teacher. He’s an absolute star, and still takes no shit. Learners love him.
piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 20:35

Your name becomes you VB!

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 20:36

I feel your pain harriet. My freezer is fucked.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/02/2021 20:38

I also must NEVER stray into the coronavirus topic again

I'm not going to either. Almost posted under a name change earlier saying 'if you want to keep schools consistently open, you need to stay as you were when your kids were home - that means staying home'.. but there is no point.

WarriorN · 22/02/2021 20:39

Hello all, sorry I've completely fallen off the threads. Stretched farther than a game of elastic hopsoctch.

Just reading a few bits as I totally missed all the announcements (party as toddler had weird and crazy meltdown all way back from nursery, including insisting on going back to nursery Confused)

What's the ons data that's come out today?

I'm increasingly frustrated at how vaccines are being handed out. An acquaintance who is a bf peer supporter but has taken a break for a while got hers recently. She's a sahm and in her early 30s, and not doing any peer support. I'm glad bf is being taken seriously at the same time... grr.

A young colleague who gives occasional day respite for one of our pupils received his way before another colleague with underlying conditions, or any of the over age 60 staff teaching same said pupil and peers. We have many pupils who are effectively sld but being an MLD school we don't qualify.

The asthma thing seems to be a lottery. I now know of a few with v low level asthma and young who've received it in a local authority. But not mine.

Grr.

Anyway, I hope all are well. Been thinking of Monkey especially with all that Jo Whiley and her sister have been dealing with.

GravityFalls · 22/02/2021 20:43

My DP’s brother, in his early 40s, has been vaccinated (ages ago, too) because he has asthma and works for the NHS. In HR. From home.

twinkletoesimnot · 22/02/2021 20:43

Just don't know what to say about it. Complete shit show!

We have to do out LFT on Monday and Thursday mornings (but I do mine on Sunday and Wednesday nightsWink)

JanFebAnyMonth · 22/02/2021 20:44

Nice to see you @WarriorN, I was meaning to put a "has anyone seen Warrior?" post up, I even checked the NE thread but couldn't see you!

JanFebAnyMonth · 22/02/2021 20:46

So the latest challenge for secondary heads is "How are we meant to test 1,500 students 3 times, safely, within a week?" The Krypton Factor had nothing on this, did it?

WarriorN · 22/02/2021 20:48

Re LFT we've been doing it for a few weeks and I tend to do it Sunday eve and weds eve.

It's hard to get it all right at first but now I feel it's second nature.

When they set up the option to make an account to save info it got a lot easier.

Not eating for 30 mins in the eve appears to be a challenge for me BlushI've also lost my test a couple of times before reporting online while trying to do bedtime. You can report it I think up to
24 hours later? (I seem to need that!)

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 20:48

I linked the data above warrior.

Someone on another thread who doesn't understand confidence intervals has just listed all the other professions that should be ahead of us for vaccinations by listing every single type of emergency professional. if you disaggregate secondary teachers , they are above others on the list and TAs would be far higher.

ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown · 22/02/2021 20:49

What does the ONS mean with the "adjusting for ability to social distance" etc stuff? Anyone who doesn't feel faint at the thought of a statistic able to tell me?

HarrietDVane · 22/02/2021 20:50

I am glad and grateful for the speedy rollout of vaccinations but there do seem to be some anomalies in the system. A friend who is a solicitor, working fully from home throughout, no underlying health issues, no caring responsibilities, in her early 40s has been invited to go for hers. No idea why. She lives in a different area to me so maybe they are just being more efficient with rollout or have a different demographic. I'm happy for her but at the same time I do feel a bit...Hmm

phlebasconsidered · 22/02/2021 20:50

My boring and annoying as fuck cousin just posted on her fb about getting her vaccine. She's worked at home for a charity for a year.

I now have 5 relatives who are all younger, fitter and not working face to face who have had their vaccines because of spurious necessity of occupation. Whereas I have not and mum is just having hers on Thursday.

To say I am seething and want to stab hot needles into Boris' eyes doesn't fully illustrate the depths of my hatred.

Appuskidu · 22/02/2021 20:50

@JanFebAnyMonth

I don’t get this-I thought I’d read that children needed to only have one negative LF test before they could start school, so why the other two AT school? Considering how shite the tests seem to be anyway, it doesn’t seem worth it if they’ll be doing the rest at home anyway!
RandomGrammarPun · 22/02/2021 20:51

It's going to be three times over two weeks or more, isn't it? Because each test must be 3-5 days apart. But they can start back after the first (negative) test. So, depending on the size of the school, very little teaching potentially in the first couple of weeks.

More fun for SLT to coordinate.

WarriorN · 22/02/2021 20:52

Ah thanks Jan.

I have no idea how heads will manage the testing in secondary. I do agree it's helpful to be talked through it though.

Is that ons thing really saying Ed staff were more likely than hcps to catch Covid?!

There's fewer deaths as there's more staff who are female and also under 30 I imagine. But, ignores TA rates woefully, who are often older. And long Covid is definitely going to impact many teaching staff.

twinkletoesimnot · 22/02/2021 20:52

But for now at least positive cases still isolate and close contacts too?

WarriorN · 22/02/2021 20:53

Yea I saw that piggy, thanks. Is it as straight forward as that first list? And the confidence is narrow. I don't fully understand the second table.

HarrietDVane · 22/02/2021 20:54

@piggywaspushed We've obviously angered the god of domestic appliances somehow. Or perhaps it just wants to jump on the teacher-bashing bandwagon. I am giving all the white goods a steely teacher glare in case they get any similar ideas.

WarriorN · 22/02/2021 20:55

@twinkletoesimnot

But for now at least positive cases still isolate and close contacts too?

I think so, we were originally told you had to do a pcr to confirm bit I think that guidance has changed?
