You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

It was recorded outside, at a distance, but so were other segments and they were ok. Guy sounded like a Dalek, Yr3 got the giggles, point about Community lost 🤷‍♀️.
Plus, I don’t really want to see some man recording in his kitchen. We can record in our kitchens. Music for Primary pretty poor, very repetitive and not at all inspiring.

Anyway. That’s probably by the by and done to death etc etc.

WhenSheWasBad · 14/02/2021 19:37

As an NQT I’ve found the science lessons in Oak really useful. I’ve also found EduTwitter handy but the self promotion and bun fights are so annoying.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/02/2021 19:44

I've not looked much at the music beyond reception, which I thought was OK. I do have an irrational annoyance about unnecessarily sanitising stuff though.

If horrible histories has taught us anything it's that most children are quite capable of dealing with it. And if 'here comes a chopper to chop off your head' was going to be an issue, they could probably have used a whole different song.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/02/2021 19:48

I love the resources and edu chat on edutwitter. I hate the spats and the fan clubs. Those amazon wish list people blow my mind.

Oak is OK for maths. Some bonkers methods but mostly sound. My other subject isn't on there. I've used some reception phonics with my own kid and it's been fine from my pov but I'm not an EYFS expert at all.

ChloeDecker · 14/02/2021 19:50

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay

That makes no sense. I could understand the audio on the stuff put up in August being rubbish. It was done in a rush. But they've had ages to do the new stuff. And they've managed without it long enough to keep going without until they get it right.
The stuff in my subject was all done for the whole academic year 20-21, last August. Am assuming it was the same for lots of other subjects too! Grin

I forgot to post this this morning btw :

In The Sunday Times.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/02/2021 20:00

All of the original subjects on there I think Chloe. They were trying to deal with the complaints that stuff wasn't going up quick enough first time round and deal with the fact that stuff doesn't get taught in the same order in every school.

I didn't think they'd put phonics on there this time, Herc. Or at least they said they weren't going to.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/02/2021 20:02

Rafals is it not phonics? Its like reading stuff, I'm definitely not an expert hahh!!

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/02/2021 20:05

Rafals it's not phonics sorry, it's literacy.

sherrystrull · 14/02/2021 20:06

There's not phonics that I've seen. We use the letters and sounds videos from the Dfe on YouTube.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/02/2021 20:06

I like the body percussion stuff for music- the kids liked the young guy doing it too. In his kitchen. That was the only thing we used apart from spelling. We're going to use their French next term, but that's pretty new - I looked early Jan and there was only Spanish.

Edutwitter full of eejits. I like Michael Tidd, he's a voice of reason. I hate the sharing of work - yeah, show me the other 11 exactly the same pieces of art. But it's better than FB, which is awful.

MrsHamlet · 14/02/2021 20:11

Those amazon wish list people blow my mind.
What is this???? Should I look or will I be scared?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/02/2021 20:14

Are the Amazon wish list people the people who offer something for others to use in return for buying books for their school rather than payment?

MrsHamlet · 14/02/2021 20:15

My Amazon wish list has expensive not from Amazon shoes on it. If I offer my chairs wisdom, will someone buy them for me?

TheHoneyBadger · 14/02/2021 20:16

They got paid £100 to read a script?

They didn't even produce the lesson and resources?

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/02/2021 20:16

I'm not so fussed about the "download my resource and buy my school a book". It's the ones that share their wishlists and send each other gifts from them.... Why?

MrsHamlet · 14/02/2021 20:19

herc are you saying you don't want to buy me the beautiful shoes??
honey aeons ago, Letts paid me a goodly chunk of money to record some revision stuff for them. I didn't write that, but they paid me to go to London and stay in a hotel and read a not very gripping set of revision notes for something I can't now recall. It was very very easy money.

RandomGrammarPun · 14/02/2021 20:20

I've pretty much kept off mn all day and stated away from the news but...

Despite Raab and others being clear that they are still talking about "from 8th March" the BBC is now reporting "all children back in school ON 8th March"???

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/02/2021 20:20

@TheHoneyBadger

If that's true, I feel like we've all missed a trick. It could be more lucrative than being friends with Matt Hancock.

It does answer a question I had from earlier in the week about the maths. They are using Maths Mastery in primary and KS3 and WRM in KS4. I was wondering how they had manged to find so many MM teachers. It makes complete sense that they didn't.

Ikr. When OA first appeared I thought it was examples of good practice from accomplished teachers. Then I watched some. Maybe my school are sort of Super or something, but, familiarity aside, the recorded lessons our teachers are doing are more than equal to anything OA are churning out.
noblegiraffe · 14/02/2021 20:43

My Amazon wishlist if anyone is interested is a badge saying ‘High Priestess of Misinformation’, an Enemies of Education t-shirt and a pre-order of piggy’s book series.

I will be buying MrsHamlet this from hers.

MrsHamlet · 14/02/2021 20:46

Thanks, noble. That is almost all my dreams come true...

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/02/2021 20:48

I can't believe you're buying a teacher a chair noble. MrsH make sure you don't post any photos of said chair on social media.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/02/2021 20:49

Yep. And at my school we were doing it before Oak had started - before the Easter holidays. I was put out when I first saw them, because I felt mine were better. Ha. A good resource if you pick and choose.

I'm not sure what we'll be doing when we're back, because it's still going to be isolating and choosing to stay home, isn't it. Can't have full class in and be providing for 2 kids at home.

Yep!

Please please please don’t ask me how I know! Grin
