I think in general there are few open websites that people can join for free and express, post videos and link whatever they want, with little moderation, as the old TES Community was like, before it was shut down. It was not only being used to discuss political matters but also to recruit members to an alternative world view, and I am sure, this new website would not interest those with that agenda.
I was on the TES website today, and lesson plans I have downloaded and commented on, still have my TES username and avatar and if you click on it, it goes directly to my account. I clicked on other users, and the same happens. What this means is that TES still has our personal data and can communicate to us via our emails, if they wish and thereby could even allow us to communicate with others, if they wished.
They may really have had the desire to create another teaching website, but some of the angry emails they received from irate Tessers about how cruel, unjust, evil they were, may have prompted them to come up with that message to stave off the vitriol.
It is still part of the company who took over the TES's remit, to be a place where teachers from around the world can discuss and debate educational issues. They must still have around 10-50,000 TES user accounts and it is a less than a month since the website was closed down.
