You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

In the other staffroom, there is rhubarb & ginger gin, along with tea and coffee.

And another thing I'm worrying about - I'm secondary - I'm really hoping we can send back home any student who "Corona coughs" on anyone without 3 warning and a referral, and also anyone else who cannot follow the Corona health and safety rules.
All those parents with impulsive teens who cannot follow rules desperate to get them back to school - I really hope we end up sending them back home for the duration!

Appuskidu · 16/05/2020 09:43

@SallyLovesCheese

Sorry, I am going,... but the comment on your audiologists thread (They are all busily working away, often in brand new roles. Hats off to them imo) was brilliant.

Just like teachers really, only I don’t ever recall anyone saying that about us!

Cantaloupeisland · 16/05/2020 09:44

Fell exactly the same Appu think an internet free weekend is needed Flowers

TheHoneyBadger · 16/05/2020 09:50

Just saying hello before everyone flees for their mental health. “2 wrongs do make a right”. There’s no logic or reasoning

MollyAtTheFolly · 16/05/2020 09:53

I thought whoever made the McDonalds comparison was spot on as well.

Isn't it interesting to find out what the 'spirit of Mumsnet' is.

Mumsnet will no longer be getting my free advice to posters who ask (as far as I can tell, genuine) questions about their child's education.

RigaBalsam · 16/05/2020 09:53

Sally what was your comment I can't find it?

Mistressiggi · 16/05/2020 09:56

I've reported to HQ to make them aware of how many of us are voting with our feet, since there is an absence of "peace and love" moderation when it comes to teachers.
Like those gambling ads say, "when the fun stops, stop".
Have good weekends, all

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 16/05/2020 10:04

Hello everyone - and thanks for the many reports (which we're going through now). We've removed The Staffroom from active conversations, as requested. It can take a short while to kick in but please let us know if you see any threads popping up in the active list.

greathat · 16/05/2020 10:05

I do wonder how many false negatives they'll be by people not swabbing themselves properly. It has to go right to the back of the throat i think? It feels like without having an idea of that it renders it pointless. Keep hearing articles where people test negative then positive later, but teachers and kids seem to be expected back as soon as they test negative

NeurotrashWarrior · 16/05/2020 10:12

Thanks @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

I reported the protected species comments.

MossWalk · 16/05/2020 10:13

I’m really hoping we can send back home any student who "Corona coughs" on anyone without 3 warning and a referral, and also anyone else who cannot follow the Corona health and safety rules.

Thisis so important.

SallyLovesCheese · 16/05/2020 10:14

Wow, thanks, @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet , for removing us from Active; that is a good step forward.

I may well step away for the weekend too. I was up till stupid o'clock this morning, partly with a teething baby but partly because of MN! So not coming on here for a bit will do my actual health some good, never mind my mental health.

SallyLovesCheese · 16/05/2020 10:16

Riga, this was my comment:

"The Audiology team at my local hospital are not currently doing audiograms. I had an appointment in April but it was cancelled.

Am I wondering what all the audiologists are doing? Yes!

Do I think they're being paid for doing nothing? No!

Have I started a thread ot even posted on MN complaining that they're obviously not doing their jobs at the moment? No!

Are you complaining about all the NHS staff who've been redeployed during this crisis? Or just think that teachers are the only profession currently doing something a bit different from their normal role at this time?

Can't be mad about teachers if you're not mad about the others, can you?"

In the middle of the night it felt so powerful, but reading back now, not quite so much!

NeurotrashWarrior · 16/05/2020 10:16

Very good point Why, though hands are usually less affected by sunburn as they're not constantly statically facing the sun like forearms and shoulders and necks, noses etc, especially in kids who are running around. I rarely put sunceeen on my kids legs if they're running about which is usually always, especially in the north if the U.K. Boys tend to wear longer baggy shorts though.

NeurotrashWarrior · 16/05/2020 10:19

Brilliant post sally.

I know several members of staff who offered to go to other schools, especially TAs who with a week or two off the rota felt they needed to do something. Loads of staff volunteered to go to other schools over the Easter hols too a we had so few KW and kids who said they'd be in.

Saucery · 16/05/2020 10:21

Sally yes, I agree with your points about redeployment being difficult or unworkable in many cases, plus teachers are in fact working as much as, if not more than, usual.
I think I’m trying to counteract the moans about school staff in general not working their hours, because so much support work needs to be done in school. If I worked in any other dept I would have been redeployed safely. As it is I’m technically receiving Danger Money for going into an unsafe environment.

RigaBalsam · 16/05/2020 10:24

Sally it is a good post and as said can be said about several jobs.

greathat · 16/05/2020 10:28

(Not really) Aibu to think pubs and the hospitality industry should reopen now? The bloke that runs Wetherspoons said there's no transmission in pubs and we don't need to see any evidence.

Loads of people work in that industry. A lot of jobs in the evenings when kids aren't in school anyway. Partition larger pubs into smaller room (with no notice or funds) put in some narrow corridors. Find out who wants to go and give them an arrival time. Then tell them every time they come they'll be in the same section with the same waitress and same people. Carefully limited to 15 customers per section. If one person develops symptoms they just shut down that area of the pub for that shift.

We could split pub going into 2 hour shifts with 15 mins in between while the waitress cleans (she won't need a break as she'll have had some time away from the customers cleaning the loo every time someone goes. The economy needs pubs open so let's get on with it. Don't know why anyone would have an issue and if they do, just fire them.

Have just been thinking, how can safe supervision ratios be maintained even with 2 adults to a (half) class if one of the adults is either:

• giving a child 121 because of SEN
• disruptive or harmful behaviour, either sporadic of ongoing
• they wet themselves because they're not allowed to go to the toilet without supervision of hand washing
• adult needs the loo or some other kind of break
• a safeguarding issue arising from 3 months at home is disclosed
• it's time to clean again

...... and then another of these issues arises at the same time?

Surely sometimes - often? - another adult is going to have to intervene?? Pop goes the bubble!

OK there may be ways most of these issues can be planned for. I pity Heads at the moment, I really do.

Piggywaspushed · 16/05/2020 10:41

Thank you MNHQ!

MossWalk · 16/05/2020 10:45

Our SEN children are going to massively struggle. We have all kinds of needs and all kinds of presentations. Some may do slightly better with a desk and chair and smaller group approach.

Others will hugely kick off. We rely on sensory diets and soft furnishings. One in particular loves a costume but it’s all on her terms, so we couldn’t even have one costume on a peg for her.

I genuinely don’t know what the answer is. I feel so guilty about leaving it to a TA, who is underpaid at the best of times. At least I’m making a decent wage to deal with it.

Piggywaspushed · 16/05/2020 10:55

I am very much enjoying the whole of Twitter launching on Adonis every time he writes a Tweet.

His new tactic is one word tweets.

MrsHerculePoirot · 16/05/2020 10:57

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet
Thank you.currently all staff room threads still showing in active. Do you know how long roughly it takes?

FrippEnos · 16/05/2020 11:08

You may want to check out the MN comment on

This thread before we get to gushy over MN.

Apparently its not "teacher bashing" its "discussing fears"
