You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

In the other staffroom, there is rhubarb & ginger gin, along with tea and coffee.

Many of them have been redeployed into other council depts where presumably there are gaps due to staff shielding. I’d be more than happy with that tbh, but schools are quite insular as a service and I don’t know of any LEAs who are doing that. Must clarify, speaking as support staff. Teacher terms and conditions probably rule that out.

RigaBalsam · 16/05/2020 08:13

It's so true my dd hasn't had a brave appointment since February. I haven't worked myself into a frenzy with gnashing teeth.Grin.

Anne Longfield spectacularly missing the point. Yes that's it Anne its the squabbling thats the problem. Way to infantile us.

ChloeDecker · 16/05/2020 08:16

My brother in law is an optometrist in hospitals and they haven’t been re-deployed anywhere yet and have been wfh on full pay (plus getting the other NHS benefits currently) and says it is common in many departments with some very very quiet at the moment and he has still sent my niece and nephew in to school as keyworker children. But no, it’s teachers who get the abuse, eh!? Hey ho!

RigaBalsam · 16/05/2020 08:21

Brave hahah I meant orthodontics

SallyLovesCheese · 16/05/2020 08:21

Saucery, councils have some of their own staff to redeploy to cover absences. I'm an SEN teacher for the council, currently also doing part of an SEN Officer role. Speech and Language therapists have been redeployed. Librarians. Centre staff. Etc. It's made easier by the fact that I have a work laptop and phone and email address so can access training, communications and files. Teachers from schools may not have adequate technology at home, they cannot access council servers and they're still working.

NeurotrashWarrior · 16/05/2020 08:22

Morning all, I'm thinking of having a mn break; partly as I'm wondering if it's why my brain is so foggy headed. Partly as I'm wasting too much time and my house a a tip. So much so Dh is writing a parody song. I tried working on docs yesterday and output was ridiculously slow.

Had some blood tests yesterday though and took an extra bit of thyroxine in the hope it gives some rocket fuel.

It'll last 15 mins Grin

Oh Riga :(

Where are all these threads; I'm only finding threads where everyone is saying odfo or its too soon!

WhyNotMe40 · 16/05/2020 08:24

Just going on the thread titles there are 13 "open the schools" threads on the first page of the coronavirus board.
Ridiculous.

Appuskidu · 16/05/2020 08:24

I can’t believe ‘stop squabbling’ is this morning’s headline-not ‘Doctors agree that it’s too soon to reopen schools’

I actually feel sick reading that.

Squabbling? Really?

Piggywaspushed · 16/05/2020 08:32

It is on The Guardian front page, thnakfully

The 'stop squabbling woman' has been trying to get us back since lockdown. She never comments on social care working at half capacity.

The antibody tests would give so many teachers confidence to step inside classrooms. They need to roll enough of those out to get to any NHS staff, careworkers, social care and teachers imo.

I was really ill just before lockdown : if I know I had CV I wouldn't reel like I would get infected and/or infect others and put lots of childrens and their families and my colleagues and myself at risk.

Mistressiggi · 16/05/2020 08:49

I've logged on for my usual breakfast mumsnet and (other than this thread) am thinking what's the bloody point? There's no fun, nothing interesting, no reason to be here other than self-flagellation. Think I will log out for the day and see how I feel.
Have a good Saturday everyone! Daffodil

WhyNotMe40 · 16/05/2020 08:58

I had a teenager cough right in my face on the Monday the week before lockdown. By the Saturday I was poorly and by the Wednesday after I had a whole day dizzy and struggling to breathe.
I'd quite like to know if it was coronavirus as well, and if it was I'm pretty sure I caught it from that student.

RigaBalsam · 16/05/2020 09:04

Good article Piggy.

Just taken my car into the garage. Queues outside. Hand gel. Wipe your keys in it.

Perspex screen. Shoot to put keys.

But then they have a can do attitude and I don't. So 🤷🏼‍♀️

sakura06 · 16/05/2020 09:11

Sorry that I'm responding to something miles up thread, but maybe we could have clear visors as protection? Would be better for communication and offer some protection?

On another note, all the teacher-bashing threads are starting to give me the rage and anxiety at the same time...

StSaulOfSnacks · 16/05/2020 09:13

Another good Guardian article. Maybe I'll just post this on the TB threads, alongside my daffodil. It's not just about safety, it's about the negative experience the children will have.

ChloeDecker · 16/05/2020 09:18

Morning all! I too think I am going to spend the rest of the weekend off Mumsnet after this post because I’m just not sure I can debate on those other threads, the logic of some parents demanding to make a decision where they don’t know the full facts and want to stick their fingers in their ears rather than listen, just so they don’t feel guilty for sending their child into a very different environment than before.
That and the hypocrisy with other professions/situations being displayed is more rife on MN recently.

I really hope you all have the opportunity to have some rest and relaxation after working hard all week and I will be back Monday morning to put the kettle on for everyone.

Daffodil Peace and love to all Grin

NeurotrashWarrior · 16/05/2020 09:18

Good guardian articles at the mo.

Kids in school through this have been outdoors an awful lot and playing separately; though we've not been SD in our Sen school especially with the younger ones. Y2 and 3children with us can be operating at 20 months. Which I personally agree with on that lower, personal issue; all staff have been happy to do so.

Piggywaspushed · 16/05/2020 09:19

I do think masks are an issue . I was in my local shop this morning and couldn't hear anything the girl behind the till said.

That said, they are managing in other countries' schools.

Piggywaspushed · 16/05/2020 09:21

It's such a big issue for the keyworkers (especially teachers?) that the guidelines basically suggest wrap around care goes.

Appuskidu · 16/05/2020 09:23

Morning all! I too think I am going to spend the rest of the weekend off Mumsnet after this post

Me too-it’s making me feel really anxious and stressed. I am so angry about that ‘squabbling’ comment-how fucking dare she?

Lots of graphs (on Twitter) seem to showing that things are still really shit but the experts Say that they ‘don’t need to rely on the R number any more’ which makes me think we are just going to be lobbed back in, no matter what the science is. The government can interpret it to show whatever they want it to say anyway, and anyone who dares to argue is either ignored completely in the press or is reported as being a lazy, workshy Marxist who just needs to step up.

I feel gutted today-feel really down.

NeurotrashWarrior · 16/05/2020 09:25

Visors would be a great idea, all the secondary school dt depts are making visors with the key worker kids who are in.

WhyNotMe40 · 16/05/2020 09:38

Neurotrash - how does all the handwashing and outside play work with suncream though? My youngest daughter finds it difficult to put suncream on herself and would burn in spite of suncream if outside all day - and the handwashing justs washes the suncream off their hands.
Our school playground and field has zero shade - and sports day has always been an issue with sunburn despite sun cream.. in fact I nearly withdrew her last year, but instead stood there like a twat with her team with a sun umbrella Grin
