Could we ask MN for no more teacher bashing threads do you think?

It's hard enough without being told we're "twiddling thumbs"
I'm really, honestly trying so hard right now. And I'm sure thousands more are as well.
I don't want to make excuses or feel sad for myself or start championing us, but can we just have a break please?
MN is full of arguments against us, angry justifications of opinions from both sides.
I understand why people are frustrated, but could we ask MN for people to take a break, please Sad

@Glitterbug76 I mentioned that children were coming up to me because they don't understand social distancing. Where did I say anything negative about the children? And what do you mean 'if you really think that of a child?' Please tell me what I said about any children?

sweetkitty · 11/04/2020 23:46

I’m a SEN teacher I’m on the rots you look after keyworkers children although we only have one child who falls into that category. I’m torn as I want the children I teach to be at home safe but I also worry about their parents as school can be respite for them, the only break they get. Children out their routine of school is hard, their are quite a few of my children I would want in school right now. But I didn’t make the rules.

I’m planning, making new resources, doing online courses as well as trying to homeschool my own DC.

One of my friends really upset me recently when she questioned my choice of career basically saying I didn’t care for my children. I get hit most days, I’m covered in bruises, had hair ripped from my head, been spat at, kicked, punched and bitten yet I turn up everyday as I love my job.

sweetkitty · 11/04/2020 23:47

@crazycatgal that’s exactly the thing I was talking about people taking things the wrong way

echt · 11/04/2020 23:48

I think teachers are not above criticism but some of them seem to think they are and this is a repeated theme I see both on MN and in RL

How do you know what they think? It's what they say and do that counts.

Teachers have a lot of power in people's children's lives

They really really don't. Do you think if teachers really had power there'd be discipline issues/not doing HW issues?

It seems that any questioning at all is "teacher bashing" and is met with often hostile and obstructive responses which just perpetuate the cycle of "them and us". I expect this will be robustly denied

There you see, you've done it. You've generalised by saying "any questioning at all" and yes this is not true. How could it be? There is a range of opinion on MN. This is what is so infuriating about threads having a go at teachers, the generalising. Well done. Hmm

What I do so heartily wish is that non-teachers would stay out of the Staffroom.

crazycatgal · 11/04/2020 23:49

@sweetkitty It's actually really pissed me off that someone has somehow (not really sure how) decided that I'm slagging off kids and that I don't care about them, when i've said absolutely nothing of the sort.

I cried when all this happened and we had to shut.

PhysicsCat · 11/04/2020 23:50

I teach secondary and have been told by my school I can’t be on the rota for key workers due to vulnerable status. So far I’ve set work as booklets for all students I teach who are known to have no internet or pc access at home. Delivered on line (not in person) lessons for all of my classes according to the normal timetable with sufficient detail that they can keep learning. Monitored who has accessed the work, marked and given feedback to all students at least once, most classes twice. Phoned all my tutor group’s families to check how they were getting on and helped resolve some IT issues. Setting work takes a lot longer than usual as more needs to be written for explanations that would be given verbally. This week as it is the holidays I’ve not set new work or marked work but have re-jigged the GCSE and A level schemes of work for either a return in Sept or a return in June to ensure required practicals are done and all content is covered particularly for years 10 and 12.

pirateparker · 11/04/2020 23:53

Know 7 teachers, all absolutely loving the time off, as all are on rotas for their schools. All on full pay. All refuse ‘live’ lessons as say would be impossible to ‘control’ the kids.
Ones taken up surfing, another running, another one has written a kids book!
Got to admit, it’s hard not to be jealous right now especially if you’re still working (and trying to WFH with kids) and on much reduced pay.

Glitterbug76 · 11/04/2020 23:54

I think it was the bit about social distancing, Just think some should spare a thought for the children here. My daughter does know how to social distance her best friend's nan was dying of cancer in the play ground last week she couldn’t hug her. Her hands bleed from washing them that much. They see there parents tired stripping there clothes off at the door. They are forced into school even when it’s Easter because their can’t look after them.

Mistressiggi · 11/04/2020 23:57

I am WFM with my own kids as well. Should I be jealous of myself? Confused
If your pay is reduced (you mean you're furloughed?) you should not be working.
Glad to see we're back to the "video lessons or you're skiving" false dilemma.
Must say the taking up surfing is a new one though.

Mistressiggi · 11/04/2020 23:58

Glitter, you know the people on here spare more than a thought for the children. Sad You can't work with kids day in day out, year after year without really caring for them.

AStarSoBright · 11/04/2020 23:59

I dislike threads where all teachers are assumed to be equal.

I have an issue with my son's school sending out an email saying they expect all work to be printed, completed and saved in a folder to be taken into school when it reopens. We are not to ask or expect teachers to mark or give feedback on work completed whilst school is closed as they 'may be parents too who are having to emergency educate their own children'

This has annoyed many parents, firstly it assumes we all have a printer, ink and paper. Secondly, many of the parents are wfh whilst trying to keep on top of school work, in my case my son is in year 10 and I'm horribly aware that there is very little time between now and GCSE's.

I don't have any issues with teachers, I have an issue with this particular school.

sweetkitty · 11/04/2020 23:59

@crazycatgal I also got accused of not caring as I was talking about handwashing and the new rules we were given, my children lick and spit on their hands a lot so it’s difficult to keep washing their hands and I felt really anxious about keeping them safe because if one child had CV we would all have it. There’s no way we could practise social distancing either my children crave physical contact. I got accused of not caring and it’s not the children’s fault they lick everything and if I felt like that I should reconsider my choice of profession. I cried too.

crazycatgal · 12/04/2020 00:01

@Mistressiggi Thank you. Thanks

crazycatgal · 12/04/2020 00:04

@sweetkitty I wish people would have a think about what they're saying. We're trying to do our best to keep the children and ourselves as safe as possible. Pointing out that social distancing and adequate hand washing is not always happening in schools doesn't mean that we don't care.

I'm sure that you're doing all that you can for your children.

sweetkitty · 12/04/2020 00:07

@crazycatgal thank you Flowers I’m worrying about my children and their families everyday.

Surfing !! When my daughter is in tears on Tuesday because I’ve got to take her in school because my leave has been cancelled and I’m doing a twelve hour shift. This needs reporting people are risking there lives !

Babbas · 12/04/2020 00:12

Teachers like anyone else cannot be above criticism or reproach. I have 5 teachers in my friends/ family group. Out of the 5, 2 are on a Rota requiring them to be available one day every 4 weeks. No live lessons (they've refused) and setting work takes them one hour or less a day as it's one email sent to the whole class. They are all enjoying their time off and are busy on social media cooking, running, doing tik tok videos etc. They are delighted to be on full pay right through to September and have shot down any suggestions of returning in August for a couple of weeks to make up lost time. Those who teach gcse and a level are delighted that their most stressful 2 terms leaving up to exams are no more. These are not criticisms, these are truths they have shared with me. And yes, maybe this is why some people do not all the sympathy for teachers. However, would they have preferred to carry on and finish their terms, say goodbye to their classes, do all the exam prep... Yes.

YgritteSnow · 12/04/2020 00:19

@echt

You too have done everything I detailed in my post in that one post of yours. Responded defensively when I was not in any way attacking and tried to shut me down, and everyone else who isn't a teacher by telling me I should stay out of The Staffroom. You have confirmed everything I already thought.

Glitterbug76 · 12/04/2020 00:28

Babbas
I was told earlier that everything I said was hearsay !
All I can say is that a crisis shows peoples true character an if like you say and pirate say and what I’ve observed is true then hopefully the nhs , shop workers , social workers ect will be the ones with the 13 weeks holidays !!
I definitely am proud I have stepped up and not refusing to work. I know what me and my colleagues have done and I am so proud of them. Leaving there children , isolating them selves from there loved ones.

pirateparker · 12/04/2020 00:36

@misstressiggi
Not furloughed but as I run my own business my income has taken a dive and am working as much as I can to keep my business going and pay my staff (who some I have furloughed but still need paying by me before I can claim it back from the gov).
I don’t understand why some teachers are doing live lessons and some aren’t? Why is there such disparity over teachers workloads?
You do seem a tad defensive. I do hope you’re ok!

echt · 12/04/2020 00:36

I rather thought I'd pointed the holes in your argument. Isn't that what debate is about? Or this version of trying to shut you down?

And yes, I really think non-teachers should stay out of the Staffroom. This was set up for teachers to talk to each other, not have goady posters piling in.

Start your own thread on AIBU. They've not had a thread critiquing teachers for ages.

I’m sorry I just had to come back to that point about the teachers you know refusing to do video link .. I have a co worker who Is a ward manager she is Skyping her children for the next 3 months because one of her children is in her high risk but she sees this as her duty to nurse vulnerable people !! Says it all really

We won’t stay out of it we are tax payers and parents.

pinkrocker · 12/04/2020 00:47

@Mistressiggi if this particular section of chat could be closed to teachers it would make sense, although I believe unworkable as it's an open forum.
I didn't start the thread to open an argument at all! I was rather hoping to hear from fellow teachers, and if MN would listen.
I've reported it to MN anyway.
Thank you for the positive comments. As I originally said, it's a difficult job right now, so you have my sincere appreciation!
