Could we ask MN for no more teacher bashing threads do you think?

It's hard enough without being told we're "twiddling thumbs"
I'm really, honestly trying so hard right now. And I'm sure thousands more are as well.
I don't want to make excuses or feel sad for myself or start championing us, but can we just have a break please?
MN is full of arguments against us, angry justifications of opinions from both sides.
I understand why people are frustrated, but could we ask MN for people to take a break, please Sad

Some teachers are themselves high risk, can you believe it Shock

OneOfTheGrundys · 12/04/2020 18:18

I find it disgusting how many are saying they would refuse to go back to school unless they deem it 'safe' for them
So my fear and reticence over returning to work is ‘disgusting’ because I’m a teacher and a carer for my husband who is shielding following a stem cell transplant? If he catches this he’ll die.
But, you know, I’ll just jog on in and shut up regardless of the certain consequence for my family if this virus enters the house.

ScorpionQueen · 12/04/2020 18:20

The irony of a thread in the staffroom hoping that teacher bashing would be addressed becoming the worst teacher bashing thread I've seen in a long time.
Sad

Hoggleludo · 12/04/2020 18:33

@Whichroomtovisit

You can just google work for your child's age

It doesn't necessarily have to come from THE school.

Glitterbug76 · 12/04/2020 18:38

Absolutely no one is in a shielded group should be subjected to being exposed. You should be expected to I hope your husbands treatment and recovery goes well

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/04/2020 20:03

In my department of 9 there are two in the shield group, two with family in the shield group and one pregnant. I assume it's pretty common although not to that extend. Given that social distancing needs to be adhered to classes can't be joined up - what would happen? My smallest class this year is 28 and largest 34 - I just don't know how this could be safely implemented!

MsTSwift · 12/04/2020 20:05

Try being a lawyer everyone hates you 😁 even Shakespeare and Dickens slag you off. Teachers get off pretty lightly in comparison!

Mistressiggi · 12/04/2020 20:09

Shakespeare and Dickens aren't on mumsnet though.

Appuskidu · 12/04/2020 20:11

Ha ha! Yes, very true re Dickens!

I have to say-I think this week on MN has been the worst for teacher hate than I have ever known Sad

I'm actually getting really annoyed by it. I live in a house with 6 other adults. Every other adult in my home has been furloughed on 80% pay and are waking up when they want, playing computer games all day and twiddling their thumbs. One of them was saying how they are financially better off now because they are getting a holiday on their loan repayments and don't need to pay rent for three months.

I am trying my best in a very shit situation to do the best I can for my kids. I am, like many other professionals, trying to balance working from home with childcare of a 2 year old. I don't expect any special treatment or a blue Peter badge at the end of all this, but I'm getting quite annoyed actually by the amount of threads on here that fail see that we are trying to do our best for their kids whilst simutainiously shoving our own kids in front of the TV for hours on end. It's a shit situation. No one wants to be in it. And I'm beyond pissed off at being told that other people are being laid off and I'm lucky to be in my job. I work insanely hard at my job because fuck knows how our teenagers are managing and I just want to bring them a tiny sense of normality to their lives and hope this doesn't screw them over in future exams. A little bit of recognition wouldn't got amiss.

MsTSwift · 12/04/2020 20:15

What’s the difference between a lawyer and a leech? A leech stops sucking your blood when you die. You’re welcome 😁

CheesecakeAddict · 12/04/2020 20:16

And to be quite frank, I'm utterly disgusted at the number of posts I'm seeing from parents wanting to endanger other people's lives, because they can't handle the behaviour of their own children.

Mistressiggi · 12/04/2020 21:14

Another one has just popped up on Aibu. Op itself not so objectionable, but now posters joining in saying you can't criticise a teacher on mumsnet, we are holy (or words to that affect).
I have asked HQ but they have not chosen to involve themselves.
Nice try MsSwift and lawyers may well experience more universal, and literary, hatred, but they don't get as many Aibu threads! Grin

OneOfTheGrundys · 12/04/2020 22:41

@Glitterbug76 thank you. I love my job and have been teaching for 17 years. I want to be back but I’m also terrified about the consequences.

SallyLovesCheese · 12/04/2020 23:01

Thanks for the "lolz", @MsTSwift ! Grin

I’m really quite interested in how the people in the countries where schools are 100% shut are managing - I.e medical staff’s children etc. How are they doing it??

About turning children of key workers away- that’s fascinating - not in a good way - I’m just wondering how and why.

My school are being strict for obvious reasons. They have asked for proof. Genuine Key Workers haven’t had an issue with this. Lots of medical families in our school. An IcT person linked to the hospital systems was allowed to still send children in, that’s fine too.

We have joint up with the neighbouring primary school to ease the burden on staff and exposure of staff. Vulnerable staff and staff families at each so we’ve joined and remaining staff are covering. Also allows the buildings to be deep cleaned. We are trying to stop the spread. The less adults exposed at once the better in the long run, hence the join up

Cheesecake addict
In what way ?

Glitterbug76 · 13/04/2020 11:10

Chloe
I have spoken to my cousin an the reason on the email is that they are only having children that are in that are residential care. The school where my cousin works are saying she’s still got to go into work.
Thank you Chloe and for all the teachers like you your pupils are extremely lucky to have such an amazingly dedicated person guiding them through there education and I should imagine missing you and vice versa.

ChloeDecker · 13/04/2020 11:19

Glitterbug is this a mainstream state school we are talking about because the bit about ‘residential care’ indicates this isn’t?
If it is a mainstream state school then I would reiterate my advice for your cousin to contact her local authority to access the provision that they must provide. A quick Google with relevant keywords will give her all she needs to do, to make contact. I’m hoping that this is sorted for your cousin and her son

Glitterbug76 · 13/04/2020 11:24

Thanks Chloe it’s not a mainstream state school.

ChloeDecker · 13/04/2020 11:35

Ok, that makes sense and to be fair, that bit of information is quite important and was a little off of you to initially use this as a reason in your initial list of things teachers weren’t doing, so they should be criticised for it.
For specific SEND schools and PRUs, the advice from the govt was slightly different (safety being their main reason) and the local authority should have been in contact with your cousin. This isn’t something teachers can be blamed for but it is interesting (not your fault) that attributing this to teachers was your first assumption.

It’s why it’s important to not always believe everything your read/hear second hand and even more important to not use it as a negative to a whole profession and then post it on a large forum. It’s also important for readers on Mumsnet to not always assume that just because someone writes something as fact, doesn’t necessarily make it so.

I am sorry that your cousin’s local authority have let her down and I hope she has some strength to get on their case to provide support.

Could not give less of a fuck what you think - my 7 month old son has got one lung and is exceptionally vulnerable. He would be at high risk of dying if he were to get COVID. I go in on my scheduled day, and take strict measures when I get home to ensure I don’t contaminate him. But I won’t be returning to school as normal whilst there is still the risk I could bring home a virus which would kill my baby 🤷🏻‍♀️

FrippEnos · 13/04/2020 18:52

Tunnocks34

We have quite a few teachers in your position, and are quite lucky that the HT wouldn't have them on site.

In point of fact for those bashing teachers he had to send those that he knew about home as they wanted to stay and keep things as normal as possible for the kids.

Glitterbug76 · 13/04/2020 23:19

You should not be expected to go into school you would not be expected to. You are in a shielded group, speak to your union. Your employers still have a duty under the health and safety at work act. Please don’t go In.

Useruseruserusee · 14/04/2020 13:09

@Tunnocks34

I am not on the rota as my two year old has had major surgery on his respiratory system and has experienced issues from this. He isn’t shielded but was advised to isolate by his consultant. My school have been understanding about this and I’m working from home. Please raise this again with your school. I am sure your colleagues would all understand if they knew your situation.
