Could we ask MN for no more teacher bashing threads do you think?

It's hard enough without being told we're "twiddling thumbs"
I'm really, honestly trying so hard right now. And I'm sure thousands more are as well.
I don't want to make excuses or feel sad for myself or start championing us, but can we just have a break please?
MN is full of arguments against us, angry justifications of opinions from both sides.
I understand why people are frustrated, but could we ask MN for people to take a break, please Sad

We are on a rota. The HOD sets work for the week. I have reports to write and will be in school after the hols to look after key workers' children. I have an online meeting to discuss how we will award grades. It is not a full school timetable, but I am doing what school leaders have instructed me to so. For safeguarding reasons we have been told not to do video teaching.

I have my own dc at home. I would love to go back to work.
What exactly do you want me to do?

Mistressiggi · 11/04/2020 22:51

Why are posters answering questions about their jobs on this thread? There are 17 others you could do this on.

OxanaVorontsova · 11/04/2020 22:53

Equally sick of this OP.

I'm not working at the moment, as it's the Easter holidays. In the 2 weeks before that, I was working as directed by my head teacher. I have no idea what other teachers are doing. I imagine some are doing more and some are doing less, but that is always the way it is.

GoingtotheWinchester · 11/04/2020 22:55

I’m baffled as to why teachers are being singled out for this vitriol? There are loads of people sat at home doing less than they would normally do.

I’m not doing the hours I would normally do but I’m supporting my class from home as much as I can and when I’m not needed I’m volunteering.

What do you want me to do? My school is closed. I’m baffled.

OxanaVorontsova · 11/04/2020 22:55

@Mistressiggi because people asked!

TheCrowFromBelow · 11/04/2020 22:56

Well at the moment they should be on holiday, and they are only paid for term time.
I live next to a school, it's tiny, the teachers are on rotation coming in since this started - including school holidays - to care for the children of key workers. There are only about 5 kids in but at least 2 staff every day. On top of this they will be trying to manage their classes remotely.
My DS's secondary school has been amazing keeping DCs on track with lessons whilst finding a balance between motivating them to start the school work
checking in with emails and help when needed.
I cannot imagine how hard it is for you trying to do your jobs remotely, at least mine involves actually sitting in front of a computer all day and ive found that hard enough without my team and my office facilities around me.
Also its weird these threads have popped up this week- it's the holidays, DCs wouldn't be set work anyway.
Thanks from me anyway Flowers

crazycatgal · 11/04/2020 22:57

It does annoy me when i'm trying to create work than can be done at home, going into school looking after vulnerable and key worker children, with children coming right up to me because they don't understand social distancing and I see people saying we're doing fuck all.

OneOfTheGrundys · 11/04/2020 23:01

I’m on extended carer’s leave but when I do go back, assuming we’re all still locked down, I’ll be on the key worker/vulnerable worker rota.
Then researching and rewriting our department curriculum for September so we can be our best for the confused, possibly traumatised children returning to school.

Glitterbug76 · 11/04/2020 23:01

I’m sorry I’m a key worker and so is Dh , my dd school was infuriated that I need a place. So this is this jist of why I am annoyed

  1. My cousins is a mid wife with twins her hubby has his own business the school said your husband will have to quit his business or you don’t go to work.
2 I know a neighbour whose a teacher she said it’s disgusting that I have to send my kids school to look after key workers children
  1. My cousin who has 3 children on of whom has special needs has been told that he can’t have his place even though she her self works In schools an now my cousins son is so out of routine his behaviour has forced her husband whose a key worker to have to leave his job.
3 a family member whose husband is a ex police officer whose retired on full pay refusing to go into work refusing to go into school even though her husband is at home full time she is absolutely furious she has to do emails during the day. !! I mean how dare they ask her to do what she gets paid for !! I’m am sorry if others have any positive stories but when I hear after doing a 12 hour shifts my holidays have been cancelled for the foreseeable future to hear that teachers are doing shifts to look after virtual children makes my blood boil !!
GuyFawkesDay · 11/04/2020 23:04

Situation 1 is correct.
Only one party is keyworker. Therefore the other partner stays home with the kids

ineedaholidaynow · 11/04/2020 23:04

Some of the SLT in our local schools have been dropping off food parcels for families who are on FSM including over the Easter holidays.

Teachers are also working out how to look out for the vulnerable children.

Some schools weren’t that prepared to get a full work programme in place before the Easter holidays but they will be coming up with a plan for next term.

Some teachers will also be on a rota to look after key worker children over the holidays, and in some schools that will include the Bank Holidays.

But you just have to read a number of threads on here where parents have said they are not going to make their children do the work the teachers have set. I would not be impressed if I had spent the whole of the Easter holidays planning work for the first few weeks of next term for parents to not even bother opening the school emails.

I am a school governor I am regularly in contact with my schools and am very grateful for all the hard work all the staff are doing.

I am also grateful for the teachers at DS’s school who are very engaged with all the pupils.

My work involves spreadsheets, I can do that in the office or at home. Not much difference really. Trying to teach not in the classroom and look out for vulnerable children, is a very different animal than being in the classroom.

Mistressiggi · 11/04/2020 23:05

Do you think any of those people are on mumsnet? If not it's not really our fault is it?
OP you should have guessed that a thread in the staffroom section asking for a break from teacher criticism would lead to just more of the same... so tiring.

crazycatgal · 11/04/2020 23:06

@Glitterbug76 Do you think it is teachers who decide which children are allowed a place in school?

FinnefanFox · 11/04/2020 23:07

My sons teachers deserve recognition because everyone of them is working and we have had lots of support from them during this!

Glitterbug76 · 11/04/2020 23:07

Crazycatgirl
Are you refuring to me or my child in that sentence ?? Who then if you don’t want to look after my child do you think will look after you / your parents / child / brother sister when they come into my hospital.

crazycatgal · 11/04/2020 23:09

@Glitterbug76 I don't understand your response. I am saying do you think it is teachers who have the power to decide which children are allowed into school? Because it isn't,

GuyFawkesDay · 11/04/2020 23:10

If there's a non key worker in the family they do.

Like my husband. When I'm in school, he's home looking after the kids. Because he's not a keyworker!

FrippEnos · 11/04/2020 23:13

Glitterbug76

that is a whole lot of hearsay.

sproutsandparsnips · 11/04/2020 23:18

We are all working differently. I am a nurse. I am not working as a selfless angel atm because my role does not allow it. I can't do what I want to do and what I think I should be doing because of the constraints upon me. It doesn't mean I am any less stressed - it's a different sort of pressure, and I think it's the same for my colleagues and for absolutely everyone else, whether it be different working, too much work or not enough work. We should be working together and supporting one another, not bashing people (and I think that generally we are) SmileWineCakeThanks

Glitterbug76 · 11/04/2020 23:22

FripEnos
No hear say just the truth , it’s just really hurtful when you want to go to work and help people to hear how teachers feel about your child. When it’s actually us who are on the front line in hospital my neighbour whose a teacher did say that to me why should we be subjected to key workers kids who potentially will have the virus. And I’ve just had my cousin whose sons deteriorating and her husbands had to leave the prison he works to help look after him so get your facts straight. Like I said please tell me about the good stories.

FreeButtonBee · 11/04/2020 23:23

I did raise an eyebrow when the head sent an email saying try to do 3 hrs work a day. Come on. We are trying to keep our fucking jobs here and all use the same broadband and laptops all day long

FrippEnos · 11/04/2020 23:26

Glitterbug76

2 out of 5 are not hearsay the others are as you have been told by other people.

YgritteSnow · 11/04/2020 23:27

I think teachers are not above criticism but some of them seem to think they are and this is a repeated theme I see both on MN and in RL. I find the assertions that people are "envious" really annoying as well. Teachers have a lot of power in people's children's lives. Their children are the most important thing in life to most people and that's why you get questioned and called to account a lot. Not because people are jealous of your holidays! It seems that any questioning at all is "teacher bashing" and is met with often hostile and obstructive responses which just perpetuate the cycle of "them and us". I expect this will be robustly denied. On the last thread I said it on I was insulted and verbally abused by the "teacher" who had started the thread so 🤷‍♀️

Mistressiggi · 11/04/2020 23:30

I have a wee suspicion the OP started this thread so teachers could discuss the question she posed, but you all just crack on, we're used to it.

Glitterbug76 · 11/04/2020 23:34

Crazy cat gal
Heaven forbid a little child coming right up to you because they don’t understand social distancing I’m absolutely shocked at that and the language after ! Your supposed to be a teacher, if you think that of a child I really don’t think this is the job for you ! Some of these children havnt a clue what’s going on and like my daughter missing there mummy and daddy’s who are working long hours !! And probably mistakenly think that you would care.
