Victim alert. More articles about Meg's 'private torment' today in the Times. There seems to be a gentle medua ground swell of sympathy for poor Meg. If she's managed to reverse their direct public image she's doing something right.

@MeghanAndTheSeals Re: MN usability and functionality - I have settled on using the mobile site having downloaded the free browser DuckDuckGo. This browser strips out all the superfluous content and the copious adverts on MN that make it so glitchy. It’s a much better experience tbh.

Yes, I suppose it gets attention.

It gets attention, and she's probably easy to book (what else is she doing?) and not too expensive.

But overall it undermines the whole premise and point of the show. A cookery contest with a judge who doesn't know about cooking? There's a limit to how many times you can do that before the whole idea implodes. Short term gain, long term loss.

Pity, because Australia is a long way away, and I'd be happy to see them keeping her there and keeping her semi-occupied.

HAM got what they want. Front and centre of headlines again. This is a win for them

Despite their PR feeding the media, and the media repeating their line, the majority of the general public are not buying it ! The general commentary is asking the same question, ‘why did she do nothing’ and ‘why did she lie for all these years’.

And it’s the general public they need to win over.

Times doesn't seem to appreciate that 'private' is the complete opposite of 'plaster it all over the media.'

Abbeycrunch · Today 09:05

I found the Oz Masterchef annoucement unbelievably crass. Any sympathy for MM should by filtered through the multiple ways she has consistently manipulated the news narrative even though (as is now apparent) she knew she was only presenting at best a partial 'truth.' I despair of the royal pack. They seem to lack not only basic journalistic skills but a basic curiosity.

I am staggered that they keep on getting what they want despite all the misery and chaos they cause for others.

I agree. No matter how many people try to defend them and shame anyone criticising them, or how many articles are put out about how upset they are, it won’t change the fact that most people would approach things differently where the potential SA of children is concerned, and will be viewing the situation through that lense. I actually think the articles about how upset she is and the defence of them are making things far worse for them in the eyes of the public.

HoldMyWine · Today 09:14

Is it possible the positive media spin is at the behest of the RF? Are they trying to rehabilitate HaMs image? I can’t think why the media are being so unquestioning and sympathetic? If we can see how mendacious HaM are why can’t they?

No. It's not possible.

I think they're (the MSM) looking at the Jason Arday situation, iyswim,

KatStratford · Today 09:15

Either the entire UK MSM is suffering from collective amnesia or they are playing the long game. They are currently in a phase of establishing their bona fides as sympathetic supporters of victims of abuse and CSA knowing that before too long a story will drop that discredits what we have been told so far and undermines the current narrative. At this point they can legitimately say that there was nothing but goodwill and support as they lob the grenades and watch the detonated bombshells exploding all round.
They are not as naive or gullible as they currently appear and are employing a “give them enough rope” strategy.

Agree. Picking holes in someone's story of DF's CSA is a sure way to attract a lot of adverse comment and criticism. I suspect the media (esp the DM) is waiting for the holes in the narrative to be pointed out.

And MN being what it is, it would be naive to assume some parts of the media aren't watching what is said here. I was quite surprised that the thread asking if the RF should take them back was actually overwhelmingly negative.

Dontevenlookatme · Today 09:23

The narrative has become extremely muddled. This stems from allegations that TM Snr possessed multiple images of CSA. It seems to have extended to him actually committing CSA. The timelines are all over the place, everyone’s running round with their hair on fire.

Oh for the days of proper investigative journalism…

The media like to have different, even contradictory narrative arcs going on simultaneously. It benefits them to "both sides" stories because they can create never-ending sagas this way and produce clickbait whenever they have an opportunity to produce a "shock revelation" or "unexpected twist", or conjure up tales of woe and regret.

Meghan is a never-ending source of soap opera storylines for them, and now it appears she's feeding material directly to the formerly evil British press. They'll "be kind" for a news cycle or two, but will switch as soon as there's a new twist in the tale.

Absolutely. I just don’t get it. The timeline is so obviously off yet the media are brushing this under the carpet.

I doubt that will be much comfort to her husband.

I believe it was in the OW interview he said the press build you up to knock you down.

And while his truthiness has had variable mileage, he wasn’t wrong in that assessment of the media. Certainly not in the age of clicks.

Clicks for sympathy, more clicks for retraction of sympathy and yet more clicks for not just retraction of sympathy but timelines with contradictions, holes and lots of horrified hand waving. Most of it faux. Because the sympathy was poured with the forthcoming kicking down already locked and loaded.

He may not be an intellectual heavyweight but he’s seen this game before and clearly stated he knows how it works.

"Oh for the days of proper investigative journalism…"

Meghan and the rest of the Markles have actually given the British press the opportunity to revert to their natural feral state, which they'd had to tamp down since the 2010s as a result of the Molly Dowler phone hacking case and its myriad repercussions, as well as the advent of social media, which really knocked them back. The press hasn't been able to break a "story" (to the extent that there is a story) like this since its glory days of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Given however that there are serous criminal allegations at the heart of this story and an investigation has not been conducted and no one has been found guilty of anything thus far, they had better be careful because it could boomerang badly on them.

MrsLeonFarrell · Today 09:31

I'm just going to jump into this point, can't possibly catch up with the thread, apologies if this point has been made.

I read the BBC article this morning and I realised what I'm finding strange about a lot of the press coverage, there is no complexity. I feel sorry for Meghan having to process that the father she loved is an alleged sex offender, that isn't something I would wish on anyone. I can wish that the Sussexes would employ and listen to effective PR because I find their amateur efforts wince inducing. It isn't fun to watch them turns wins into losses and muck up what should have been a straightforward sympathy inducing situation for Meghan.

At the same time I can feel negatively towards Meghan for her comments on the Oprah interview and extremely negatively towards Harry for his book and interviews and what seems to have been a completed lack of understanding what being a working royal is and how things change when you leave that job.

I wish that the press would behave like grown ups and if they have to write articles at least reflect the complexity rather than pandering to social media with a goodies and baddies narrative as if they were writing for Cbeebies.

Meghan jumping onto the Sun hours after her brother & giving the wrong year in her statement about a subject as serious as CSA completely diminished any bit of credibility she could have gained...

I would think the opposite - the media are using this to take swipes at the RF, eventually there will be articles criticising the RF as to why they have not supported her or issued statements saying they support her.

This is exactly what's going to happen. And shame on RF for not bringing her back into the fold
