And yes she was a producer.

Why would Thomas J and Samantha not have dined out on that one if was true?

Perhaps they don't know. There's no reason why they would have known really.

Chaostheory12 · Today 07:27

People keep referring to Doria as a 'social worker'. If she was actually a fully trained qualified social worker I'm not sure jail time would have been a positive. I think she may have worked with the elderly for a while but doubt she was actually a social worker.

Both she and Thomas went bankrupt at different points , and she ran a shop for a while. There is a lot of murkiness and unexplained dysfunction in that family generally.

She needs a Australian work permit right?

Australia are very strict. I remember watching an Australian border control TV programme when I was recovering from surgery and there were multiple UK/US citizens who were deported because they thought they could just rock up and work. One was a singer who had been invited to do one gig without pay.

Australia famously deported Novak Djokovic in 2022 because he was in breach of border conditions by refusing to have a COVID vaccination. IIRC he was held in illegal immigrant accommodation.

Edited

Do you think she wouldn't have a work permit arranged for her if she was going to film a couple of episodes of a TV show? She's already filmed one episode of a show in Australia and must have had the correct visa for that.

With 20/20 Hindsight
This headline was probably a big red rag to a herd of Markle bulls
Possibly communicated to him to explain away why he’d never met the majority of her family. Perhaps not intended as something he would go on to yak to the press.

The ”patient zero” PR blunder that unleashed a thousand more blunders made when trying to cope with the fallout of a previous blunder.

So, obviously the RF were welcoming and supportive? She was part of the family from early on. That narrative changed, didn't it?

Mondommountain · Today 07:30

Lots of Aussies complaining how they have so many Australian talented chefs and ex Masterchef winners who should have been given the opportunity.

The profile of the show is already getting a lot of attention, there is already a petition to not have her on the show, the advertising dollars will be rolling in. Mission accomplished for the show, not so much for Meghan.

Pre mumsnet I was ivillage.com (which is now a shadow of its former self) as soon as I released I was upduffed.

It was very American-centric. And one of the things that stood out to me was how much more common it was over there for children of divorce to live with their fathers. Generally it appeared to be motivated by logistics and the hard facts of life. The father may have a better address for a good school. Better placed to juggle child care and work. Established at work while the mother was having to re-establish after a period of no work/low work during the early years of child rearing.

It is entirely possible the mystery behind Doria leaving her daughter with her dad is only a mystery because to British eyes it looks highly unusual. Whereas from an American perspective (of that time) it was less unusual.

The couple of days sympathy from the media didn't last long, now the dust is setting the real questions are being asked.

They've had chance to look at it and check timelines.

The records are expunged, which you can do in America. On Youtube there is an interview with Tom Bower about his book Revenge, about the Sussexes. In the interview, he says "At X point, Doria disappears from Megan's life for X number of years. Legally, I can't tell you why." Well, I can. I am married to someone with a lot of contacts. He was a journalist on a UK national newspaper for six years - it probably qualifies as the most feared one. He's now a columnist on an American national paper, but still writes for Private Eye sometimes and of course is still in touch with his colleagues back on the UK national. He says that the jail sentence for drugs is what Bower is referring to, which he got direct from the source and which is well-known among journalists on national papers. DH said they have never published it because it's not Meghan's fault. National newspapers do have a code of ethics, I guess. And there might be a super-injunction but I'm not sure. I don't think I asked him. We are divorcing but amicable, and this came up quite some time ago when we were having lunch.

"He says that the jail sentence for drugs is what Bower is referring to, which he got direct from the source and which is well-known among journalists on national papers."

I'm a little sceptical about this drug claim. To be incarcerated for several years she'd have to have been a serious drug dealer, probably operating or part of a network and involving violence, not just for simple possession of marijuana. And I think there'd be a lot more remaining evidence if Doria had involved in that kind of activity. How would journalists know about it if it's been wiped clean from records?

Also, how exactly do you expunge a criminal record? There's always going to be some evidence still lying around. If Doria had been in jail for drug-related offences, for example, wouldn't she'd surely have some ex-cell mate willing to do an interview for cash. Or some news articles from the day. What drug offence do some people even believe she was incarcerated for?

I think we should start with the dates of when Meghan lived with Thomas Markle and work from there to work out this puzzle.

Meghan should have done the same before she released her statement, stating the wrong year as each hasn't helped her credibility & just reinforced "recollections may vary" when it comes to the Hams...

Amanda Platell executes a swift about-turn: No more sympathy for MM from her.
(Apologies if this has already been posted.)

https://archive.ph/f2MYv

That does make me wonder if someone at the Mail said 'Amanda, you know that sympathy slop you poured all over MM last week? you might want to have a look at this,' and AP has gone popeyed in disbelief.

It's always amusing when journalist (using the word loosely in AP's case) have to do a fast reverse ferret

I think a lot of drama could have been avoided by Meghan gritting her teeth and inviting all her ghastly relatives to the wedding. They would have sold some stories but it would have been a one day wonder and not left them with dangerous and festering resentment. It would have made Meghan more relatable than her approach of pretending they didn't exist. Kate had dodgy Uncle Gary at her wedding. It's always better to keep people in the tent.

I think the exact same it would have showed her as human, everyone has ghastly relatives someone along the line.. it would have shown she has the common touch which would have appealed to all of us.

I don’t know about that, the Markles were absolutely the worst of the worst. She was absolutely correct to not invite them, I would never criticise her for that, I felt so sorry for her dealing with all that in the lead up to her wedding at the time.

What I don’t understand is why her black relatives were not invited, who by all accounts are decent working class people, and have never said a bad word about her.

She's SO GOOD at earning money for media outlets. She must be on a "clicks" commission with the red tops😂And now more advertising for Aussie MasterChef than they could have imagined.

Agree, I don't see why work permissions etc would automatically be a problem.

Gor certain jobs/roles you can (or certainly used to be able to) get a very short term/very temporary work visa fairly quickly - in olden days if in the UK it just involved a quick visit to Australia House in London clutching paperwork from your sponsor/employer.

It's no doubt all on line now.

So why do you think Meghan lived with her dad for much of her childhood, and what is Tom Bower referring to when he says that at X point Doria disappears from Doria's life for X number of years and says that legally he can't say why? This is in an interview with him on Youtube, and he is known for being a serious journalist whose sources are impeccable.

Strictly speaking, Tom Bower is a barrister and writer of biographies, not a journalist. He says he writes books about people he doesn’t like and has no compunction about stating his bias. He avoids legal challenge by meticulously listing the sources from which his claims are drawn, so he is always repeating something second hand and can’t be accused of defamation.

I’ve read some of his books and they are interesting but I wouldn't take everything he says as gospel. Some of the things he writes are very much under cover of someone else’s claims.

Which may explain why so many articles on this story disappeared so quickly from the Sun and DM websites on Monday.
As an aside. Did anyone else notice that the Amanda Platell article used photos with MM and TMS sitting in the exact same position? I'm sure photos are chosen carefully, in this case to make MM and TMS look like two peas from the same murky pod. Devious.

There could be several reasons. I don't really care about Meghan's childhood so haven't given it much thought.

However, it's exceedingly unlikely that a possible prison stay could be kept secret, for the reasons I and others have pointed out above. Any suggestion to the contrary is speculation heaped upon innuendo upon rumour.

As I don't want this thread to turn into a certain Reddit sub I'm not going to discuss this any further.
