The royal family

Harry & Meghan - what does the future hold?

I’m not really sure whether I can articulate this very well, but I’ll give it my best shot.

I think I support a route for Harry and Meghan to find a route back into the fold of the royal family, and find that odd and conflicting given everything that has happened.

I found the Oprah interview, the freedom flight, the Spare revelations awful. It felt really unpleasant the way Meghan came into the royal family, was active for so little time and then criticised it all so publicly and in a way that seemed a bit of a cultural miss (I’m not referring to the racism allegations here). I think that her American mindset perhaps did not fully understand the tacit consent nature of the royal family and the constitutional delicacies with which the titles are held. This is why it makes commercialisation and speaking at round tables about ‘power’, jarring.

However, despite ALL of this this, I see two human beings. One man who has grown up, without any consent, in a strange institution, in the glare of the spotless, completely traumatised by the death of his mother in horrendous circumstances when he was a young boy. A veteran too. Although not comparable to this, Meghan clearly has also had a dysfunctional childhood too. These latest revelations around her father mean that from the outside, none of us really know what’s going on.

I would like them all to just be happy. I feel like collectively it would be awesome as a nation if we could give the family the framework to sort it all out by just saying ‘look, H&M, you did some crazy shit, it was hugely damaging and cruel. But we understand that you guys have gone through crap too. Let’s look forward- try and sort it out’.

I’d honestly like to be done with the drama and for everyone to just get on. Does anyone else feel like this? I know it doesn’t really work like this in practice, I’m just trying to get across how I’m feeling.

Please also try and be a bit kind in your responses. I think this is coming from a place where everything just feels really negative/heavy in life at the moment and the need for some positivity,

Either you have no idea what I refer to or you have no empathy or imagination.

No, you're just massively exaggerating.

They seek it constantly though.

They are actually in deep do-do now and they know it.

They're doing their own stuff. They like charity work and advocacy.
People are so very hateful towards them... now even blaming her for not telling the world about the allegations against her dad.

The public were so very critical of her cutting contact with her dad. Even recently saying charity begins at home and she should reconcile with him.

There is no shifting in the minds of the hate they face... but at the same time....there's an awful lot of people are behind them.

It begins and ends with racism...

I personally believe it begins and ends with very poor decision making.

Do you really believe they are 'just living their lives as they see fit?'
Do you really think they want to be living in someone else's house back in the UK after all the excitement of the 'Freedom flight' overseas away from the UK?
I think the vast majority of people want them to be settled, happy and living the private life they asked for. In my mind they could benefit from the wisdom of the Men in Grey Suits. I think they are being woefully advised. Things could have been so different.

I believe they're living their lives as best as they can. I have no idea what truly brought them back to the UK... but they have every right to do the charity work they do.

They don't have to hide behind closed doors. They aren't fugitives... they can be as public as they choose to be.

It's very easy for Joe public to talk, when they don’t know the facts and continue to speculate.

I think it just goes to show what a well oiled machine the Palace machine is. This is what H and M are missing. Instead we have hastily released statements which then require corrections, ill advised court cases, poorly chosen schools for the children, a scatter gun approach to causes close to their hearts. It's sad they don't have the benefit of the MGS. I want them to be successful as private citizens I really do. But the decisions they make seem so knee jerk and poorly thought out.

Blaming racism is lazy. There was some racism in the early days, but there was also a public enthusiasm for her too. It's her behaviour that has tuned people against her, not the fact that she is 43% Nigeran.

It is what it is. The racism is so enriched in people, they can't see beyond their noses

Spot on.

And the racism came mainly from the US press, not the British public.

But Team Sussex are utterly desperate now.

Do you think H and M might look back and perhaps agree that they might have done things differently? Do you think they aren't responsible at all for the ill advised decisions they have taken? Or is it all down to Racism?

The well oiled machine that had no concern for her mental health... no no concern for how she was constantly misrepresented in the media... they made her out to be the bully that made Kate cry....okay... that well oiled machine.

Whatever brought them back to the UK......good luck to them in living the life THEY want with their children - Not the life people want them to live.

Everybody is entitled to live life as they choose... Whatever that may be.

You mean entrenched or ingrained, not enriched.

Unconscious bias in this case is not going to triumph over seven years of entitled behaviour, lying, humiliation of her husband, attention-seeking, and mock Royal tours played out in front of the media. You assume people are stupid and unable to assess the reality of what they see unfolding before them.

I'm sure on reflection, they may have done some things differently...I think we all would in aspects of our life.

That doesn't mean racism doesn't play a big part in this. People can choose to say it's not an issue... they can discount her lived experience if they wish. It wouldn't be the first and won't be the last time a person of colour (and their partner) have experience this.

The two, are not mutually exclusive.

We're not privy to their inside conversations..... they just need to be allowed to live their lives as they choose.

The media coverage is often unnecessary, as it just fuels more hate and nastiness.

This is where I have a problem with both H and M being adults. As you say everybody is entitled to life as they choose, but as a fully functioning adult aren't we responsible for our mental health? Can they not pick up a phone and speak to a Doctor (no one else acts for me?) Why were the Palace responsible for Meghan?

Live their lives as they choose? They have been explicit that they are public figures. With that comes media attention, positive and negative. They can't be public figures and attract only positive media attention. No-one can.

The great British public are full of hate for H and M. At this point they are just living their lives as they see fit.

They don't need anyone's approval to be who they are.

And making a first class pig ear of it too!

Yes. Thanks. A typo. I was typing in haste.

People will stick with what they believe.

We don't have to have the same opinion. I just don't think the online hate, nastiness and cruelty towards them is productive.

Truly, the online criticism must hurt. No one wants to be criticised so continually and so publicly. But surely there comes a time for some self reflection, some taking of responsibility and some better decision making!

The online hate, nastiness and cruelty are unnecessary and could never be productive. That includes the Sussex Squad, doing a good job of reminding us that white people can also be the targets of racism.

When the actions or inactions of Palace are contributing to their mental health in a negative way.. that's an issue.

I also don't think then contacting professionals, is as easy as it would be for you or I. This is something she mentioned on relation to accessing support.
