The royal family

Harry & Meghan - what does the future hold?

I’m not really sure whether I can articulate this very well, but I’ll give it my best shot.

I think I support a route for Harry and Meghan to find a route back into the fold of the royal family, and find that odd and conflicting given everything that has happened.

I found the Oprah interview, the freedom flight, the Spare revelations awful. It felt really unpleasant the way Meghan came into the royal family, was active for so little time and then criticised it all so publicly and in a way that seemed a bit of a cultural miss (I’m not referring to the racism allegations here). I think that her American mindset perhaps did not fully understand the tacit consent nature of the royal family and the constitutional delicacies with which the titles are held. This is why it makes commercialisation and speaking at round tables about ‘power’, jarring.

However, despite ALL of this this, I see two human beings. One man who has grown up, without any consent, in a strange institution, in the glare of the spotless, completely traumatised by the death of his mother in horrendous circumstances when he was a young boy. A veteran too. Although not comparable to this, Meghan clearly has also had a dysfunctional childhood too. These latest revelations around her father mean that from the outside, none of us really know what’s going on.

I would like them all to just be happy. I feel like collectively it would be awesome as a nation if we could give the family the framework to sort it all out by just saying ‘look, H&M, you did some crazy shit, it was hugely damaging and cruel. But we understand that you guys have gone through crap too. Let’s look forward- try and sort it out’.

I’d honestly like to be done with the drama and for everyone to just get on. Does anyone else feel like this? I know it doesn’t really work like this in practice, I’m just trying to get across how I’m feeling.

Please also try and be a bit kind in your responses. I think this is coming from a place where everything just feels really negative/heavy in life at the moment and the need for some positivity,

I used to pay to be a member of Republic. But you only need to have even the vaguest concept of politics to understand that the abolition of the monarchy is not going to be something any party has a political appetite for at the moment.

Tell me about it!

I’ve just said that on another thread. Whatever we think as individuals we’re all facing more pressing problems at present. I hope we can at least agree on that.

@LipglossAndLies I highly doubt that the late Queen would insinuate that those who work in public service are unworthy. Let's not forget that she spent decades visiting hospitals, talking to staff and patients, talking to those who had been caught up in disasters etc. Dishing out awards for courageous acts, having to fly around the world meeting leaders of other countries and such like, whether she wanted to or not. She even met with Liz Truss on the DAY BEFORE she died.
So I think her late Majesty deserves a little more respect, dont you?

Which part mocked the monarch?

Here we go again.

Curtsying is unique to the Royal family. When Meghan has curtsied to members of the Royal family eg at Queen Elizabeth's funeral, she as done so in the same way as other members of the family.

When she curtsied on TV, she wildly exaggerated her movements and gestures. The message: here's what I think of this ritual that is unique to your family. To show you how ridiculous I think it is, I'm giving a performance for all the world to see.

She didn't say: 'Curtsying is something not everyone is familiar with. Let me show you how it's done.' then curtsying as she did at the queen's funeral.

She was blatantly taking the piss out of herself not knowing how to do a curtsy.

She did. If you are not working in the royal family you are not doing public service. Thousands of public sector workers mant of who work their entire lives in (i know many who started as young as 18 and are now close to retirement) go to work every day providing a public service. Its insulting to say thay if you step away from working for the royal family you are not doing it.

She should of been more respectful to all those in the public sector herself if she wants respect back.

Oh yes, even H could see that and he didn't look uncomfortable at all did he?

But she curtseyed perfectly on Suits, so she did know how.

I'll say it again. She was simultaneously taking the piss out of herself and mocking the monarchy. I'm not going to explain again something you are unwilling to see.

Harry grimaced!

She's far too vacuous and narcissistic to appreciate the beauty and history of the traditional culture of any culture, not even her own. Willfully ignorant, utterly shallow and entirely self obsessed.

This level of vitriolic dislike is what confounds me about the whole H and M thing, grown people ranting on about perceived character flaws and possible mental health diagnoses. How in any way do they impact on your life, it's not as if they are politicians whose decisions affect our lives

TheHatTrick · 24/10/2026 17:05

Actually this goes right to the part about the curtsey

They're in the news all the time. We get their rubbish shoved down our necks all the time. Even the Telegraph insists on reporting their every move.

I don’t see anything approaching’ranting’ on here. I see well-put, articulate analysis of 2 people who are currently in the headlines and who have tried very hard to keep themselves there for many years.

If you claim to be a public figure (which HaM both recently asserted) and you constantly seek publicity and attention, then the corollary will be scrutiny from the public.

Actually, in my experience on here, the nastiness more usually comes from Team Sussex.

Often on here, I see an inability to distinguish between engagement with the HaM story and strong negative emotion towards them as individuals. As I have never met HaM, I don't have personal feelings towards them but I find the story they tell about themselves and the story the media tell about them absorbing and entertaining, to my chagrin.

All very fair comments! I know the practical realities are that this is probably all far too complex to unpick and resolve. I just think it’s very sad for all involved (though not without fault).

I feel the same as you.
Harry is very damaged but behaved badly.
If William could be forgiving then maybe then maybe Harry and Meghan could be brought back in to the fold.
If Diana was alive it would break her heart to see her boys at loggerheads.

SandyY2K · 24/10/2026 17:30

The great British public are full of hate for H and M. At this point they are just living their lives as they see fit.

They don't need anyone's approval to be who they are.

WildWindySeascape · 24/10/2026 17:31

I don’t think HAM could rejoin the working royals as they would not be willing to follow protocol and would continuously be jealous of William and Catherine.

I do think the British public would forgive Harry if he showed contrition, but that won’t happen.

And yes, Meghan was definitely mocking British royal tradition with her curtsy demonstration. Could you imagine Queen Mary of Denmark doing something like that when she first married into the Danish royal family? She would not have dared. It’s such a shame Meghan didn’t take a leaf out of her book as Mary’s transition from Aussie commoner to Danish royal was flawless.

It’s not on William.

Not everything is reversible or forgiveable. Harry and Meghan have done and said awful things which put W and C through a living hell. They’ve never apologised or shown remorse, or even any understanding of what damage they’ve done.

I don’t think W sees anything good in allowing his jealous and angry brother or his sly SIL back into their lives.

They seek it constantly though.

They are actually in deep do-do now and they know it.

People really have lost all sense of perspective.

Do you really believe they are 'just living their lives as they see fit?'
Do you really think they want to be living in someone else's house back in the UK after all the excitement of the 'Freedom flight' overseas away from the UK?
I think the vast majority of people want them to be settled, happy and living the private life they asked for. In my mind they could benefit from the wisdom of the Men in Grey Suits. I think they are being woefully advised. Things could have been so different.
