The royal family

Harry & Meghan - what does the future hold?

I’m not really sure whether I can articulate this very well, but I’ll give it my best shot.

I think I support a route for Harry and Meghan to find a route back into the fold of the royal family, and find that odd and conflicting given everything that has happened.

I found the Oprah interview, the freedom flight, the Spare revelations awful. It felt really unpleasant the way Meghan came into the royal family, was active for so little time and then criticised it all so publicly and in a way that seemed a bit of a cultural miss (I’m not referring to the racism allegations here). I think that her American mindset perhaps did not fully understand the tacit consent nature of the royal family and the constitutional delicacies with which the titles are held. This is why it makes commercialisation and speaking at round tables about ‘power’, jarring.

However, despite ALL of this this, I see two human beings. One man who has grown up, without any consent, in a strange institution, in the glare of the spotless, completely traumatised by the death of his mother in horrendous circumstances when he was a young boy. A veteran too. Although not comparable to this, Meghan clearly has also had a dysfunctional childhood too. These latest revelations around her father mean that from the outside, none of us really know what’s going on.

I would like them all to just be happy. I feel like collectively it would be awesome as a nation if we could give the family the framework to sort it all out by just saying ‘look, H&M, you did some crazy shit, it was hugely damaging and cruel. But we understand that you guys have gone through crap too. Let’s look forward- try and sort it out’.

I’d honestly like to be done with the drama and for everyone to just get on. Does anyone else feel like this? I know it doesn’t really work like this in practice, I’m just trying to get across how I’m feeling.

Please also try and be a bit kind in your responses. I think this is coming from a place where everything just feels really negative/heavy in life at the moment and the need for some positivity,

I was at my craft group on Thursday, so before the story about M's father broke. Most of the group are over the age of 50 and are generally supportive of the Royal Family.

The subject of H&M was discussed for a short while and no-one was supportive of them. They were perplexed by the mock royal engagements in Nottingham the week before and the constant need for them to be in the news.

There has been a feeling, discussed quite a few times, that if H&M had gone and lived quietly in Canada they wouldn't have got themselves into all the financial and publicity issues and could have been included in family occasions

But, having said so much in the Oprah interview and in Spare, those words cannot be undone. And one elderly lady said that seeing M do the mock curtsy took away the last bit of support she had for M

My own feeling is that all trust between the working Royal Family and H&M has gone and will never be regained. I think it's highly likely they have significant financial issues and the dilemma for KC is whether to keep giving them sufficient financial assistance with an agreement not to publish another book or to cut them off financially altogether (which, I am sure, PW will do when he becomes King)

That would be the whole over 50 thing!

I know loads of people who don’t mind them & loads who aren’t interested in any of the RF at all.

Well I am British and think it is absolutely embarrassing that people bow and curtsy to the royal family.

As has been explained already, no-one has to. The royals are very relaxed re this.

You dpnt have to do it. But don't mock people who do as a sign of respect to the head of state. Remember this country is very very old and has a lot of traditions that we keep. The fact that we still bow and curtesy to the head of state shows people still support doing it. If we didn't support doing it it would go the same way as wearing a bustle.

Remember its not the person you are showing respect to but what it represents. MM didnt understand this because I don't think she's a deep thinker and didnt want to learn. Remember the fuss about knowing hymns..in her own language so probably not that much of a chore. Just do it and appreciate all the good things. Like how ancient the hymns are and how beautiful.

Of course it’s not a rule, how on earth could it be in 2026?! The Royals cannot be anything other than relaxed about it as what would be the alternative?

The only way Harry and Meghan can be welcomed back in the family they would need to live a quiet life. No press, no silly pretend walk abouts.
None of these they will do.

It'll be sensational headlines all the way. They've only been back a few weeks and what with speculation about schools, that letter from King Charles, visit to Nottingham, the never ending security and now this latest. When this dies down whats next.

Quite - I don’t know what the fuss is about.

couchpouch · 24/10/2026 16:06

The press wouldn’t write articles if they weren’t consumed…

Harry takes up football as a fan (not Aston Villa obviously) and he and William end up at the same match cheering on opposing teams. Megan goes on the Underground and Archie gets on Britain's Got Talent playing the spoons (badly),

She's far too vacuous and narcissistic to appreciate the beauty and history of the traditional culture of any culture, not even her own. Willfully ignorant, utterly shallow and entirely self obsessed.

I couldn’t give a toss if they’re relaxed about it or not. It’s not their decision.

couchpouch · 24/10/2026 16:13

@BluejumperdogIm not particularly bothered if they are in or out but they haven’t offended me personally because I don’t know any of the Royals. However as a pp said I’m over the Royals since the disgraceful actions of Andrew & their behaviour. I hope there will be reform by the time my dc are adults

This is a prime example of what I find so odd, some people are personally offended. Maybe it’s the case if you buy into the soap opera of the RF, I guess it’s a real life panto for some 😆

The whole concept of the monarchy is a load of bollocks and should be done away with. Neither they nor the institution deserve any respect.

But Meghan was very clearly mocking herself for doing a very low curtsy.

I’m not sure I understand the question - do you mean alternatives to bowing etc?

I’veseen lots of folk getting their gongs, or people meeting royals on official visits and most just stand respectfully, as you would for any “ official “. Some bob their heads and occasionally some curtseying.

Sorry if I’ve missed the point!

She was multi-tasking (!), mocking herself and the monarchy simultaneously. How she managed to drive herself through to the conclusion of the £32m wedding she later dismissed as a spectacle is beyond me when she finds the monarchy (with good reason) risible.

What are you personally doing to campaign for the abolition of the monarchy?

There are so many keyboard republicans on here - but you actually need to lobby your MP and do something other than tell us how much you dislike them!

If there was a campaign group to persuade HaM to go back to the US, I’d certainly be putting my money where mouth is!😂

Well its the system we've got and there's no call for a President Trump style arrangement yet. MM may have thought she was hilarious with her "medieval times" gag but clearly it backfired hugely and shes one of the most unpopular royals now. For various reasons. Including taking the piss out of the Queen.

Be in no doubt…H and M are most definitely royalists!

Their main problem is that they didn’t think they were royal enough.

Horrid having to walk behind WaC all the time.

I used to pay to be a member of Republic. But you only need to have even the vaguest concept of politics to understand that the abolition of the monarchy is not going to be something any party has a political appetite for at the moment.

I thought demanding that massive wedding then calling it a spectacle for the masses was mocking everyone.
