The royal family

Harry & Meghan - what does the future hold?

I’m not really sure whether I can articulate this very well, but I’ll give it my best shot.

I think I support a route for Harry and Meghan to find a route back into the fold of the royal family, and find that odd and conflicting given everything that has happened.

I found the Oprah interview, the freedom flight, the Spare revelations awful. It felt really unpleasant the way Meghan came into the royal family, was active for so little time and then criticised it all so publicly and in a way that seemed a bit of a cultural miss (I’m not referring to the racism allegations here). I think that her American mindset perhaps did not fully understand the tacit consent nature of the royal family and the constitutional delicacies with which the titles are held. This is why it makes commercialisation and speaking at round tables about ‘power’, jarring.

However, despite ALL of this this, I see two human beings. One man who has grown up, without any consent, in a strange institution, in the glare of the spotless, completely traumatised by the death of his mother in horrendous circumstances when he was a young boy. A veteran too. Although not comparable to this, Meghan clearly has also had a dysfunctional childhood too. These latest revelations around her father mean that from the outside, none of us really know what’s going on.

I would like them all to just be happy. I feel like collectively it would be awesome as a nation if we could give the family the framework to sort it all out by just saying ‘look, H&M, you did some crazy shit, it was hugely damaging and cruel. But we understand that you guys have gone through crap too. Let’s look forward- try and sort it out’.

I’d honestly like to be done with the drama and for everyone to just get on. Does anyone else feel like this? I know it doesn’t really work like this in practice, I’m just trying to get across how I’m feeling.

Please also try and be a bit kind in your responses. I think this is coming from a place where everything just feels really negative/heavy in life at the moment and the need for some positivity,

The royal family is an institution that makes up the British culture. QE2 as Queen represented the country. We have a constitutional monarchy.

Are you actually from the UK and if so have you ever taken an interest in how your country is run?

The institution of the monarchy is part of British culture, as is opposition to the monarchy. But mocking the practice of curtsying (which isn’t even what she did) is not mocking British culture.

I don't mean to be rude but a great many of your posts are somewhat incomprehensible.

Try not to take the criticism of Meghan Markle so personally, she wouldn't trouble herself about you if you were dying in the street at her feet. Other than to check for cameras and consider the optics.

No offence taken - it's all a bit of fun in my world.

So what? They don’t need anyone’s approval. Most people will not think about them at all.

I think the speed with which they send out “sources close to” them to respond whenever anything happens proves otherwise.

At the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles: Someone announced, “The Duchess of Sussex,” as she arrived in a golf cart to meet a group of girls.
At a New York City brownstone: A house manager announced, “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,” when the journalist arrived, even though the writer noted that only the two of them appeared to be in the house.

The name thing was on “With Love Meghan” when Mindy Kaling said something about no one believing Meghan Markle would eat Jack in the Box. Meghan got all faux giggly to hide her offense “You know I’m Sussex now!”
Mindy looked like she’d been smacked.

Insufferable woman. Imagine a shady old thing like her being so grandiose.

She’s not representing our country though.

OK, this is my last reply to you as we are obviously never going to agree

H&M were working royals then decided they didn't want to be anymore. Sort of. Because H in particular seems intent on carrying out "engagements" in a manner that we normally only encounter from the working Royal Family.

They have now returned to the UK and last Thursday both visited Nottingham for a highly publicised day of charity engagements.

They are constantly pushing the narrative of "service". If they knew how to behave themselves in a respectful manner I would be more sympathetic towards them but the constant shenanigans (of which the mock curtsy is only one small example) doesn't endear me to them

Bye!

People who don't need anybody's approval don't go on voluntary 'engagements' and create news stories that put them on the front pages. A large part of ther lives is dedicated to securing approval by playing the victim.

Errrr . . . William, Beatrice & Eugenie all seem to have managed very well. And Lady Louise has just graduated and didn't seem to have any issues

I don't know why the Wales children will "go through hell"

Well they are far more notable than the second-raters aren’t they for a start and George is heir. My point revolves around the ubiquitousness of camera phones now which didn't apply back in William and Harry’s times. How do they go out and socialise normally with private detectives , security and curious onlookers who can make money from a sly photo.

Have you seen the polls? They are not wanted here.

When they returned I just groaned because - as has come to pass - the media is now dominated by these two wastes of space. I honestly never thought they’d come crawling back - it’s still baffling.

I wish they’d go back to the States and take their ridiculous pantomime with them.

No performative work done to justify huge public investment is a closed shop for the Windsors. "How naice" , and "did you come far" are protected trademarks and not for unauthorised use. The problem is that's Harry education right there but standing two paces behind his elder brother for eternity.

Yeah the introduction thing is a bit embarrassing. I’m not sure on the name thing. It wouldn’t bother me but I guess lots of people might be upset if people kept referring to them by their maiden name?

They might go too universities where famous-adjacent people are not uncommon. My son was at Cambridge and said no-one batted an eyelid at all kinds of people you now hear about or see in the press. Plus - isn’t there an agreement to lave the royal children alone till they finish their education?

Did randoms take photos of William at university or Harry at Sandhurst? I don’t remember that happening.

Service is universal. It belongs to the nurse in the public hospital, the teacher in the classroom, the civil servant keeping infrastructure running, and the volunteer at a local charity.

When Buckingham Palace released a statement confirming the Queen's view that stepping away from royal duties meant it was "not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service," it felt like a real insult a direct "fuck you" to anyone actually working in the public sector (which I do) or doing charity work.

To suggest that true service only counts if it is state-sanctioned or tied to a royal title completely misses the point. Anyone working to better their community is engaged in a profound act of public service, and they don't need a crown's permission to do it nor are they pushing a narrative.

It is easy to mock the monarchy but it is only by will of the people that it can be dispensed with. It is ridiculous in many ways and its wealth a scandal yet it has endured for a thousand years by continually reinventing itself.

In which culture do you curtsy to your partner’s granny?

She was the HoS. It was a Meghan thing to diminish her by calling her H’s granny.

I agree with you. But Meghan obviously embraced the parts of the culture that she felt elevated her above others. Suspect she’d not be so quick to mock a curtsey if she were on the receiving end.

Its a culturally acknowledged way of showing respect to a monarch in the UK. For quite a few years. Obviously MM didnt think it applied to her and she could laugh at people who did curtesy. One of the reasons some people don't like her here. She was mocking the way we show respect to our head of state. It just shows ignorance on her part. In the words of BLM, she should educate herself.

Sandhurst would be an uber controlled environment and in William's time - the Nokia 3310 was the most ubiquitous phone. So effectively no camera phones they were rare and expensive. The British press agree to no photos but the for the foreign media anything goes.

FancyKitten · 24/10/2026 15:50

I’ve commented on the HAM threads, so I won’t say much here. But, I think Harry & Meghan are trauma bonded in a lot of ways. Maybe this was swept under the carpet, who knows? There’s so much hurt on both sides (them & RF) but is shunning them the answer… It would be nice to see healing but so much has gone on. And also… The Markles.

And the Queen actually worked for the State her whole life because she held that title. Unlike the pointless (to the UK) Meghan Markle.

I’d like everyone involved to be happy, not just H and M.

I can’t see a reconciliation. H and M seem to thrive on chaos and drama. I know people like that. I don’t dislike them but they are not people I would choose to spend time with. That’s not how I want to live my life.

If they want to stay in the UK I think they should live a quiet life and focus on raising their children and finding something worthwhile and fulfilling to do with their time than does not look semi royal. Sadly I can’t see them coming to that conclusion. The need for drama is too strong. I also think they will change their minds about how to live their lives every few years And I think W and C have the measure of them.

I would like pps supporting a “reconciliation “ to explain what they think is in it for the RF to reconcile with the HaMs.

What, in the name of God, would they gain by hooking up with them again. After the HaMs record since their Freedom Flight, surely any sane institution would want clear blue water between itself and them.

Yes very true and if they are each other's rocks which suspect they maybe then they can withstand everything.

Are they that interested? I’d guess that at the type of university the royals will go to, the environment will be very closed, as it was at St Andrews.

Those are all paying jobs. The Queen was obviously specifically saying she wasn’t going to allow Harry and Meghan to merch out their royal status and still serve under her umbrella.

Do you think she didn’t know about the website and the trademarks?
