The royal family

Harry & Meghan - what does the future hold?

I’m not really sure whether I can articulate this very well, but I’ll give it my best shot.

I think I support a route for Harry and Meghan to find a route back into the fold of the royal family, and find that odd and conflicting given everything that has happened.

I found the Oprah interview, the freedom flight, the Spare revelations awful. It felt really unpleasant the way Meghan came into the royal family, was active for so little time and then criticised it all so publicly and in a way that seemed a bit of a cultural miss (I’m not referring to the racism allegations here). I think that her American mindset perhaps did not fully understand the tacit consent nature of the royal family and the constitutional delicacies with which the titles are held. This is why it makes commercialisation and speaking at round tables about ‘power’, jarring.

However, despite ALL of this this, I see two human beings. One man who has grown up, without any consent, in a strange institution, in the glare of the spotless, completely traumatised by the death of his mother in horrendous circumstances when he was a young boy. A veteran too. Although not comparable to this, Meghan clearly has also had a dysfunctional childhood too. These latest revelations around her father mean that from the outside, none of us really know what’s going on.

I would like them all to just be happy. I feel like collectively it would be awesome as a nation if we could give the family the framework to sort it all out by just saying ‘look, H&M, you did some crazy shit, it was hugely damaging and cruel. But we understand that you guys have gone through crap too. Let’s look forward- try and sort it out’.

I’d honestly like to be done with the drama and for everyone to just get on. Does anyone else feel like this? I know it doesn’t really work like this in practice, I’m just trying to get across how I’m feeling.

Please also try and be a bit kind in your responses. I think this is coming from a place where everything just feels really negative/heavy in life at the moment and the need for some positivity,

It's the "keep their mouths shut" bit that will be the problem.

Narcissists will agree to promise anything they're asked in order to get what they want. Once they've got what they want, the promise means nothing.

This is a core aspect of NPD behaviour - promises do not mean the same to them as to other folk. Promises are simply a mechanism for manipulating people into giving you what you want.

You do realise you don’t know them? Why are you trying to diagnose people you’ve never met with psychiatric disorders?

I think the RF are going to need to act sooner rather than later on this. It's just all so tawdry, and damaging. The headlines since H & M came back to the UK are just now over shadowing all the good efforts from the good work that the RF focus on doing. And it's only going to get worse as they get more desperate for money/attention.

I personally think that the titles will end up being retired rather than removed, and there will be a huge financial handshake that H & M just can't afford to say no to.

I disagree - I think time is a very important factor here, and it’s on the side of the working Royals and not the Sussexes.

Meghan and Harry have cast themselves as agents provocateur against the Royal family and its institutions, and various aspects of the UK since late 2019. They have had an unparalleled level of global attention and media coverage. “Tawdry and damaging” has been their hallmarks. And yet, 8 years later, Charles and Camilla are King and Queen and doing their jobs, William and Kate are Prince and Princess of Wales, and the institution rumbles on. Popularity ratings for Anne, William and Kate remain high. Meghan and Harry meantime have descended from their initial highs, left scene of their former triumphs and seem to be involved in a scattergun search for ongoing relevance.

Fast forward 10 years. William and Kate are very likely to be King and Queen. Their children will be 23, 21 and 18. Meghan will be in her mid 50s and Harry early 50s. Who knows what their children will be doing? I find it hard to see how the Sussexes will have much relevance at all at that stage - I think they have passed the apex and it’s pretty much all downhill from here.

Maybe because of their bizarre behaviour over a long time period?

I feel like this too OP. I was unexpectedly really happy to see them on their Nottingham walkabout, it reminded me of the old days and felt like a little morale boost for the country in these dark times (for those of us who like the Royals, of course not everyone does). Would love for everyone to forgive and forget and move forward but not sure it will happen.

I think that unless they can get themselves rehired as official working royals they will go back to the USA.

Because this is a chat forum and diagnosing people you've never met is chatting.

I agree but I think that will cause conflict between them. H obviously wants to be here and I imagine M is here under sufferance.

I was incredulous when they came back and I haven’t heard a convincing reason yet as to why they have. I mean - lots of plausible theories, but I’m still waiting to find out precisely what made M agree to come back to the UK. I can’t see how it could be related to this scandal - anyone else?

It’s quite clearly to get Archie into the right school.

are you a qualified and practising psychiatrist who has done a full assessment on either of these individuals? Thought not...

Just a normally perceptive and observant person, I should think. At least one of them is a textbook narcissist.

Latest Sun "exclusive" has just dropped. Awful if true, but it again answers the question of why the Met didn't act - they had no jurisdiction over an American living in Mexico going to the Far East.

Thanks.! I'm glad it isn't just me who can spot the obvious.

I wonder how people got by in the days before psychiatrists were on hand to help them recognise different personality disorders.

Of course not! , nobody is allowed to discuss the golden duo ! , even in the face of children suffering alleged sexual abuse…the focus must remain on Meghan, she is the victim here, the children are immaterial ….its poor Meghan all the way for some! ….yet we are the ones who should be ashamed! ….there is a name for people who prioritise the inane criticism of a rich celebrity over the actual suffering of children….

The RF managed to rehabilitate Charles and Camilla, after their affair, the embarassing tape, his biography and Diana’s death. People hated Camilla! I think if they can come back to the extent that Camilla was able to marry him and become Queen and gain some respect, that H&M can come back from this too. I don’t have any objection to them myself - I wouldn’t have aired all the dirty laundry like Harry has but I can understand why he felt the need to have his say. I’m sure given enough time that most people won’t care about all this.

Social media was a totally different animal back then, there is no rehabilitating Ham , they sold son many nasty, sleazy stories about the Royal Family .
Now Harry is a shadow of his former self & all he can talk about is grief or his grievances with his family while Meghan & her brother are in cahoots together with the Sun
Harry & Meghan are just too common & low brow for the royal family now, they have dragged themselves into the gutter & there is no way out.

I’m afraid too that Meghan will use this horrible news to re-activate her victim pose. I know that would be in appalling taste but it seems to be already happening amongst her crazier fans.

If she does try this stunt it will truly be a new low for her, and that’s saying something!

Remember: there is ONLY Meghan. No one else’s suffering counts.

I would normally agree that the “diagnosis “ of psychological conditions on MN is unwise, but OMG…Meghan is a textbook, template narcissist. You could teach A level Psychology from her case alone. Many celebrities have these traits - it goes with the territory - but M is exceptional.

Also pathological liar. I watched a programme about this years ago, they form the idea in early childhood apparently that it is unsafe to tell the truth. So they even lie about things where there is no need to.

Yes, I can believe she is well and truly messed up. Left behind by her mother with a clearly unpleasant father, then left to herself on film-sets for long periods in childhood and adolescence - not the ideal environment for developing healthy relationships.

But such people are notoriously dangerous to others, as we've seen. They often harbour deep resentment and try to damage people they perceive as having had an easier/more wholesome upbringing.

OP, I am with you and would love to see M&H as official working royals and on good terms with the RF again.

I thought it a shame from the start that a 'half in/half out' could not be agreed and hoped (and thought) that they probably would return to the UK and royal life.

People make mistakes and famous people make mistakes in public. Forgiveness here is not our business; it's for the family to decide. I think there will be (possibly already has been) reconciliation and I believe H&M will have the HI/HO they desired.

Can you see some flying pigs out of your window too?

This has got people sharing some real treasures from Spare again on social media. I'd somehow missed the fact until now that when Meghan gave birth to Archie she asked Harry to bring a framed photograph of Diana to the hospital so she could be there with them for the birth, which he did. What on earth.

My DH's father died young. DH found it incredibly sad when our children were born that he couldn't share them with his dad. But if I'd have suggested we brought a framed photograph of FIL to the birth he'd never have taken me seriously. I don't any men in real life who would have much truck with Meghan's performative BS.
