I do wonder if KC, at the heart of this, is worried about Harry's MH. Perhaps he's trying to avert more problems for the sake of the children.

I would have thought the “ turnip toffs” would be more keen to keep in with the Wales family .

I suspect they can do both tbh. The couple mentioned are the ones who own Holkham Hall and they are old friends of the RF. The devil looks after his own.

This is funny by Shane Watson in the Times - what are Harry and Meghan up to?

Richard E Grant and The Traitors — are you as obsessed as the rest of us?

Well, I doubt they're friends of the RF now!
They certainly won't be popular with William, that's for sure!

I ( admittedly a bit grudgingly!) agree . I think Harry is of the opinion that his mere name is enough . His contribution is delivering speeches about his mother plus telling people what to do , then do the opposite himself.
I read that he is no longer with Better Up ?

Agree with this. She does try. He has stated that his job is, dook, prince of England and full time father. He's utterly useless and like his hideous uncle, believes a proper job is beneath him. Apparently H doesn't get up until midday anyway so a 9-5 graft wouldn't suit him

But surely that wouldn’t be enough for a judge?

No, you’d hope not! But somehow he persuaded a judge ‘earlier this year’ to permit him to proceed to full Judicial Review (which is reportedly scheduled for this week).

(‘He’ = AMW’s legal team.)

I guess it’s to do with the legality of the search, so it’s either a challenge to paperwork, or permissions, or whether the correct threshold was reached for issuing of the warrants? My money’s on some tangle with the permissions and the leases & ownerships.

ETA: Sorry! Wrong thread, I know. Will shut up and stop derailing now.

I struggle to keep up with this (wonderful) series of threads - the stuff re AMW can be tiresome but I think we're all guilty of the odd derail at times!

While I wouldn't be surprised if Harry stayed in bed all day, this is pure rumour. No one (outside his household) knows what time Harry gets up or what he spends his time doing.

No you are not correct about Prince Edward's son

James Wessex took Edward's subsidiary title Viscount Severn at birth - although he was entitled to be Prince James

Edward did not "stop being the Earl of Wessex" - Edward is still the Earl of Wessex - but it is a subsidiary title to Duke of Edinburgh so James uses it

I didn't have time to go into the full details of James' pre-Wessex title and I'm not sure about all of Edward's current titles but Edward is no longer formally referred to as the Earl of Wessex but the Duke of Edinburgh, so there are no two individuals who are concurrently referred to as the Earl of Wessex, but my overall point still stands - James is only reffered to with these titles because he is not referred to as Prince. Archie is Prince Archie (even if he did have to wait a bit for that). James and Archie are both the sons of a younger son of the Sovereign, so both have exactly the same status.

BunnyBunbunbun · 05/10/2026 09:47

The Earl of Dumbarton is H’s senior subsidiary title and can be used by the eldest son .
Also it was Scobie ( when he was HaM’’s mouthpiece) who announced their DC would not have titles .

So, Harry and Meghan never themselves said that they did not want their children to have titles.

William has several subsidiary titles that are not use by George or Louis.

However, that was confirmed because they never used his Earldom and he was announced as "Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor" - by them.
I doubt subsidiary titles would be useful to George because he goes by the primary title.

When Archie was born, before his name was announced, it was expected that his title would be the Earl of Dumbarton, Harry's secondary title.
At birth, he was not eligible to be prince, as he was not the grandson of the monarch, but was eligible to use his father's lesser title.

Reporting prior to name announcement:
<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200101070537/www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/may/06/meghan-duchess-of-sussex-gives-birth-to-boy" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://web.archive.org/web/20200101070537/www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/may/06/meghan-duchess-of-sussex-gives-birth-to-boy

The baby’s title is expected to be the Earl of Dumbarton – as the son of a duke, he is entitled to use one of Harry’s lesser titles as a courtesy title – and his surname is expected to be Mountbatten-Windsor. He will will one day inherit the title of the Duke of Sussex from his father.

When the name was announced, it was also announced that the Sussexes had decided that he would be known as Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, without the title.
Reporting after name announcement:
<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200411031416/www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/may/08/archie-harrison-mountbatten-windsor-whats-in-a-name-royal-baby" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://web.archive.org/web/20200411031416/www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/may/08/archie-harrison-mountbatten-windsor-whats-in-a-name-royal-baby

While there are courtesy titles they could have used, such as the Earl of Dumbarton, they have chosen not to do so for now, according to palace sources.

So, just stuff speculated on in the media, nothing official from the Palace or from Harry himself.

Moreover, Archie not being referred to as the Earl of Dumbarton (which wouldn't even be standard practice) still does not mean that his parents had refused titles for their children. There was never anything that indicated that they didn't want their children to have titles (most specifically, prince and princess). In fact, everything suggested that they wanted their children to have the highest titles available to them.

No, it was announced by the couple themselves, on their Instagram.

I agree with @BunnyBunbunbun above, in that I doubt Charles is paying for anything to do with the Sussexes other than maybe a trust fund for the children's education. I'd be very surprised if he's actually picking up their bills. Why should he?

We don't think he's paying their bills atm. But earlier in the thread we were discussing HAM's finances and whether the reason for their hasty return is due to the rather large legal bills H has coming his way following the loss of the ANL case and whether he's building up to going cap in hand to KCIII.

But they still have the expense of the Montecito house, in addition to whatever they're paying for their home in England. So returning isn't going to save them any money. Harry may have hoped to get his security bills paid by the taxpayer, but it doesn't seem like that's happening either. So unless they sell Montecito manor, I'm not sure how this move is saving them significant money.

I'm not sure why you keep insisting that it 'wouldn't be standard practice', when several posters have explained that it is, and it is so standard that it was expected before the child's name was announced.

At the time of Archie's birth, Earl of Dumbarton was the highest title available to him. His parents chose not to give him that one.
When Charles acceded, it was unclear initially what they would do. They then announced that Lilibet had been christened Princess Lilibet Diana in March 2023.

It's been covered now, but here are two more sources showing at that the time Archie was born, reporting was that his parents had not used a title for him by choice. BBC:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48201625

And the memorable Scobie tweet:

Where is the convention that says a grandson or great-grandson of a sovereign must take a subsidiary title of his father? Archie is an unusual case because his grandparent was not on the throne at the time of his birth so he was not entitled to the title of prince (and letters patent were not issued to make him a prince at birth, as they were for Charlotte and Louis), but I can't think of any other example aside from James where a grandson or great-grandson took a subsidiary title. And James only took the subsidiary title because he does not use the title prince.

Perhaps, if we're going to speculate, the reason Harry didn't want to follow James' example was because he suspected that if one of his susbidiary titles (he is also Baron Kilkeel in Northern Ireland) was used for Archie then he would be trapped in a James situation and never use the prince title.

Again, none of this indicates in any way that Harry and Meghan did not want their children to have titles. Everything indicates that they very much wanted their children to have the titles of prince and princess and HRH.

Returning here could save them $2-3 million per year if it prompts RAVEC to reinstate their taxpayer-funded security! Harry was getting nowhere with his six-year campaign to achieve this and several of us believe that the main motivation for their poorly planned and hasty return is to force this very issue and hopefully resolve it in their favour. Their living costs are estimated at upwards of $6 million per year, so their security bill forms a sizeable chunk of that.

As for the Montecito house, that's their home, at least for now and one that they appear to intend to spend a lot of time in outside of school term-time (or at least Meghan appears to intend that). Rumours from the Cotswolds are that HAM aren't house-hunting atm, either to rent or buy, so they're living for free in Ian Wace's guesthouse and not spending anything on housing. Again, rumours are that if they don't get their taxpayer-funded security reinstated they may well bugger off back to CA. If none of this is true, then why aren't they house-hunting if they're so committed to returning to the UK?

Right, George doesn't need subsidiary titles because he is a prince. James uses them because he doesn't use the title prince. Perhaps Harry didn't want Archie to get stuck in a James situation.

Again, none of this means Harry and Meghan had always planned to reject titles for their children.

Does James use them? The media uses them for him, but I bet at school and now at college he's just James Wessex. He'd have been ripped to shreds at Radley if he ponced about using his title, and he also doesn't look the type. Whatever that type looks like 😅

Yes, but as I said, it seems unlikely that that's going to happen.

"Rumours" from where though?

Ian Wace is not going to allow a family of 4 whom he barely knows to live long term on his property for free.

If they really wanted to save money, an obvious choice would be to move into a more modest property in California which would also cost a lot less to secure. Coming back to England seems rather a drastic move, especially as it's not at all clear how it's going to cut costs for them.

Ok. Well, clearly opinions vary! They chose not to have any title for him at birth, nor Lilibet.
The only time they used titles was when QEII died and they could use Prince and Princess. Which they did.
If you looked at the official royal website, prior to that, they were Master and Miss Mountbatten Windsor, not the Earl of Dumbarton and Lady Lilibet.
