There's nothing in this that says they rejected titles for Archie or any other children, though. Also, it's the Express, so I don't have any confidence it will report on anything accurately.

In any case, the Earl of Dumbarton is Harry, not Archie. Archie will only be the Earl of Dumbarton when Harry is dead. It's actually unusual for a grandson of the King or Queen to use these secondary titles of their father. William and Harry didn't use Charles' secondary titles. George and Louis don't use any of William's secondary titles. The reason James, Edward's son, is the Earl of Wessex (which he inherited from his father when his father stopped being the Earl of Wessex - there are not two concurrent Earls of Wessex) is because he doesn't use the title prince.

In any case, isn't the title Earl of Dumbarton only applicable in Scotland, just like in Scotland William is the Duke of Rothesay and not the Prince of Wales?

Just because the media deliberately created confusion around the title Earl of Dumbarton, doesn't mean Harry and Meghan deliberately rejected titles for their kids in a similar way to Princess Anne.

In the OW interview ( I use the term loosely) M said that she expected “ all the grandchildren “ to be treated equally and that Archie would be Prince . She also equated titles with security and made out that she was only bothered about a title so that he could receive security .

Yet Archie wasn't a grandchild when she did the OW interview

or did she mean Harry must be equal to William?

I think that’s exactly what she meant . Grandchildren as in KC’s DGC so the same as the Wales DGC .

The Earl of Dumbarton is H’s senior subsidiary title and can be used by the eldest son .
Also it was Scobie ( when he was HaM’’s mouthpiece) who announced their DC would not have titles .

No you are not correct about Prince Edward's son

James Wessex took Edward's subsidiary title Viscount Severn at birth - although he was entitled to be Prince James

Edward did not "stop being the Earl of Wessex" - Edward is still the Earl of Wessex - but it is a subsidiary title to Duke of Edinburgh so James uses it

But when she did the OW interview it was under QEII not KC - so Harry was the grandchild entitled to be a prince - great grandchildren were not unless children of the direct heir.

Just because the media deliberately created confusion around the title Earl of Dumbarton, doesn't mean Harry and Meghan deliberately rejected titles for their kids in a similar way to Princess Anne.

When Archie was born, before his name was announced, it was expected that his title would be the Earl of Dumbarton, Harry's secondary title.
At birth, he was not eligible to be prince, as he was not the grandson of the monarch, but was eligible to use his father's lesser title.

Reporting prior to name announcement:
<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200101070537/www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/may/06/meghan-duchess-of-sussex-gives-birth-to-boy" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://web.archive.org/web/20200101070537/www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/may/06/meghan-duchess-of-sussex-gives-birth-to-boy

The baby’s title is expected to be the Earl of Dumbarton – as the son of a duke, he is entitled to use one of Harry’s lesser titles as a courtesy title – and his surname is expected to be Mountbatten-Windsor. He will will one day inherit the title of the Duke of Sussex from his father.

When the name was announced, it was also announced that the Sussexes had decided that he would be known as Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, without the title.
Reporting after name announcement:
<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200411031416/www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/may/08/archie-harrison-mountbatten-windsor-whats-in-a-name-royal-baby" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://web.archive.org/web/20200411031416/www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/may/08/archie-harrison-mountbatten-windsor-whats-in-a-name-royal-baby

While there are courtesy titles they could have used, such as the Earl of Dumbarton, they have chosen not to do so for now, according to palace sources.

I agree however HaM’s big gripe is that A and L were not treated the same as G, C and L. Meghan herself said that the RF broke with protocol refusing Archie a title .
Clearly she had misunderstood/ was shitstirring .

I reckon me and Markles could go head to head on royal protocol and come out even stevens.

I think she thinks "royal protocol"= I want what she (PoW) has

William still holds the title of Rothesay outside Scotland; it is just that within Scotland the Duke of Rothesay title is the most senior title and is therefore used.

Interestingly, he inherited the titles of Cornwall and Rothesay automatically on his father's accession to the throne; he was then granted the title of Prince of Wales by the King the following day.

I had one , like a monkey. His name was Jacko but he was never the same after my mum washed him and pegged him out on the line to dry😩

I had Jacko too! We must be the same vintage. He had bendy hands so you could make his fingers grip things. I used to hang my Jacko by the fingertips on to the washing line and lower and raise it to give him a ride. 😂

I think there will be uproar if he allows them to live on a royal estate like Windsor again. I know Andrew is on a royal estate but he was already in Royal Lodge before his exile to Sandringham.

I think if KC is going to help with living expenses he will have to either pay the rent on a place or buy them a house in KC’s name like he did for Angela Kelly.

Edited

Windsor must be ruled out because of proximity to the Waleses. It's bad enough for William that Harry is in the Cotswolds. He doesn't want to be bumping into him when he's scootering up the Long Walk. Anyway, private citizens don't get to live in Royal residences. Adelaide Cottage might be available though...

My2cents1975 · 04/10/2026 23:52

Most people only read headlines (marketing research puts it at 70 to 80%) so a thread headline that attacks William and Catherine is doing the character assassination job as up to 8 in 10 people will only read the thread headline.

Furthermore, if people are exposed to a stream of negativity about a person, they are more likely to believe further negative information. The technical term is "negativity bias in impression formation and negativity bias in judgments of truth."

Taking a look at various anti-Wales posts that are basically US negative political campaign marketing tactics makes me wonder if the hit and run posters are real or are PR plants by the usual suspects.

Either way, I would hope MN is more diligent about deleting troll threads thereby avoiding being used in what, IMHO, seems to be a rather obvious smear campaign targeting the Wales family and Catherine in particular.

It's been covered now, but here are two more sources showing at that the time Archie was born, reporting was that his parents had not used a title for him by choice. BBC:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48201625

And the memorable Scobie tweet:

Royal family

Royal baby: Duke and Duchess of Sussex name son Archie

Introducing her baby boy earlier, the Duchess of Sussex described him as "really calm" and "the dream".

Harry is probably miffed that William has more titles - just like sausagegate again

IIRC William currently holds - 2 princely titles, 3 Dukedoms, 4 Earldoms (Lord of the Isles is equal to an earldom) and 2 Baronecies
Prince of Wales
Prince and Great Steward of Scotland
Duke of Cornwall,
Duke of Cambridge
Duke of Rothesay
Lord of the Isles
Earl of Chester
Earl of Carrick,
Earl of Strathearn
Baron Carrickfergus
Baron of Renfrew,

Well they wouldn't delete the vile threads at the time of the 'Where's Kate?' smears, just before her illness was announced, so I wouldn't hold out too much hope.
