I definitely got the short end of the stick! (Also mid 60s and also crammed into the box room).

My brothers, who got a huge room EACH - we 6ft 1 and 6ft 2, whereas I am a whole 12 inches shorter at 5ft 1!

Even my mum who grew up in wartime Britain was 5ft 5½!

Oh my gosh! This is the reason I'm about 5'1 and my brother is around 6'!

I had the box room, too. He had a bedroom big enough to fit a kitchen table in, along with his bed, toys etc. AND a fold-out bed for me at Christmas.

My room was so small my toys were on the landing and I couldn't even have a door because it wouldn't have enough space to open with my bed in there!

Oh we clearly need an outlet for our unresolved trauma, how badly so many of us were treated in our families. It's a wonder any of us are fully functioning adults.

This is really outing but my sister is quite a bit older than me and I was besotted with her and hung on her every word. She spent years telling me that they put the flags out in our town for her birthday because she was special. They didn't put them out for mine as I wasn't special!

Took me years to realise it was Carnival week! 🤣. I feel a book coming on...

I was thinking earlier on this thread, that it's a common thing on Mn for people to declare a sibling the "golden child" and themself often the "scapegoat". I always take it with a handful of salt because people do like to see that in themselves.
I don't believe there are so many people for whom this is a general thing - at times maybe but not all the time, which then makes them not have those roles.
I'm slightly tainted by both my siblings, when younger, did go through a time when they were claiming these things. But they were blowing out of proportion something that really didn't happen in the way they said (eg one of them said how mean df was because he did all this woodwork and would never show anyone how to do it. I know that he loved showing people - I'd often sit in his workshop and he'd show me how to do it, and he offered to show them so many times, but they always refused)

So it's not totally surprising that you do see this playing out in public. Can you imagine the AIBU that M would write?

"I'm married to a darling man who's traumatised because his mum died when he was very young, and no one ever tried to help him, and his dad just treated him coldly - even on the day of the funeral. His brother's always been treated as the golden child. He gets everything and their dad has handed over a beautiful house for him to live in and some of the rental properties the family owns and taken him on in the family business. Even his children now see their grandad often, and it's rubbed in by seeing photos in the national press of them together, which really upsets dh.
We were only given this dingy little place when we got married, and so dh told his father where he could stick the family business. Dh is so upset when he sees them, and says he's been scapegoated and pushed aside; we've been low contact because of that for six years now. He now wants to work for the business again, but his father says no. AIBU to say that his family should apologise to him before they're allowed to see our children."

And there would be a certain number of gullible mnters who would just see the words "golden child" and tell them they're doing totally the right thing, and they're far better than the other people and calling the brother and father names.... familiar, eh?

I hate dolls too! , in fact I find the baby doll ones frightening!
but yes unfortunately that was life then and my parents were not particularly sexist at all! , it was the unspoken rule 🤷‍♀️
when I got older it was less unfair luckily, however my brother always had more freedom.

Dolls are scary. So are clowns. I was very happy with bears, who, unlike dolls, didn't stab you in the back if you rolled over one in bed. My brother had a golliwog. I cringe now to think of it but at the time, didn't understand it was a disrespectful representation of a black person, probably because I had never seen a black person.

An uncle gave me a vacuum cleaner for Christmas when I was six. I was so thrilled with it, especially with the two little lights on its front.

We didn't have the chutzpah of Meghan to write letters and didn't the gender stereotypes.

When he was born my DB was given a soft toy, a bit like a teddy bear, but it had a plastic face fixed to the fur. It was the scariest toy I've ever seen but, strangely, DB was attached to it during his toddler years and our DP's referred to it as 'eskimo dolly'. Quite bizarre!

I'd forgotten about those. I too was scared by them.

AlexandraCarrington · 04/10/2026 17:54

I've still got my favourite childhood doll. The others were given away to younger cousins, I think.

Anyone who's got a sibling or siblings can probably dredge up instances of apparent favouritism or unfairness from their childhood. Most people don't let their childhood grievances dominate their adult lives.

Weren't H&M offered a country house as a wedding present from the Queen, and turned it down?

Was the country house going spare? (Sorry...)

If M could see cars from any of the windows it was obviously unacceptable

Seasidewalker · 04/10/2026 18:09

That's the thing isn't it? Many of us could look back at many scenarios and twist them to demonstrate that we were deliberately treated badly. In the majority of cases they were simply parents trying to do their best and the times in which we lived (i.e dolls, stereotypical etc. ). But as robust adults we don't carry those things with us and we recognise the reality and my sister and I laugh a lot about the issues (note she was the golden child! 🤣)

It's also really easy for a newcomer to the situation to make incorrect assumptions as per the spoof Meg post.

I know a situation where a family had a much longed for and loved late child after a number of issues. That child now has a partner who asked me if X had been a mistake and they were filing X's head with that. It couldn't be further from the truth but the new partner set off down a path with it so you can see how these things occur.

I had one , like a monkey. His name was Jacko but he was never the same after my mum washed him and pegged him out on the line to dry😩

Well, I think they were given Frogmore Cottage by the Queen as a wedding present - not given, but given the use of for life - except they only stayed for 18 months and Charles ended up taking it back. I suspect if they'd hung around and served the crown as working royals for longer than five mins a country house would've followed.

JuniperJumper · 04/10/2026 18:30

I love following what the European Royal Families are up to and have just stumbled across a website called https://ufonomore.com/meghan

UFO in this context stands for 'Unidentified Fashion Object' so the website contains details of the female royals fashion choices

What has shocked me is how many pairs of shoes M has . . . .

Meghan — UFO No More

That rings a bell. Meghan wanted to live in Windsor Castle and the Queen said no. Nottingham Cottage was too small. Frogmore Cottage was accepted grudgingly (I am Princess Henry of England. Staff accommodation will not do!). I bet M wanted all of Windsor Castle, not just a suite of rooms.

For two such privileged people to think they can barter over gifts is so tacky. It's like someone giving me a Louis Vuitton suitcase and me saying 'Louis Vuitton? I want a Hèrmes suitcase,' instead of 'What a thoughtful gift. Thank-you.'

But M could see a small car park from the windows of Frogmore Cottage and wanted it moved . . .

She also upset one of the gardeners which caused HMTQ to visit with some advice about the correct way to speak to staff

CluelessAmerican · 04/10/2026 18:39

Page Six finally posted HAM at the pub today with the photos being credited to Goffphotos. When the Sun published them Friday the photos were "uncredited".

I thought I was mistaken and checked the site where I had originally saw it and sure enough I was not mistaken.

Anyone, no anything about Goffphotos?

Very strange.

TIA

She sounds like an absolute guttersnipe with no notion of how to behave decently anywhere, let alone a royal household.

Apparently they thought Frogmore meant Frogmore House !

Question from the Scientology thread;
Anyone here believe that royalty is appointed by the Will of God?

I don't think M thought through her wish for Windsor Castle....I think 1.5m visitors per year, give or take?!

I wish they'd been put on the social housing register instead. Band E, voluntarily homeless, 5 year wait.

They spent £2.4m doing up Frog before megxit

There's another one on the royal board which is very stressful. I'll just hide out here.

HaM had a place in the Cotswolds prior to Megxit called Westfield Large.
