I’ve always thought that the reason M struggled with fashion is because she’s short. She’s also apple shaped, so hasn’t a good waist, despite having very thin legs, so the draping she aspires to with her expensive clothing doesn’t work. There must be experts who would be able to advise her, as I’m sure there’s some shapes she would look great in. I think her neutral wide trouser and sleeveless top at some event looked super.

Since I’m breaking my lurking, also want to add my pennies worth on the white van paparazzi men- the way mumsneters talk about that area it sounds like there’s loads of famous kids/ people about in schools- is there any evidence the photographers (understood confirmed occupation) were looking for hamlet pics at all?

Meghan says she loves fashion, but in reality only wants to be able to show off associations with high calibre brands like Dior. (Or not, given that fashion houses aren’t daft). As with so many other things, she hasn’t done any homework. She hasn’t ever bothered to study clothes and design and understand how to dress. I actually find it frustrating that an attractive woman with resources most of us can only dream of, makes such a horlicks of picking an outfit.

Short people - and I am one - have mostly worked out that contrasting footwear, such as white plimsolls with black jeans makes you look shorter. It doesn’t help that she picks tall women such as Diana as her muses when her body is different.

Ironically, I suspect Camilla is far less bothered about clothes, and happiest when dressed for riding and dog walking, but she has done the work to know what is required when on duty.

Not a fashion expert, but simple lines seem to suit her best. There was a yellow day dress she wore as a working royal that I liked, and a red evening dress (not the Carolina Herrera horror).

Red dress doesn't want to download for some reason, but you can see it here: https://www.marieclaire.com/fashion/a31269848/meghan-markle-red-cape-dress-mountbatten-festival-of-music/

...but, but.. she was never allowed to wear colours when a working royal? Wasn't she forced to wear beige?

BasiliskStare · 04/10/2026 12:29

Ha ha @bluegreygreen and @MrsFinkelstein - only knowing you from MN posts I can't think of two people less likely to be banned or blocked (well two amongst others to be fair). But it's her twix and she can take the jumpers for goalposts home if she wants to .
Anyway I hope you have both reflected very seriously on your behaviour whilst sitting on the Naughty Step - and just laughed 💐

AlexandraCarrington · 04/10/2026 12:30

She wore more colours as a working royal than she ever has done since, I think!

It's not just that she doesn't choose styles that suit her, she doesn't show the clothes she does wear to their best advantage. They so often don't fit well and they're creased. Not how a big fashion name wants their clothes to be photographed.

I think William is 6' 1" and Harry a bit smaller? Still tall, though. Meghan usually wears those really high stilettos.

William is 6' 3"

Harry's height has varied over the years 😉Some sites put him at 6' 2" - which I think is incorrect. William is clearly much taller even if you could from the top of Harry's (previously) bouffant hair.

It's also hard to tell as after he met Meghan - Harry started wearing those "lift" shoes with the high heels to make him appear taller. You can see the difference between their appearances at Pippa's (2017) and C&C's (2005) weddings where William is clearly much taller and the unveiling of the Diana memorial in 2021 where Harry has suddenly "grown"

Harry probably resents the fact that it is another instance where William "got more"

Although Camilla frequently looks very stylish and lovely, I think those plain zip-fronted dresses that she has in several colours looked awful. Perhaps not in the stills I can find, but in videos.
Then again I could say the same of some of Catherine's dresses a few years ago. I think they were just barely knee length and a-line. Presumably someone thought they were nice though.
Sorry, nothing particular to say about H&M in this one. I promise I will next time.

Camilla is 79, and she has joint problems. I really think, for her circumstances, she often looks really stylish.
She's not 30, 5' 10" and a size 8.

I think you're both right @cheezncrackers & @MrsDanversGlidesAgain . None of the other possibilities seem to make much sense other than financially things must be starting to crumble. But they must have top financial advisors who will have suggested sensible ways of generating more income and growing their capital. It feels almost unbelievable that they could have got to this point.

They may have, but I get the impression that they don't actually listen to advice, or at least advice they don't want to hear and/or that doesn't support what they want to do.

There were rumours on social media that Harry wore lifts in his shoes when required to stand next to William 😂

People online tracked down the ugly light brown "elevator" shoes he wore the the Diana statue unveiling that made him taller

Sometimes he just goes for high heels

I can report that the food is indeed very good. And that our outing was not staged. Nor were our family photographs taken inside said pub, except for the family WhatsApp group. Even more pissed off that we are not going this year, so I could be in situ to report back.

Yes, I literally said "Camilla frequently looks very stylish and lovely", not even "for her circumstances", but actually very stylish and lovely.
And yes I know she's not 30 or size 8, we all do. What's your point and how is it related to what I wrote?

Handbagsandoldcurtains · 04/10/2026 12:54

Absolutely a fool. That someone of around six foot feels the need to wear raised shoes around his slightly taller older brother is ridiculous. But the psychology is fascinating.

Blimey, calm down! 😂
I'm just reacting to what appeared to be a criticism of her clothing style. You said her dress style looked "awful". However, your sharp response would indicate that you don't criticise her dress sense completely.
My point is that I think it's much, much harder for older women in the public eye.

Whoopiedooo · 04/10/2026 12:58

So is the consensus that M looking so much smaller is because H is wearing high shoes? Or just that she isn't? Or..?
I have thought that several of her photos looked manipulated, but it would be a strange look to aim for.

twosmallaxolotls · 04/10/2026 12:58

Considering Meghan's clothing budget etc I think she's managed to look awful on too many occasions.

It's ALL 'I need to be on the same level and equal to W,' isn't it?

And brown shoes with a blue suit? 😡

Camilla does dress well, and looks comfortable as well. I do think she needs a visit to Rigby and Peller though. Her real strength is hats. Even the hugest somehow don't swallow her.

It wouldn’t surprise me if she left the DC here as well saw them school holidays etc - they are more valuable to her as English sounding RF adjacent Prince and Princess than So Cal fake Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Mothers leaving their children behind is unthinkable to most on Mumsnet, but not so uncommon in other cultures. I work with a lot of Filipinos and it's not at all uncommon for them to seek work overseas whilst leaving their children at home with the Grandparents or an aunt. I also work with someone from Zimbabwe who sent her children abroad to different destinations ahead of her getting visas. One ended up in Canada, another in Australia. I don't think they have all lived together as a family since the children were very small. (She was widowed and took desperate measures). Plenty of children are sent overseas to British boarding schools, and stay over in the holidays, there are companies that organise host families to take them in. As of course happened back in the days of the empire.

Meghan herself has the example of her own mother. In reality, just getting them over to California for the holidays, or half the holidays isn't much different to lots of other divorcees with children in boarding school. Or indeed the situation of W&H when Diana was still alive and separated from Charles.

So I think she will have no problem at all in scooting back to California without the children. She probably won't recognise the reason, but it may actually be a good tactic in terms of the children getting to be included within some Royal private social occasions, much more likely to happen if she's not around.

The problem is that Harry has been very outspoken about the "generational pain" of his upbringing - being sent off to boarding school at 8, not fitting in at Eton....

It seems odd that having "found freedom" he is keen to recreate elements of the upbringing for his own kids

If H has started highering himself since meeting Meghan, does that mean he is doing so on her instruction? Perhaps she has a fetishish for stacked shoes and makes him prance around naked in them at home, or wear them when he's one of her boys 'running in from the yard for my bacon'. Apologies to anyone about to eat lunch.
