The royal family

PR and the Palace; are the mists clearing?

For those of us interested in the PR aspects of how the institution of the monarchy presents itself to us, the unsuspecting public, and given that Charles Spencer’s book has prompted a re-examination of events which took place over twenty-nine years ago, I thought this might be a good time to examine what Andrew Lownie calls;

“that gap between the curated narrative and the reality”.

We now know lots of things that weren’t obvious thirty years ago, for example;

We know that BP sometimes issues statements that question the credibility of the “accuser” rather than addressing an accusation directly.

We know that the relationship between the press and the palace is largely self serving on both sides.

We know that the royal rota tow the line in exchange for access.

We know that certain tabloids favour certain royals eg Fergie and The Sun.

We know that BP leaks and briefs certain stories to deflect from other more damaging ones.

We know that BP uses “safe” public figures to broadcast their spin for them eg it used to be Nicolas Soames but now appears to be Rory Stewart.

We know that many things presented to us in one way are in reality very different, eg the late Queen Elizabeth’s marriage, AMW being “banished” to Sandringham.

Given all of the above, do you think the Palace are losing the PR battle, simply because people are now much more switched on about ‘spin’ and because they favour a much more authentic approach?

@ukisgaslit "And for those hiding behind the sofa terrified that this forum is harbouring reds under the bed ( ridiculous) who are bringing down the uk by talking about what a ball of anger William is . Google it"

And the moon is made of green cheese. I googled it so it must be true.

Personally I don’t care if Harry is in or out as I am not a fan of the monarchy, the finances are way to shady for this day & age & Andrew was the final nail in the coffin.

How come she still got bad press?

You are talking about 25 years ago when she got bad press.

Yes, so...if Charles was powerful and she was bezzies with jumper man and Piers Morgan...how come?.

We are asked for ‘links!’

Theyll find their links

And ‘they’ll’ likely find pish too.

How on earth can anyone be sure what is on the level and what is not?

Agreed.
Speak for yourself OP. Nobody crowned you Queen.

Did people not actually read the OP? 😆😆

I think there have been some very damning journalistic investigations in the years since E2 died and while I suspect at least some of may have been held back due to misguided deference to the length of her reign I think the gloves are off now.

I think Palace PR (presumably we're the mugs paying for it to be rolled up in generic 'staff costs' to the SG) is very often on the back foot when damaging stories emerge and that can be reflected in rather rushed and reactive puff.

The revelation the Duchies are skimming the public purse and W's haste to waive a few tokenistic costs is a particularly egregious example.

Charles was not the monarch 25 years ago.
Camilla became friends with piers Morgan about two decades ago.
Camilla and gyles have been friends since they were teenagers. At the time of camillas bad press he was an MP. He had worked in journalism before that for womens magazines. He was editor of the Sunday telegraph review during the time of camillas bad press covering art and culture.
Since 2005 gyles has openly defended Camilla in a book, articles and many press appearances.

Right. An MP who sided with her...and wrote a book?.
So Charles wasn't powerful, but Gyles Brandreth was?

I find Camilla's friendship with Scott Bessent very odd. It has been prominent for decades and he helped rehabilitate her image in the uk. He is US secretary of state and a massive trump spokesperson and supporter and hearing him speak in support of Trump's worst decisions turns my stomach. He has regularly donated to Charles's charities

Of course no media reports on that heaven forbid

Marco Rubio is US Secretary of State.

Google it.

Scott Bessent. Camilla.
I follow a lot of US politics and I became aware a long time ago

I'm not sure why you get cross when people ask questions, it's a discussion thread and I asked a genuine question about your post because I was curious.
No matter

The queen was more powerful than Charles 25 years ago. It would have been her decision whether to lean on the press over Camilla.
And other journalists yes who Camilla has made friends with in the last 25 years. Piers Morgan being the most significant

simpsonthecat · 28/09/2026 21:34

I really am not making it up. They have had a friendship since the 1990s and he is very verbal about trump in support of his worst policies.
I did watch a recent oversight committee with him, it was not pleasant!

For various reasons I follow US politics as well as the UK and I have known about it for a long time. You are asking how I know and I have just explained why, that's all, no biggie.

I'm not cross which you like to think I am!

So, the RF aren't as powerful as a back bench MP who wrote a book and appears on Countdown?
Charles wasn't powerful as PoW?
Piers Morgan was a friend of Diana, they had lunch regularly and gave her very favourable coverage.
So, this explanation falls a little short.

bluegreygreen · 28/09/2026 21:37

To the contrary, it has been widely reported.

This article from the Times last year is probably one of the more recent and fullest reports, but there have been several over the years on both sides of the Atlantic.

Perhaps @simpsonthecat means the Queen forgot to ask her approval for her personal friendships?
