PR and the Palace; are the mists clearing?

For those of us interested in the PR aspects of how the institution of the monarchy presents itself to us, the unsuspecting public, and given that Charles Spencer’s book has prompted a re-examination of events which took place over twenty-nine years ago, I thought this might be a good time to examine what Andrew Lownie calls;

“that gap between the curated narrative and the reality”.

We now know lots of things that weren’t obvious thirty years ago, for example;

We know that BP sometimes issues statements that question the credibility of the “accuser” rather than addressing an accusation directly.

We know that the relationship between the press and the palace is largely self serving on both sides.

We know that the royal rota tow the line in exchange for access.

We know that certain tabloids favour certain royals eg Fergie and The Sun.

We know that BP leaks and briefs certain stories to deflect from other more damaging ones.

We know that BP uses “safe” public figures to broadcast their spin for them eg it used to be Nicolas Soames but now appears to be Rory Stewart.

We know that many things presented to us in one way are in reality very different, eg the late Queen Elizabeth’s marriage, AMW being “banished” to Sandringham.

Given all of the above, do you think the Palace are losing the PR battle, simply because people are now much more switched on about ‘spin’ and because they favour a much more authentic approach?

I really am not making it up. They have had a friendship since the 1990s and he is very verbal about trump in support of his worst policies.
I did watch a recent oversight committee with him, it was not pleasant!

For various reasons I follow US politics as well as the UK and I have known about it for a long time. You are asking how I know and I have just explained why, that's all, no biggie.

I'm not cross which you like to think I am!

I think you are because of your responses, both to this query and the issue of William - and your claim about his anger.
Look at your response when I asked a question!

I don’t know if Harry is back to become “royal” again but I don’t see why he can’t be rehabilitated in the eyes of the public the way Camilla was.

I think only 5% of Britons would agree with you.

Definitely no royal role though,

I think you may have misunderstood my question, I think most of us are aware that other countries are waging disinformation campaigns.

However I am questioning the idea that stories about Williams apparent temper are part of a disinformation campaign by a hostile powers. It seems incredibly tame tbh particularly when there is Andrew to work with

Edited

Andrew is politically and constitutionally irrelevant - William is the next head of state.

What do they want him for ?
To try to recapture the youth support

I wouldn’t dismiss the idea that there is a campaign to get Harry back
I wonder how royalists who have campaigned for literally years against Harry will
deal with his possible return.
( the short sighted ‘he’s no longer royal’ is entertaining to watch. What happened to the magic blood ?)

OMG - I cannot believe I’m reading this!

Why in the name of God would 42 year old Harry appeal to youth?

That made me spit my drink out!😂😂😂😂

Constantrunner · 28/09/2026 22:06

Harry is not coming back as a royal. He is married with kids, has made a lot of money, and is happily living his own life.

Harry is not coming back as a royal. He is married with kids, has made a lot of money, and is happily living his own life.

Yet he's always trying to insert himself as a working Royal. Odd ..

If you believe that, you’ll believe anything.

He’s back because he wants royal-adjacency for his children. He’d actually like them to BE royal and do the carriage rides and the balcony waves but unfortunately he didn’t think about that when he sold his family down the river for loadsamoney.

He cooked his own goose - can’t blame anyone else.

George is not being put out to work . What a ridiculous thing to say.
He occasionally accompanies his parents to events . That’s it .

Look at the desperate posts 😂

Now I've read a load of rubbish on here but Harry ? To appeal to the youth ? 😂 look how well that went down at school recently 😂😂🤷‍♀️

Andrew a nonce being protected by the royals is very relevant

God I hope not. Leave the poor boy alone. I have seen posts going on and on about how regal and good looking George is, all from sad royalists drooling over his Eton starting pic.. Leave him alone until he is 18.
Ditto his siblings
The pressure!!!!!

What ? Whip him out then ?

I was thinking about students and young adults up to late twenties I suppose?

It’s a good point that many of us weren’t terribly interested in, or enamoured of, the RF at that age. But I think we were more accepting of, unquestioning and deferential towards the institution? Whereas nowadays young adults tend to be a little more cynical and media savvy perhaps?

Edited

I don't think that's the case . Their minds have been desensitised by all the crap they watch.

No but I think some of the royalists comments are inappropriate. George is a child and some people seem to forget this.

That isn’t constitutionally relevant. He isn’t going to be be HoS - he’s been busted down to a private citizen. Everyone knows he’s disgraced - Russia and China have no use for him.

William, though, is a worthwhile target for them.

Constantrunner · 28/09/2026 22:59

@CoffeeCantata so we should only talk about constitutionally relevant matters?

And you are forgetting a Chinese spy targeted him because he had been exposed as a nonce and thought vulnerable to a spy. Andrew still has lots of important links and still regularly flies to the middle east to meet up with people there.

If anyone sees inappropriate comments about children surely the appropriate reaction is to report those comments to MN to be removed.

I am talking about things like hyper analysing a child's behaviour and claiming a whole personality based on that e.g. Louis is the cheeky one., or Charlotte is a second mother to louis. When in reality the behaviour of all three children have simply been age appropriate behaviour
