PR and the Palace; are the mists clearing?

For those of us interested in the PR aspects of how the institution of the monarchy presents itself to us, the unsuspecting public, and given that Charles Spencer’s book has prompted a re-examination of events which took place over twenty-nine years ago, I thought this might be a good time to examine what Andrew Lownie calls;

“that gap between the curated narrative and the reality”.

We now know lots of things that weren’t obvious thirty years ago, for example;

We know that BP sometimes issues statements that question the credibility of the “accuser” rather than addressing an accusation directly.

We know that the relationship between the press and the palace is largely self serving on both sides.

We know that the royal rota tow the line in exchange for access.

We know that certain tabloids favour certain royals eg Fergie and The Sun.

We know that BP leaks and briefs certain stories to deflect from other more damaging ones.

We know that BP uses “safe” public figures to broadcast their spin for them eg it used to be Nicolas Soames but now appears to be Rory Stewart.

We know that many things presented to us in one way are in reality very different, eg the late Queen Elizabeth’s marriage, AMW being “banished” to Sandringham.

Given all of the above, do you think the Palace are losing the PR battle, simply because people are now much more switched on about ‘spin’ and because they favour a much more authentic approach?

The level of scrutiny is not changing at all. What has changed is social media so people can share the details.

I was think about this sort of stuff
BBC:King becomes first monarch to reveal tax bill

BBC:How transparent are the royals being about money?

I think questions are being asked by media and that is causes some reponse.

There also been few books - Spare and swan song and one about Yorks - few interviews Andrews and Oprah in recent years - which have caused questions to be asked and headlines and more questions. Seems Gorden Brown - linked to by others on this thread- prompting questions to be asked about Andrew behavior with police and papers.

At one time Edward VIII media in UK were complict in hiding royal dirty washing - we still have way to go IMO but we have moved forward.

I really wasn't thinking social media but actual press asking more questions - causing MP and public to do the same.

Persistant social media questions/campaigns tend to have forces behind them anyway - groups, PR companies as while public opinion can blow up randomly obviously but any sustain thing tends to need some direction behind it to keep it going.

King Charles III during a ceremony to present the Grenadier Guards with their new Colours at Buckingham Palace in London. Picture date: Tuesday June 9, 2026.

How transparent are the royals being about money?

After the King reveals the tax he paid questions remain over how open the Royal Family is being about its wealth.

Seriously disingenuous. One of those things the poster apologised for getting it wrong.

How is that relevant to the point that not everything in print is true? Apologising for getting something factually wrong doesn’t make it factually correct.

Charles brought saville in as a marriage advisor because he was a close friend

Any sources for this statement? I can't imagine Diana giving JS the time of day, even less so if Charles insisted.

In other stuff you couldn't make up he also got him to write a PR handbook for the royals after MW's oafish remarks on Lockerbie :

It isn’t disingenuous to say that not everything you read is true and to provide examples.

It isn’t about this board or ‘a’ poster but across the board.

Not everything we read is true.

If it is? Then I look forward to discussing what I have seen written about both H&M.

I suspect some may not be keen to do that.

Well I think if we are talking about narratives we read that are not true; don’t a lot of them originate from Buckingham Palace?

Apparently the late QE2 and Prince Philip were a devoted couple when they spent a lot of time living apart, he was serially unfaithful, and then spent his latter days living at Wood Farm with Penny Knatchbull?

Apparently Charles was in love with his bride when he married v the reality of a mistress attending the wedding who most people now acknowledge, never stopped being his mistress?

Apparently the then Prince Andrew didn’t know Epstein, until he admitted he did, and never met Virginia Giuffre and the late Queen, the then Prince Charles, and Prince Philip didn’t pay her off to the tune of £12 million? Apparently he was just an innocent hands on father collecting his daughter from a pizza party while not sweating?

Apparently the then Prince Charles never asked his valet Michael Fawcett to take the fall on three occasions following enquiries in to instances of dodgy fund-raising?

Apparently the RF are keen that the police hold a full and transparent enquiry in to the activities of AMW while at the same time warning off former staff from talking through the use of legal letters?

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/11/12/uk/prince-charles-aide-michael-fawcett-intl-gbr

Now, the individuals of the RF are entitled to have whatever relationships they want with their mistresses or valets or their teddy bears for all I care, but please don’t at the same time, try and give the impression that their lives are somehow the essence of respectability and they are the bastions of the truth!

That’s interesting? My post is being looked at the second I posted it?

Can I ask please whether Mumsnet get to see what you are writing in draft form before posting? Does anyone know? I assumed not, but maybe I am wrong?

There may be some sort of trigger word in it.

It likely isn’t anything interesting/sinister.

Any sources for this statement? I can't imagine Diana giving JS the time of day, even less so if Charles insisted.

Apparently the claims were made by a journo whose documentary exposing Savile was pulled by the BBC but were then later backed up by royal spokesman Dickie Arbiter :

https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1592575/prince-charles-jimmy-savile-royal-family-news-princess-diana?int

As for Diana I can't decide.

Reports have her mostly revolted by Savile yet an intriguingly warm letter highlighting a future visit to Broadmoor surfaced and was subsequently auctioned

I think Diana was fine with saville at the beginning but grew over time to dislike him.

If it’s instant as soon as you press publish then it’s an automatic system trigger that’s responding to a keyword or phrase.

It’s probably in a queue waiting to be looked at by a human.

The letter from October 1995 that Cathy shared seems warm to me, or are you suggesting she changed her mind on Savile between then and her death?

Thank you very much Wordler

Intrigued now to know which words or phrases trigger this. 😃

I think what you tell your private secretary privately is different to what you write in official letters.

Yes I was suggesting that, but I think it was wrong. Diana said she found saville creepy and he licked her between 1988 and 1992.

Maybe she thought she was being polite in the letter? Saville was a close friend of her husband's

OH! I have just realised you might think I meant when a poster claimed that W+H were at school when Diana died. If you look you’ll see I was referring to Harry’s story of hearing about the QM’s death while at school. I admire your defence of that poster but it’s nothing to do with them, just examples to show that not everything seen in print is true.
