PR and the Palace; are the mists clearing?

For those of us interested in the PR aspects of how the institution of the monarchy presents itself to us, the unsuspecting public, and given that Charles Spencer’s book has prompted a re-examination of events which took place over twenty-nine years ago, I thought this might be a good time to examine what Andrew Lownie calls;

“that gap between the curated narrative and the reality”.

We now know lots of things that weren’t obvious thirty years ago, for example;

We know that BP sometimes issues statements that question the credibility of the “accuser” rather than addressing an accusation directly.

We know that the relationship between the press and the palace is largely self serving on both sides.

We know that the royal rota tow the line in exchange for access.

We know that certain tabloids favour certain royals eg Fergie and The Sun.

We know that BP leaks and briefs certain stories to deflect from other more damaging ones.

We know that BP uses “safe” public figures to broadcast their spin for them eg it used to be Nicolas Soames but now appears to be Rory Stewart.

We know that many things presented to us in one way are in reality very different, eg the late Queen Elizabeth’s marriage, AMW being “banished” to Sandringham.

Given all of the above, do you think the Palace are losing the PR battle, simply because people are now much more switched on about ‘spin’ and because they favour a much more authentic approach?

Yes, I do. It’s one amongst many, many SM campaigns by which they manipulate and subvert Western democracies. That one is relevant to this thread but they will obviously target industry and education institutions etc etc. The aim is to create distrust and uncertainty about all kinds of institutions, not just in Britain but across Europe.

I thought this was common knowledge. It’s what GCHQ etc are always on the watch for - disinformation campaigns by hostile powers.

I think you may have misunderstood my question, I think most of us are aware that other countries are waging disinformation campaigns.

However I am questioning the idea that stories about Williams apparent temper are part of a disinformation campaign by a hostile powers. It seems incredibly tame tbh particularly when there is Andrew to work with

Plus prior to Diana’s death our press were a lot harsher on the RF

@Theunamedcat I don’t think having a temper is that big a deal. Some people believe the RF are lizards 🤷🏻‍♀️

Previous posters ( sorry CBA searching ) mentioned that Parliament is sovereign etc etc - Charles is just a figurehead..
Yes for anything to do with population that is true . Because the Windsors DGAF about anyone but themselves .
But they ignore laws when it suits them and expect a first look at laws so they can exclude themselves .
That is not the act of a mere figurehead
( And no they do not ‘pay their taxes’ . They do not have pay many taxes that apply to the rest of us )

I saw RAVEC mentioned. I do not accept that the Windsors do not exert influence there. There is subcommittee dedicated to the Windsors . There is no vote - they ‘reach a consensus’ Reps from William and Charles are on this committee .
But in addition there was an incident a few years ago that I thought very revealing. The then home secretary ( I think it was Pritti Patel not sure ) had concerns about a RAVEC decision .
Did she write to RAVEC? No she wrote to Charles .

And for those hiding behind the sofa terrified that this forum is harbouring reds under the bed ( ridiculous) who are bringing down the uk by talking about what a ball of anger William is . Google it

There are frequent headlines describing William as ‘seething ‘ ‘ furious’ etc . This theme has followed him since childhood .
Alert the authorities !

You can Google all sorts of pish on the internet though.

It doesn’t mean to say it is true…

Theyll find their links

He’s family and very charismatic l. He was very popular.

Obviously, I don’t know fir sure but I strongly suspect it’ll happen.

I’m not entirely sure that answers the question as to what they want him for. If there’s nothing for him to do as a working royal, why would they want him back? As for his charisma, I think that is long gone

Ukisgaslit · 28/09/2026 19:13

What do they want him for ?
To try to recapture the youth support

I wouldn’t dismiss the idea that there is a campaign to get Harry back
I wonder how royalists who have campaigned for literally years against Harry will
deal with his possible return.
( the short sighted ‘he’s no longer royal’ is entertaining to watch. What happened to the magic blood ?)

Aren’t they more likely to capture the youth support via George, who is, you know, actually young? Why would anyone think a distinctly middle aged grumpy scruff would appeal to the “youth”?

Ukisgaslit · 28/09/2026 19:20

Yes George is being put to work shilling for the firm.
He looks uncomfortable and he’s a child .

It’s not about age it’s about personality I suppose .

George is not being put out to work . What a ridiculous thing to say.
He occasionally accompanies his parents to events . That’s it .

Harry is a middle aged man so why on earth would he be called upon to capture the youth support ?
KC has made it perfectly clear that he and M are not working royals and if you think that W will change that , you are dreaming.,

Youth support? Harry is middle aged and not exactly appealing to young people!

simpsonthecat · 28/09/2026 19:30

God I hope not. Leave the poor boy alone. I have seen posts going on and on about how regal and good looking George is, all from sad royalists drooling over his Eton starting pic.. Leave him alone until he is 18.
Ditto his siblings
The pressure!!!!!

You have no idea how RAVEC works. KC sits on it to share his diary and receive briefings.
It is a committee composed of Met officers, MI5, MI6 and counter terror intelligence experts. Not one of those people is going to allow someone, however royal, to challenge what their conclusion is.
They famously ignored a written request from the late Queen about security for the Sussexes.
Harry has absolutely no idea how RAVEC works. Don't believe his claims.

bannabead · 28/09/2026 19:33

I don’t know if Harry is back to become “royal” again but I don’t see why he can’t be rehabilitated in the eyes of the public the way Camilla was.

smilesy · 28/09/2026 19:34

Well Harry is stuffed on both counts then

Camilla kept her head down and quietly got on with charity work .
No books , TV series , interviews , complaints . that’s the difference between her and H .

Camilla is very protected by Charles. And has friends like piers Morgan and gyles brandworth who give her good press. If she wants to complain about the press, she only has to phone a friend.

wasn’t Camilla the most hated woman in Britain at one point in the 90s and I think it took nearly 20 years for things to fully change so on that timeframe Harry has time. Plus not everyone would class slagging off your family/being a brat quite as bad as adultery.

Charles hired a top priority form to get the public to think more favourably about Camilla. We know as they won an award for the pr campaign
