I'm currently reading The Hunting of The Falcon about Henry and Anne Boleyn and thinking that life at his court must have been hell on the nervous system - never knowing what mood the king was in, whether you were in or out of favour, watching friends and colleagues being ruthlessly dispatched and wondering if you'd die in your bed or violently - yet still putting up with it for the advancement and the perks and the fun.

No doubt about it, the Tudor monarchs were very maladjusted people, every one of them.

Maladjusted?!
I think the 16th century was a very different time! 😂

I think Robert Shaw’s portrayal of HVIII in A Man for all Seasons is brilliant for this reason - he shows him as a man of mercurial moods. When you read about him, you wonder how anyone could have considered him anything but a monster but Shaw gives him an attractive side too, which seems credible.

The over association of the Games with Harry is bad for the games. I agree. I don’t think it’s good for any kind of venture to centre around a particular individual if it’s to thrive in the long term. I think H is clinging on and putting himself front and centre because he has little else in his life and that’s selfish.

Absolutely, @JSMill and @BunnyBunbunbun. And with all these fascinating observations about the power of imagery and symbols to signify and promote a person’s stature and gravitas, I’m left yet again looking at Harry’s image and thinking ‘scruffy, ropey, seedy, desperate’.

He’s barely even a half-formed prince these days. All the written flannel in the world about his ‘founding of Invictus’ (ha ha) can’t hide the visual truth of his dishevelled ineptitude from the viewing public.

Definitely!

I remember when the BBC did a drama about Henry VIII and cast Ray Winstone as H. Sounds ridiculous, but it brought out exactly the crude, macho, 'I'm hard, me' message you describe!

Love Ray W and his acting vey much but we often laugh about his ‘cockney ‘accent as Henry V111 - Aeyan Aeyan I love you Aeyan 🤣 but then we are childish Northeners.

He was well read, funny, witty and charming. Unfortunately, after the accident and being unconscious for a while, he did become mercurial and a despot.

No doubt this will be discredited because Emmanuel's father is an Israeli. The detractors will latch onto the Zionism for sure.

He was a despot before - look at how ruthlessly he despatched Empson, Dudley and later Buckingham. Gareth Russell in his biography of Catherine Howard describes Henry as always capable of morally and legally questionable savagery, and sums him up as having gone rotten without ever being ripe.

After the accident he just became worse.

So is this the reason for the rapid megxodus from the US?

(As opposed to the original Megxit 1.0)

In my defence , September has had a lot of public service events - Food Bank and charity shop volunteer plus ferrying DGC around and helping elderly neighbour .
My October diary ( like Harry’s I assume) is lighter .

Would Markle have to have signed a pre nup?

Was it your birthday, though? I note that was the first on Harry's "engagement list".

If you didn't post it on your socials, or have the paps following you to get your best sympathy expression what was the point.

Wheresthebeach · 29/09/2026 09:59

I'm not sure we'll ever know the reasons for them leaving the US in quite such a hurry. It simply doesn't make any sort of sense unless they had really run out of money which I find hard to believe. Harry does look increasingly scruffy, I think he's trying to be 'relatable' and he just looks dishevelled. Markle continues to post on IG so she's not gone anywhere, although I agree she's a bit on the quiet side.

Invictus is his last chance to show some relevance. I just hope they refuse to pay his expenses, and that he gets replaced soon. He's no help whatsoever, and damaging the games.
