A new thread and book not even published till Tuesday. I checked on Amazon and its only 12th on the non fiction bestseller list. Doesn't show Earl Spencer in a very good light imho.

Oh, you are psychic? I hadn’t realised.

There's an awful lot of speculation and wishes masquerading as definite irrefutable facts on these threads lately.

So we should be stopping independent nations from making deals ? How exactly are we to do that ?

The UK is a country in decline . We haven’t been internationally important for a very long time .
If they wanted us to be doing the ‘exploiting’ again they could do so .

Make them better deals!

Or accept, that some time in the foreseeable future we will all be living under the Chinese system when "incorrect" behaviour gets you into big trouble. Oh, and if you're Muslim, be very afraid of that future.

I was thinking when the pp said 'the future is China's' that they might want to speak to the Tibetans and Uighurs and ask how they feel about that.

It's number 1 bestseller of all books on Amazon

Pretty much every new release gets to the top of one of the many categories of Amazon best seller lists at some point near its release. I’m not sure that makes it the success it may appear

Serenster · 23/09/2026 09:31

That doesn’t surprise me Kalanthe. The British royalty sells, and particularly salacious stories about them. Earl Spencer may say he wanted to tell his sister’s side of the story (although interestingly I note in many places he contradicts what she told us in her own words in her Andrew Morton tapes) I presume the likelihood of a global best seller also influenced his decision…

(When people post dismissively on this board “why do you care” I often wonder how they have missed that the UK royal family has been a global topic of huge interest for decades now.)

I’m not the only poster saying this.

It’s an accepted fact .

Nations are making deals with China - as is their right - while the commonwealth exists with Charles as head of it .

I'm not saying it's a great success, just pointing out that it's definitely not at the back of the non-fiction bestseller list

The two are unconnected.

Just watching top journo 'Lorriane' give him the floor. What a load of simping and fawning.
Unless she building up to some killer questions 🙄

I mention Charles because we are constantly told by Windsor fans that he has ‘influence’ and ‘soft power’ . I’d imagine the Commonwealth would be the show case for that …

Actually I think his visit to the US this year was a good showcase of that. There is a CHOGM meeting taking place in November this year, so let’s see how that goes?

It doesn't suit The Narrative, Mrs D.

But then, we know that!

Maybe in the Booker Prize list, though?

Depends on how many other factual errors can be established! 😂

Kirschcherries · 23/09/2026 09:55

I know threads get derailed but a discussion about China and the Commonwealth is huge and needs its own thread.

Sorry ! Had to double check which thread I was on! …..🙄

I have a picture in my head of gaslit and foxy, amongst the ruins of a post-apocalyptic Britain, jumping up and down because 'The RF's gone!"

I've met a lot of people like this in real life. It doesn't matter who suffers, or what is destroyed...as long as their hated target (the royals, the 'bourgeoisie', whatever) gets a poke in the eye.

People with historical perspective will get this analogy. Bertrand Russell said that Marxism failed because its motivation was "not so much to improve things for the proletariat as to punish the bourgeoisie".

Welcome Jeff, to this crazy thread! It does seem to have wandered somewhat because what really matters is that the RF is destroyed forthwith! 😂

It does - and it would be an interesting one, and make a change from Old Charlie Shiny-Veneers.

Some people are very prone to short term thinking and 'my enemy's enemy is my friend and will help me get rid of my enemy.'

Nope, not always, and not a reliable strategy either.

Three and a half star overall review...ouch!

Also I cannot stand Piers Morgan and still feel that his behaviour towards Meghan was outrageous and downright creepy at best, but I don't blame him for being royally (no pun intended) pissed off. His editorship tenure is such a quick and easy detail to check, and yet Spencer the supposedly great historian didn't bother.

Common sense would tell you that KC, being probably terminally ill, will be restricting his overseas visits to the biggest/most influential countries. W & C will most likely be sent to smaller countries. Most CW countries are not big players on the world scene (which is one reason why they appreciate being members - it gives them a place at the table they wouldn't otherwise have) and tend to be small, so at this stage of his life it's unlikely that KC would be making many visits to the individual nations.

The HoS can and do come to the UK though, if they wish.

Yes - if they wish. KC will not be sending the Gestapo to round them up. That's not his style.

Yes and I also don't believe he'd have been surly and unpleasant when Spencer told him not to attend the funeral, you wouldn't would you in such horrific circumstances and as PM said he knew there be every chance he was being recorded to use as ammunition against him.

In fact the lack of evidence for any of Spencer's claims is extraordinary for a 'historian' <or even a bad journalist>.
