Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

Earl Spencer’s a proven liar and troublemaker, publicly condemned by one of his numerous divorce judges.

One of his GFs saw what he was doing to his wife during the case and gave evidence on her side. Spencer dumped her.

The Spencer children won’t see him.

Trying to start a new war with lies is just sad, and does nothing but harm. But that’s Spencer.

Given how angry CS appeared to be in the aftermath of Diana’s death and his eulogy etc. I don’t believe for one minute he’s waited 30 years to deliver this particular bombshell,I just don’t believe it happened.

None of us know this man. He may have waited until the boys were grown adult men and settled in their adult life with marriage and kids.

Or it may be true, but the timing is because he needs the money.

persephoneee · 17/09/2026 12:18

Don't forget that Charles was POW and Royal, he was top dog in the proceedings even though divorced from D. So I reckon there was a battle of wills between Spencer and Charles, and Charles being hotheaded and arrogant would not give in, and was quite prepared to put Spencer in his box. I don't doubt that Charles said something along those lines to Spencer. He didn't give a hoot about Diana and was jealous of her huge popularity, all the while he was a dull, grey caricature of a Prince.

I'm writing a book too. 😊

I don't believe that is the sort of thing Charles would say to her brother.

Also knowing his sons were grieving their mother, its unlikey he would say this.

It was also very obvious she wouldn't been forgotten soon so just doesn't ring true. However it's clear the bad feeling between RF and Spencer family is likely to be a reason why Harry has also fallen out with the RF.

Both men, KC3 and Spencer should be seeking reconciliation for the younger generations sake. Previously the Queens grandchildren all seemed to get along but KC3 grandchildren are unlikely to know each other because of the feud.

Spencer didn't need to stir the pot. Nothing to be gained by it...only ££ for Spencer and click bait for news channels.

I agree with this. There is something....overblown and florid about him that makes me feel very uncomfortable. I suspect he is not entirely stable mentally maybe?

I am no fan of KC but I do not believe this conversation took place in the way it has been portrayed. Diana was used and abused dismally by the RF but she had faults too. I also do not believe the earl would have kept this gem quiet for all those years.

I do believe something very off colour was likely said though. Charles got to a point where he absolutely detested Diana. The press dubbed it, 'The war of the Wales's' and it went on for years and the bad feeling was likely worse than the press reported but even if Charles thought this, I doubt he would have 'shown his hand' to this degree, outside of like minded people and certainly not to her brother.

Why would anyone drag that up after 30 years.
William might be very settled.
Harry yo-yoing back and forward, no clear direction in life is anything but settled.

It has to be money - root of all evil

King Charles is a human in a gold fish bowl. I personally am almost fed up with the media, with the book writers and all the rest of it. It’s unconscionable to have all your life all on view. Imagine your one life put out there. He was under huge strain when Diana died so god knows what he said and frankly I don’t care. She was the mother of his children and she was the one who dragged their marriages into the press. Confusing times.

I feel utterly sorry for William as he has to pick up all these pieces and as things stand he has the opposite of support from Harry.

Hopefully William and King Charles stay close - thats the future. Harry should show loyalty to his dad and brother.

I thought that the Earl Spencer was a lovely man - he was kind to my son. I am not happy with this at all from him even if there is truth in this story. O think that time might have altered context and memories. So both stories could be true but different.

Heaven knows what I said when my parents died - I was consumed with grief.

Where do you get off posting such vile comments about a stranger? Are you really willing to be horrible about a stranger just to defend a royal who wouldn't know you from eve?

Earl spencer was told to be telling the truth when he won his court case against tabloids saying he refused Diana housing. That story is a lie.

Earl Spencer has also been open that his childhood sexual abuse had a very negative impact on his marriages.

Did he behave badly in his marriages? Sure. Most divorced people have, like Charles who behaved terribly.

But to write about someone as if they are the worst of the worst alive is just vile. I don't understand this level of nastiness.

I don't remember it being that short.
Most funerals in Scotland a week is normal.

It wasn't short. You are right. The funeral was on the 6th of September.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 17/09/2026 12:24

Surely, if this was said as now reported by CS, it would not have waited 30 years to come out? Unless CS has never in 30 years mentioned it to anyone else? His wives for example?

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 12:24

@Noras Charles is king. Of course he gets a lot of public attention and media attention as well as money.
But maybe for the sake of the royals we should just abolish the whole sorry mess?

HareBrewery · 17/09/2026 12:25

Suspect Spencer is doing this now because Charles is old man battling cancer. It won't make as much money when Charles is gone and William is King.

There would have been a lot more fury if he took a swipe at Charles after his death. It's all about making as much money as possible whilst the Harry saga rages on. It's pretty grubby really.

Vast country estates are expensive to run and he needs to sell a lot of books.

I'm not a supporter of Charles but in his shoes I would be absolutely fuming and I bet William is too.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 12:26

It was six days for an autopsy, her body to be flown back, and a grand public funeral. That is short.
And if someone Scottish dies in Paris and needs an autopsy, it will take far longer than this.

FancyKitten · 17/09/2026 12:29

I remember Earl Spencer’s first wife. Victoria. Has she ever written a book?

HollyhocksandPeons · 17/09/2026 12:30

I never thought I would feel sorry for the royal children (class antagonism, K.Marx). But I really do. Everything is arse over elbow for them, their crazy relatives on both sides, their crazy adulterous parents, who made their sordid sex lives public, the gold-digging spouses, for all of them. And now this.

An earlier poster said that Diana's mother was against the marriage, but my understanding is that when Diana had a few pre wedding wobbles, the mother and one of her sisters, both said that the tea towels had already been printed, so she had to go through with it!.
The idea of K Charles having to marry a virgin is really a relic from pre DNA days, to ensure that the King was actually the father of any children..
Also, I seem to remember that former P. Andrew was dating Koo Stark, who as an aspiring actress had made some rather dubious early films (soft porn style?), and this was spread all over the papers, and the relationship was effectively put a stop to. Which is rather a shame, as he may have been better off with KS and have had a very different future than the one he had.
So, the first reason (DNA) no longer applies, but the second reason is quite important. Sarah Ferguson had a 'past', but her former boyfriends did NOT release dubious pictures of her, etc.
So, I think this rule of marrying a virgin would probably not really apply in future.
I still feel that Charles S is muck raking in order to sell his book. He needs to finance his latest divorce after all.

Koo Stark never appeared in soft porn. She appeared in a film called ‘The Awakening of Emily’ in 1976 which was a mainstream coming of age movie and was labelled as erotic. Stark successfully sued The Guardian newspaper in 2022 for suggesting that it was pornographic and describing her as a porn star.

I can’t believe people are saying this didn’t happen. The king is well known for being petulant (remember the pen?) I agree that Earl Spencer is a bit of a knobber, but I believe that this happened.

I think a lot of people agree KC is a petulant knobber and a chip off the DoE block (but without the balls) but they find this a bit of a stretch too far on behalf of the earl.

Charles detested Diana by the time their divorce was finalised and for years after though so something was said I'm sure. I just can't see the earl sitting on this for all those years.

I suppose the thing to do is not buy the book. That way, there are no consequences either way.

I think Earl Spencer has a book to sell. It needs controversy for publication, who's going to buy a book saying things were strained but civil, it needs a bit of gossip for the masses.

Diana died on 31st August, there was an autopsy and her body had to be flown back from France. In those circumstances six days between death and funeral is extremely short, especially given the logistics involved.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 12:33

@milveycrohn it was Diana's sister who said it was too late for her to back out. Not her mother.

F63C · 17/09/2026 12:34

Summeriscumin · 17/09/2026 11:09

4 times married and 3 acrimonious divorces.

Didn't his sister ask if she could live in a house on the estate and he refused because the press would always be about?

Diana did ask to stay in one of the houses on the estate. It would have worked well for her too as it's all so huge, she would have had privacy but CS refused to allow it.

Ironic that he then 'stood up for her memory' later on and the influx of money from the visitors posthumously has kept the rain out of the place.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 12:35

Diana's mother did warn her against the marriage.

This is a lie. Earl Spencer won a court case against a tabloid who repeated this lie. And yet multiple people have posted it on this thread.v

Not really. There is a pre defined plan for the death of all the RF and public figures with all involved knowing well ahead of time what their role is. This would have started from that first phone call.

TeaAndTales · 17/09/2026 12:38

With regards to Prince Charles not wanting Diana’s coffin open for viewing. He had seen her body and knew that by the time the family got to Paris she’d been lying in a very hot room without air conditioning and only a small fan to keep the air moving. The windows were closed and she was already starting to deteriorate. On top of that she’d been in a car crash and had emergency heart surgery which probably took a huge toll on her body after they tried resuscitating her. She then had the journey back to the UK and underwent a PM before being dressed again for her burial. And do people really think her sisters wouldn’t have also had a say in their mum seeing her or not? It’s very easy to blame the then POW for there not being a viewing when the reality is by the time she got back to the Palace before her funeral she’d been through a lot.
