Earl Spencer's book on Diana is stolen

Warning - DM link ahead...
Copies of Earl Spencer's sensational book about Princess Diana have been stolen from a lorry – just before its exclusive serialisation in the Daily Mail.
The memoir – Swan Song: Diana, My Sister – includes revelations about Diana's deeply unhappy marriage with the then Prince of Wales.
It also describes the crisis that engulfed the Royal Family after her death in a car crash almost 30 years ago.
Last night a publishing insider said: 'Earl Spencer has kept his silence for nearly 30 years and what he has to say about the King's reaction when Diana died is utterly devastating.'
But, in an astonishing development, the Mail can reveal that a truck packed with thousands of copies of the book was broken into after it was parked overnight in a lay-by in the Netherlands earlier this week.
Just four copies, which had been wrapped in black plastic to hide their contents, were stolen in what publishing sources believe could have been an audacious plot to steal the highly anticipated book of the year before it hits the shelves.

Yes both William and harry said they were persuaded. Remember they were children, 12 and 15.

They said it was a collective decision. William said it was a balance of family and duty and it felt as though Diana was walking along with them. Harry said he was very glad he had done it.

Charles also obviously paid a lot of money for camillas clothes and advisers. In spite of misogynistic comments, she is usually extremely well dressed for a woman if her age and position.

Her position? You think she is extremely well dressed for a queen?

Yes I do.
If she was simply a rich person I would think her clothes are slightly boring, but lovely. But I would urge her to be more adventurous. But as queen she obviously tries to dress in a certain way.

Not at a later point they didn't.

I don’t understand how she can be extremely well dressed for a woman in her position. How would you expect a queen to dress?

Hope this doesn’t count as a derail.

There is an AMW thread here which some of us are on.
I hope this link works

I’ve said before and this will please republicans, that in 20/30 years, I don’t think we will have a monarchy, as long as it’s gradual and not the shitshow of Brexit I’m ok with that.

Now back to the discussion in hand.

She wears lovely elegant coat dresses instead of those unflattering Norman Hartnell outfits the old queen liked?

OneLilacHedgehog · 18/09/2026 15:40

Yes much nicer outfits than queen Elizabeth wore.

Persuaded isn’t quite the same as made.

It’s a fine line. Children are generally more accepting of adult authority and easier to manipulate than grown ups.
They may have thought that their father had their best interests at heart in asking them to do it, but in this they were deceived as I believe they were being used as a shield so that people would not boo Charles.

Wewinnow · 18/09/2026 17:19

TheCheekyLimeOrca · 18/09/2026 14:39

William and Harry were too young to decide whether they should walk behind the coffin. The question should never have been asked of them.

We all agree that now but most didn't criticise the decision at the time though. It is impossible to know whose idea it was or who put pressure where, especially after so long.

Regarding the book more generally, I think it is appalling he even wrote it. I am estranged from my sister and I'd be spinning in my grave if she tried to write a book about me after my death.

I was always amazed that people didn’t criticise the decision, personally.

RevelationsMayVary · 18/09/2026 14:23

I am that young man has benefited hugely from making a huge effort as the last thing he could do for his Dad. His ultimate performance just demonstrates his commitment, resilience and pain - I am sure he is proud that he did this as well as the adults being proud of him in the circumstances.

Everyone is proud of him.
The point of the story is that he was not mature enough to predict how overwhelming his emotions were likely to be on the day of his father’s funeral.

Wewinnow · 18/09/2026 17:31

smilesy · 18/09/2026 15:54

At what later point did they not say that?

They have both said various conflicting things at different times, but at one point William definitely said it was the hardest thing he had ever done but it was his duty. Harry once said no child should ever be asked to do such a thing.
Bottom line: it was cruel to put them through it.

DaisyDooley · 18/09/2026 17:35

Ukisgaslit · 18/09/2026 09:17

Jesus.

The next king and head of COE said
‘rest assured we will forget her soon enough’

about the death of mother of his children and you describe it as ‘speaking out of turn’ !

There is NO PROOF he said that. It’s one persons word against another.
We do have the evidence of our eyes though and many millions of people will remember seeing how utterly devastated Prince Charles was.
.He may have been part of footlights at Cambridge but there’s no way he’s that good an actor.

Harry is also on record as saying he was glad he had done it.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here. Parents make decisions with the best of intentions, sometimes our children think we made the right one and sometimes they don't. Harry, and probably William, seems to have changed his mind over the years as to whether it was best that he did the walk. That's normal as we process grief and gain different perspectives as we age. It was such a tense, febrile time with the press and public clamouring for a specific course of events it would be astounding if every decision made was correct.

I think William and Harry were probably groomed to believe that it was the right and proper thing for them to have done.
Then, when they grew up and gained more perspective, they questioned what they had been led to believe.

And there is absolutely no proof he didn’t .

The book is published . Charles made a statement about a book - unprecedented- yet did not deny saying it .

It is possible for Charles to be shocked then a matter of days later worked up about his own reputation .
We know he has a temper . He was certainly very concerned about himself and his own image during the funeral. Hence his angry phone call to Spencer who was resisting the boys walking ( to protect Charles from heckling ) and then Spencer reports what Charles said
I doubt he’d ever forget that .
Who would ?

Spencer’s eulogy made reference to Diana being remembered by everyone . That wasn’t remarkable at the time but certainly can now be seen as a response to Charles saying
’rest assured we will forget her soon’

bingobangs · 18/09/2026 18:36

I was thinking maybe Charles meant the people would forget. I do think the Royals were completely taken aback by the nations grief and the anger that was then directed at them.

bingobangs · 18/09/2026 18:41

Ukisgaslit · 18/09/2026 13:18

The thread was at that point discussing ‘character’ and being of ‘good character’ so I’d argue the Windsors connection to Epstein is totally relevant.

It is for everyone else but not the Royals for some reason.

MauveLibrary · 18/09/2026 18:44

This book is a tacky exploitative obscenity. Charles Spencer is clearly a bit short of money after his last divorce so decided to once again ruthlessly exploit his sisters memory in the same way that he did after she died by flogging tickets to the museum at Althorp.

He is pouring out 30 years of unsubstantiated bile about what happened and potentially defaming the King. The claims being made by Charles Spencer are just that..claims which are not supported by evidence.

Has Charles Spencer not stopped to think about the pain and distress he is causing to his nephew William with yet another vile tell all book. This poisonous book is just going to cause more hurt.

What did he think he was going to achieve by writing this thoroughly nasty book...apart from greedily raking in money.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 18/09/2026 18:45

saying “We will forget her” doesn’t make sense - of course her sons won’t forget her
saying the public will forget her makes more sense
who knows
big mistake though for the palace to counter this as CS is now doubling down

I remember at the time feeling very uncomfortable the boys were paraded out to look at the flowers after Diana died - I think the family didn’t have a clue what to do and forgot they were children

One other thought is the bitterness from Harry about his treatment in life could have been fed by his uncle not his wife - and this could have been going on for years

I would love to know why CS daughters are estranged from him ?

bingobangs · 18/09/2026 18:50

I think the Palace made a mistake responding

Ukisgaslit · 18/09/2026 18:54

The full quote was ( Spencer says Charles hissed this )
‘rest assured we will forget her soon enough ‘
Then Charles slammed the phone down .

I was rushing above and assumed we all knew the full quote

Yes it’s a strange , depraved thing to say.

I think the Palace made a mistake responding

They have a policy of never responding to books ( though they have had books banned ) and yes the response from the palace was dreadful
Snide , faux empathy , waffle .
But what the statement did NOT do was deny it .

Maybe Charles will come out and clearly deny it . And if not , why not ?

They certainly weren’t shy about calling Virginia Guiffre a liar - and they knew about Andrew and Epstein when they did so .

The book mentions Diana wanting a divorce ‘because my husband is in love with his valet’
I thought she was joking but there was a scandal about this suggestion- the palace denied it - about 20 years ago. And a disturbing case of male rape in the palace .
And tapes relating to this that Diana kept and which disappeared after her death.

Why now is what I am wondering . Maybe Spencer has been prompted by some recent events and hadn’t previously planned to write.
Maybe he’s a master of cold revenge . He can certainly play the long game .
