Earl Spencer's book on Diana is stolen

Warning - DM link ahead...
Copies of Earl Spencer's sensational book about Princess Diana have been stolen from a lorry – just before its exclusive serialisation in the Daily Mail.
The memoir – Swan Song: Diana, My Sister – includes revelations about Diana's deeply unhappy marriage with the then Prince of Wales.
It also describes the crisis that engulfed the Royal Family after her death in a car crash almost 30 years ago.
Last night a publishing insider said: 'Earl Spencer has kept his silence for nearly 30 years and what he has to say about the King's reaction when Diana died is utterly devastating.'
But, in an astonishing development, the Mail can reveal that a truck packed with thousands of copies of the book was broken into after it was parked overnight in a lay-by in the Netherlands earlier this week.
Just four copies, which had been wrapped in black plastic to hide their contents, were stolen in what publishing sources believe could have been an audacious plot to steal the highly anticipated book of the year before it hits the shelves.

Someone upthread mentioned the theft of 4 copies of Charles Spencer’s book
I think it’s odd too .

Another odd thing happened years ago when Diana was rumoured to be ‘writing’ her biography with Andrew Morton . The journalist’s office was broken into and searched. Nothing taken - if I remember correctly the journalist was extremely conscious of risk ( said he kept well back from the edge of the tube platform - not sure if that was a joke or not) and had hidden his notes well .

In any case the response from Charles was crass and totally counter productive.
Par for the course these days.
These people are supposed to be trained from birth heads of state .
They are very expensive gossip fodder and nothing else .

Yes it's very odd.
One copy for Charles? One for Camilla? One for William? And one for Catherine?

Jennie Bond is writing from an old fashioned journalistic perspective, from a time with 3 tv channels and daily newspapers being widely read. But in these days of 24 hour news and comment the public's attention span is short. Add in ocial media, Reddit, X, tiktok there will be opinions everywhere and each opinion lessens the impact of any news item unless most agree and in this case it doesn't appear that they do.

Bottom line, I just don't believe there is enough in this book to cause a war. A brief flurry of articles, a statement, yes but I expect it will all fizzle out far more quickly than the accusations in Spare did.

Yes. I don’t think there will be anything in there other than a few articles with clickbait headlines and then that’ll be it.

Don’t a lot of books on the RF say they are going to ‘blow the doors off’ the monarchy and then fail to deliver, and within the month it’s in the reduced bin or charity shop.

It’s one persons recollections from 30 years ago not 3 years ago.

It depends what else the book contains I would say before anyone can reach that conclusion, but I understand the motivations of posters who are keen to dismiss it before it’s even published.

A somewhat disingenuous comment I think but unsurprising.

Many people, included myself, are interested in the exchange between the two Charles’s because it appears to confirm what we suspected all along.

Confirmation bias.

Yes we have no idea. Maybe this one revelation, shocking though it is, is all that's in there that we don't already know. Or maybe there are lots of shocking revelations to come. Time will tell.

Absolutely. They always lead on a shocker - draws in the punters - some people go haywire, plenty of confirmation bias about - the Daily Mail does well out of it! £££££
Diana loved the Daily Mail and kept them well informed.

There may be more revelations, no one can know except those who nicked a copy. Time will tell, I'm doubtful because serialisations tend to lead with the most explosive extracts. This could be different but even if it is I'm not sure that 30 year old stories will produce anything except a few headlines.

Who knows? Each time someone has the courage to challenge the monarch, a little bit of the so-called mystique is rubbed away and other people have the courage to come forward as well. I certainly hope so anyway,

Lol. Not as much as he should be. Close friends with three nieces. Houses and funds Andrew on top of that. Plus suitcases of cash which would lead with anyone else to convictions for money laundering

Lol.
If you're not challenging the monarch, give it a go!

Is there much mystique left? I wouldn't have thought so. I see the monarchy as fulfilling a role in government whilst occasionally wearing fancy hats that's all. Mind you I am sure there are others with more traditional views of the monarchy than me.

Spitting image ended in 1996, thirty years ago.
Private eye has a circulation of 228k a year.
The Windsor's ended in 2023, over three years ago.
Saturday night live is an American show. I have never seen it, but AI tells me they have a critical sketch about the royal family about once every few months.

Wow!! The criticism is really non stop over thirty years I guess.

Their only real governmental role is blocking laws and getting exemptions from laws to benefit themselves. They are exempt from hundreds of laws from laws to protect birds, to health and safety laws.

No, I think some people don't realise this. The royals have been satirised and skewered since time immemorial. The current climate is no different.
I enjoyed the latest SNL sketch set in Balmoral!

Does anyone know if CS is at least donating some proceeds from this book to charity?

bluegreygreen · 17/09/2026 17:06

Why would he?

He’s an author. It’s one of the ways he makes money.

Or that's what CS's PR department wants us to think? He's gotten great publicity for the book and no actual leaking. But I'm just a paranoid American.

Did the Prince of Wales later George IV get hammer from someone called Gilray?

KC3 or POW as he was then is a ‘bellowing buffoon’. CS not holding back.

Yes, indeed! Lampooned most viciously!

Uricon2 · 17/09/2026 19:10

The person I feel most sorry for in all this is William, a wife who has been seriously ill, stuck between his father, his brother and now his uncle and further hurts alleged against his mother brought into the public gaze.

I really wouldn't blame him if he ever said " B*llocks to all this", TBH.

Exactly this. What an absolute shit show. His father also probably doesn't have long to live.
