I suspect HMTLQ saw quite early on that she wouldn't cut it as a working royal and was giving her an out.

I've no objection to her working, but I think casting her in a serious drama would look like a gimmick. She hasn't done any acting (as opposed to presenting) for 8 or 9 years and then only in a supporting role in a minor tv series - there must be actresses with a more up to date cv and better track record than hers who deserve to be considered ahead of her.

I’m not a fan of her but don’t be silly, she had a pretty large part that ran for multiple seasons of a popular networked show.

BBC reporting that she’s in talks with Netflix about appearing in new series of their drama The Gentleman. Guy Ritchie thing, okay, not great.

I think the other stuff hasn't worked out, so it makes sense to go back to something she had a success with. I think something like Casualty or Hollyoaks would be good. That's not an insult, they're popular programmes.
