Unofficial Draft Guide to RFF

Was I the only one that felt a little badly for the MN team member who tried to get our input in order to help build a guide for this forum recently? That didn’t go as planned!

Am in the only one who laughed about Justine’s “The Royal family forum
is deranged” comment and can take it in stride? That thread was definitely an example!

I am proposing we try again and help crowd source a guide. I just ask that we don’t be so RFF, and have a sense of humor while we do so. I’ll paste my draft attempt below. Everyone is welcome to contribute however they like.

Many thanks autumn !
I have made a request for a new /split board on site stuff …I recommended that this board be split between royal chat and republican chat , I honestly think this is the only way to stop the squabbling, I would ask that everyone interested post on there to show support because I believe it is a numbers game for mn to decide.

It’s a good idea! But if posters determined to force discussion won’t keep that discussion to the threads created for that purpose it won’t prevent them from posting whenever they like.

When you are convinced it’s your duty to convert people to be teetotal you don’t go to the tea houses to do so.

Agreed. But my confusion is that they are trying to convert people to the cause by insulting them, for example "forelock tuggers" and "sycophants."

You'd think they'd grasp that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar....

Very true! , however I’m assuming that posters really do want to feel welcome to discuss their republican views with like minded people.
there is a world of difference between posting on a thread and doing the same thing on a different board.🤷‍♀️

Right. So a combo of my two posts. Telling themselves it’s a service to humanity while getting the warm feeling of enjoyment that some derive from conflict.

No, I think for most online it’s more like my beloved but inclined toward debate* relative said “You don’t want to argue? Then there’s nothing to talk about.”

*putting it mildly

That's a good point @MrsStarkey some people will always just find a way & ram it down your throat, baring in mind I'm Irish so I've no skin in the Monarchy v Republicans debate but I don't like when it turns to insults that are personal or What-a-bout-ery

IAmATorturedPoet · Yesterday 15:41

You may of course post anything you wish and wherever you like but if you walk into the middle of a golf green and sit down to start playing cards you cannot claim surprise when little white balls start flying about you

I like this @MrsStarkey 😊

Good idea, Jeff.
I know a few posters have requested this in the past. I think it’s worth a post (another post?) in Sitestuff for all the reasons you’ve mentioned. Let’s hope if it generates sufficient interest.

Thanks , yes I too remember this being floated before by some republicans ( sorry I’ve forgotten the names!) and perhaps it would mean new republican posters would feel more comfortable.

threesocksmorgan · Yesterday 16:10

I hope mn hq don't do that. posters being labeled and told what topic to use is going to cause problems.

LipglossAndLies · Yesterday 16:13

Logic then follows that those who post on Royal Family board are royalists.

Yet on this thread there are plenty of examples where people have said they are other not republicans or they are not royalists. So splitting a board will mean those who are not one or the other then have no board to go to. Unless you create a third category.

It's not simple to box people neatly into these labels. It also lends itself to them creating echo chambers.

@jeffgoldblum Think I've kept up with all the above but just to make sure....I'm a Royalist in that I like having a RF (with all the history and tiaras, bells and whistles) but that doesn't mean I always approve of stuff individuals get up to. Will I still have a seat at the RF Chat table or do all the posts have to be positive? I like to think I'm generally respectful in my views....🤔 Apologies if this is all obvious, the foggy brain has the upper hand at the mo...

Anyone can post anywhere life , however obvious republican chat would be there and any other royal chat would remain the same! , I’m neither but do occasionally dip a toe in to discuss my disgust of Andrew.

Interesting.

Who will decide what subject goes where?

So .. AMW brings out a book, is that 'Royal chat' or 'Republican chat'?

Harry and Meghan go and stay for a week at Sandringham with the children. Which would that be? Especially if there is some sort of rapprochement.
Is that 'royal chat' or because they have left the UK, is it Republican chat.

I can see certain posters would want to see off those that stray onto the wrong section. And might there end up being the same thread in two different places?
Also... on here... there are very many who are neither one thing or the other.
And there possibly might be a lot of confusion!
I think this was asked for before, I'm not sure what happened. I've refrained from airing my opinion on Site Stuff as I don't want to be negative. If it happens, it happens.

The suggestion is obviously about topic rather than views of posters.

Chatting about mundane activities of members of the royal family vs doing away with the monarchy.

Whatever one thinks about the idea, it’s isn’t that complicated and in fact Rousette once proposed it. I suspect you don’t have anything to suggest that she was doing so for ill-intent?

Well a royal family board on any forum should allow conversations pro or against a royal family to take place without deliberately segregating people because calling a board republican means and you would expect is where posters who are republicans would talk hence its about the people.

That's why there are talk guidelines that govern every forum.

Its always good to see other people's opinions when they say within the guidelines set because it opens your thoughts to different perspectives to consider and it might even change your own.

Honestly, if they didn’t do it for Rousette back then doubtful they would at JeffGoldblum’s request now?

Does anyone know what happened back then? It looked like a serious consideration? Saw the original request but didn’t read more than that.

Did you see the original request? You can search and find it. I lost it already.

Surely you aren’t suggesting…

What about those that know the Monarchy isn't going to be disbanded so not a true Republican, but wants more transparency with what we've got. That would be a bit of a no-mans land! ?

It's an interesting thought, just no idea how it would work!

That sounds to be about the monarchy rather than the Royal Family so maybe Republic v Monarchy would be a better forum topic name.

So where do the posters who don’t have a label post.
can you imagine what would happen if someone posted and the boss decided they were in the wrong topic?

My2cents1975 · Yesterday 17:20

Republican arguments of substance (as opposed to the personal attacks and whataboutery) would make for interesting reading and could be a valuable part of the natural flow of conversation.

Moreover, if Republicans can't handle a thread, how on earth are they going to handle the contentious referendum?

Since you seem to be in charge of the labels perhaps you can decide.
