William denounced as "workshy" due to lack of royal engagements he performs

I read this article in the DM which was originally brought to my attention by my MIL, who has a very keen interest in goings-on involving the RF.

'His absences have not gone unnoticed': Norman Baker asks when 'workshy William' is going to step up https://mol.im/a/15908021

I must admit I was surprised to learn that William has attended fewer events than KC and Anne over the last 3 years. I agree with the sentiment that he needs to step up to ease the burden on his father.

NORMAN BAKER asks when 'workshy William' is going to step up

He might be a present husband and father, but when it comes to carrying out royal duties, the Prince of Wales is 'workshy', a royal expert has claimed.

That’s a paid article. You paid for this tripe? Now that’s commitment!

Is this the crisis management PR kicking in? Not very original.

He can’t read?! Some of these posts are crazy. I thought there might be some evidence that William is lazy, but the arguments are - he just is, he always has been, he can’t do much work because I think he’s lazy, so other people must do it, and if you don’t blindly agree, you’re naive / sheeple / PR victim. Maybe he works hard, maybe he lies around in his PJs all day, who knows?

Aren’t royals constantly doing appearances quite a modern phenomenon. I can’t imagine they were out all the time in the 1950s/60s. I know the Queen coming to my town in the 80s was a big deal.
Have our expectations that this is what we expect of Royals shaped by the Queen and Anne.

I always suspect he’s trying to change the idea of what they do is visits. I always think it’s a job he doesn’t really want and more so not a job that he wants his children to be doing for the rest of their lives, especially the younger two. You’re in a terrible position that if you quit you pass the job on to your child.

His wife had cancer treatment he probably is excused. The DM is the equivalent of a gossip over the fence they love the drama !

Does everyone with a spouse with cancer get to take years off?

As I’ve always maintained, the absolute worst thing the RF ever did was let H&M go. They’re the only ones that resonate with younger generations. The boomers will be gone soon and when that happens the RF will be gone too because they failed to modernise and connect with younger people. They put pride and jealousy over the family’s survival.

IMO William & his family are irrelevant to modern Britain. Their privileged lifestyle represents the past.

There is always talk that the RF are getting it wrong and that someone else would be better.

The very newspapers labelling William as useless now were the ones in 1997/1998 claiming that Charles would be the death of the monarchy and he must step aside for William or the family would fail.

Same as all the talk then about how marrying Camilla would doom him and he’d never be King.

People were sceptical when the-then Princess Elizabeth married Philip. A poor Greek ex Prince with a mad mother… she was obviously clueless and the monarchy was doomed between her and her shy father…

It’s the same with the way people praise Princess Anne and say it would be better if she had been the next monarch without giving any consideration to the fact that had she been the next in line she would have been brought up more like Charles and less as she was. And people would have been far less forgiving of the dangerous dogs conviction if she was higher in the line imo. Had that been Charles or William that would have been a much much bigger deal.

Pootles34 · 25/06/2026 16:35

Well, he's king - he's the top one, of course he has the most - and Anne's always been well known for it.

I hope they're deliberately allowing William some time for his family.

Why? He should be setting an example. He is in an extraordinarily privileged position and with that comes something he seems oblivious to. Duty.

This is a fair observation. I am sure the re is some burden attached.

However, I do think all adult lives have burden attached.

In fairness, he did not rush to the altar or rush to have have children. If he did not want the burden he had a lot of time to figure it out.

He was a grown man by the time he got married, plenty of life experience under his belt.

Do length of visits count too, so one person may have a number of short engagements, others have longer ones or ones that involve more travel

Pretty accurate description of the late Queens life, but I very much doubt that this is how it is now.

Which of those things do you think they do themselves? I’m perhaps being a bit facetious about being helped into jim-jams, but staff have still washed, ironed, and laid them out, and taken away the clothes they were wearing to clean/hang-up.

The first sentence article is referring to the first six months of this year. Kate finished her cancer treatment in 2024.

My 8 yr old daughter had treatment for cancer - surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy. Both I and DH were back at work full time within a month of her finishing treatment - and were still working part time whilst she was poorly. Someone else's illness over a year ago is not a reason for him to work less now.

Presumably you will be planning on retiring at some point? Yes?

Williams work -unlike most of us- will only get more pressured and more intense the older he gets. There will be no retirement.
He will when he is King get the famous ‘Red Boxes’ every day apart from Christmas Day. Every day.
Conservatively they take 2-3 hrs to read, question and sign off.
I’m pretty sure the late Queen decided to ease William and Kate into their duties especially when they had 3 small children. She could see how it badly affected Charles & Diana not seeing their parents much.
I don’t think William and Harry saw much of their parents either - more than royals used to but certainly not inthe way the rest of us would .
William and Catherine did not want this for their children. The Duchy of Cornwall will now take up a lot of William’s time.
He will work till the day he dies. He will be head of state. Give him a break!

It was a nasty made up description and leave their children alone. Commenting on people bathing kids that age, ffs.

There was talk in the 80's that Randy Andy and Fergie would make a better King and Queen than C & D as he was more relatable and relaxed than the stuffed shirt C was styled as. That ended well......

Glad you bought up the red boxes.

Why are they being presented to the King/Queen - an unelected official to sign off on?

It is absurd that it would happen in a democracy.

Like - asking a headmaster to correct the governments homework before they they can go to the next level.

That is without ever looking at the conflict of interest and, for lack pop a better term, "insider trading."

We know the queen rode various governments hard for advantage.

Do you understand what ‘Head of State’ means?
Would you like me to find you a link to explain the role?

Well if I was judged on how I look and what I wear (as Catherine is every single time) then I would want professionals to look after my wardrobe too!

Cant believe I am defending the RF! But the fact that I dont agree with the monarchy as an institution doesnt alter the fact that they are here, they exist and slagging off how they manage their lives is hardly fair. OK so Catherine had a choice but William didnt and this is how it is done.
