Too late to edit...
My white African MIL would correct me if I said the word.
This was when staying for extended periods in Zimbabwe. If in the UK she would keep quiet if anyone mentioned their nanny because different culture. She did nearly hit the ceiling when I added kafir lime leaves to the shopping list. I had to show the recipe as evidence that I wasn't a raging racist 😅

We call our mixed race son “boy” as a term of endearment. I’m not sure how it ended up in our family lexicon, but it may well be from my husband’s Welsh ancestry. A subset of Americans using ordinary, everyday words as slurs couldn’t be further from our minds.

DryTerryandJUNE · Yesterday 09:32

Do we think they will sell up in California? Citing politics..? Presumably it's a smaller property and labour is cheaper in Portugal, so they can have a modernised house on a smaller budget.

The new photos on Aserver are poorly designed and taken.

Boy is a well known racial slur used against black men. Girl is a supportive sisterly term.

As others have already said, it may well be a racial slur in the US but it certainly isn’t used in that way here in the U.K.
Genuinely, thank you for answering my question, obviously I will still be continuing to use boy/girl as I know it to be used here in the U.K.

I thought it was just a rumour they had bought a place in Portugal ?

Weren't they rumoured to be buying off-plan from the tequila salesman?

Why might it need a makeover?

Why might it need a makeover?

Meghan seems to need to live in a Soho House mock up. Isn't that what is being dismantled at Frogmore Cottage?

Looks like MM managed to stay
off insta for the duration of the wedding. Maybe H took her out somewhere to distract her?!

Or she took him out somewhere to distract him?

Maybe she can get them to send the copper bath over.

I remember a huge argument on here when an apparently American poster got very heated about "faggots" as in the meat and offal dish, often served with peas, and insisted it should be changed to "meatballs" because the word "faggot" was used by more people worldwide as a derogatory term for a gay man than for a foodstuff.

I remember that! , it’s also the name of bundled sticks used to light fires.
I also remember when it was pointed out that certain terms they use have different meanings here , such as “Fanny “ now well known as slang for a womans private parts and bum for a homeless person is rather insulting here ! , however that was different apparently! 🤷‍♀️

I was once assured vehemently - and then attacked personally as as racist when. I didn't agree - for insisting that "gypsy" is not a racist term of abuse.

Where? , because I can tell you it’s not in the U.K. !!! , I have a “boy “ and a “girl” neither is a term that denotes anything at all to do with race at all!
, sorry to rant but I’m deeply fed up with American race critical theory being brought into everything, it’s about time that people realised that although we may share a common language our history and culture diverged a long , long time ago, as is the case with Australia , Canada and New Zealand, it’s about time we realised our differences and stopped shoving them down each other’s throats!

Wise words, jeff

There's nothing wrong with being sensitive to local ways of doing things, but the key word is local and I'm not sure why they get turned into overall expectations

... and I was the one, back when I smoked, who once told a American southerner thhat I was "dying for a fag" Blush Grin

Back on topic! , I thought this rumour was debunked years ago as apart from the original article, no proof was ever found and no buildings were on the plot either! 🤷‍♀️

as an ex smoker I also inadvertently sparked the same argument on here when I also commented that I could really “ kill for a fag right now!” 🙄

Or she took him out somewhere to distract him?

There was plenty of Sussex action in the run-up to the wedding.

I think there were 3 stories in total of why they weren't going (unless anyone counted more)?
-not invited because William was a bully so Peter had to side with him
-not going because Harry was so upset about Peter selling the photos of the first wedding to Hello (and breaching Chelsy's privacy)
-not going by choice - Peter phoned and asked if Harry wanted an invitation and he said no

Yes! And the wedding that they were left out of… reminding everyone that they choose who they see and the RF have no part in their choices whatsoever no no, in this case ooo don’t forget how close we are to Jack and Euge, mind what you say about us eh?! Here we are moving on with our lives while you’re all stuck doing stuffy RF stuff

An awful lot of words to sum up “ I’m pissed off , I wasn’t invited “ 😁

My father had a job with an American company in the late 70s so we lived abroad, not in the US but amongst an American community, for a couple of years.
A frozen silence ensued when, while we were planning an early start to a trip with some friends, my mother invited one of the husbands (who was boasting about finding getting up early easy) to "knock me up in the morning"...
It certainly overshadowed my embarrassment at mentioning a rubber to one of my school friends.

Since they have spent the sum total of eff all on their Olive Garden in Montecito (not even a new kitchen, which should be the basic), I find it highly suspect they could: A. afford another home and B. revamp a brand new build (which they would have had input into interior design during the build.

I call BS on this story

Has it ever been confirmed they actually bought in Portugal? Seems weird, I would find it more believable if it was a property in Aspen, or the Hamptons or NYC.

In Wales, people use “boy” as a term of endearment. My sons (and grandsons) are still addressed as “boy” when their Welsh grandad speaks to them, even though they’re now in their mid-to-late 40s.

& in cork & waterford.

I agree with that , but (& I've lost track of the timeline here ) they may have bought a holiday house - which possibly was at a Brooksbank discount , don't know - as they must be one of the few in their circle , or circle they aspire to , with only one house ( I do not count the RF in this obvs.) That's probably a bit mean , I could see them wanting somewhere private and before the Netflix cancellation and in the early days of As Ever , or American Riviera , again I've lost track of the timeline , might have sounded eminently affordable. £6.3m according to reports , but who knows. I very much doubt also that they will move there wholesale. Possibly rent out for income ? 😊

ETA I actually do agree with @MrsFinkelstein - I could see other locations being more attractive to M particularly , but maybe more expensive?

This could just be an unconfirmed rumour to give some publicity to Beatrice's husband's development and Soho house. Although increasingly with H&M , I don't believe any publicity is good publicity. I know someone who comes from a genuinely well off family. He has moved to Portugal temporarily & I did ask him if he was moving to the Beatrice compound. He just smiled and said "no".
