Hadn't seen either Serena's or Helen's before.
Really don't like Serena's and, despite her tiara being on straight, her hairstyle being asymmetric makes it look like she’s wearing it at an inappropriate jaunty angle.

Why she added that fake pile of plaits is anyone's guess. She's a very attractive woman, and subsequently has been really stylish. I think she was going for a Margaret vibe which misfired.

Diana's wedding dress was very much of the time. I remember watching it on tv as a child and the late Clive James described it as an explosion in a parachute factory. I believe the designer was horrified at how crushed it was when she got out of the coach but I might be remembering that wrong.

Sarah's dress was better.

Anne's dress was Fabulous. So regal. The sleeves looked like blooming flowers and I believe there were little epaulettes stitched in tiny pearls as a nod to the family's military history. You'll have to scroll down past Catherine on this site but you can see it!

The Emmanuels didn’t factor in that the dress would be crammed into a carriage for the journey to the church. I suspect it had never been folded before.

I think they were young and excitable designers who got carried away with the drama of it, David Emmanuel said that they added length to the train to make it even more spectacular and longer than any previous ones.

Anyone see the video of Harry smacking the lifeguards ass ? Immature boys locker room ‘humor’ on full display at a public event, shame the guy didn’t turn around and punch him.

Harry's partial to a bit of nipple tweaking too 🙄

It felt like Diana was in there somewhere but totally swamped by their decision to add every single 80s design element: enormous sleeves, bows, ruffles, beading, it was all too much even before you got to the massive train.

And who designs a dress without thinking about where it is worn? It looks ok in the formal photos because it's obviously been steamed but it was a mess when she emerged from the carriage.

I watched a very interesting documentary about Diana's dress. She was the driving factor - she wanted it to be huge and dramatic. It was the height of fashion style wise, but definitely at the apex of that style. She wanted sequins, lace, embroidery, bows and a huge skirt.
It was going to be in St Paul's Cathedral and so had to be dramatic.
They said how thrilled and excited Diana was, she looked at every drawing and was very involved. She'd looked up the length of the longest bridal train, and told them to make it longer!

I'll assign some blame to Diana now! She was very young, just a pity they didn't reign the design in a bit.

Mine you I now have an image of Diana trying to fill St Paul's with her dress!

One day, she came in with antique lace that had to be incorporated. They put it on the bodice and to trim the sleeves.

It’s giving me “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” vibes - when in the planning process the teenager brides have to have the biggest, fanciest dress of all time and come in with their childhood fairytale wedding dresses scribbled out on a piece of paper. I wonder who got inspiration from who….

I think of Alice in The Vicar of Dibley…

I still think Diana’s dress was magnificent in all its lunacy.

I've just had a look at Diana's wedding dress after years of not thinking about it at all. Actually- I like it now. A true iconic dress. And perhaps rather poignant when you think of that young girl- brought up on romance novels thinking of her dream wedding to her dream prince, when she knew already that it was troubled.

I do remember the shrieks when get got out of the carriage 'It's WRINKLED!!!'. But even that- when you think about it became part of the legend.

Lord what pressure the royal brides are under!

BasiliskStare · Today 16:52

Diana's dress was of its time. But that was when I was excited to have bought a Laura Ashley cotton blouse (there can be no other word) with a sailor collar & bow and elbow length puff sleeves. O tempora , O mores!
