Here we go, another article about that 'quiet faith' that has been completely silent until now!

As one of the btl comments suggests, is there some rebranding going on???

Surely not!

I would say name calling is mockery.

Well, yes.

jeffgoldblum · 05/04/2026 19:11

CurlewKate · 05/04/2026 18:45

I didn’t call anyone a peasant!!!!

I have already explained the origin behind that term , perhaps you should educate yourself before deciding to insult people.

BasiliskStare · 05/04/2026 19:29

CurlewKate · 05/04/2026 17:29

Oh, I’m not mocking them for it. But it’s undeniably forelock tugging cap doffery.

Now I don't necessarily agree with you here. There are people (spectators) who will go and see "events". It is obvious there are those who go and see the RF processing to the church , but that doesn't mean all of them are forelock tugging & cap doffing. For some people these royal things are a day out (cf people who line the Mall for Royal processions ) - Doesn't mean to say they are " cap doffing , they think the RF are better than we " people. Some people just quite like to look at something.

I think I would be with you if you replace "undeniably" with , "in my opinion" . But that's just my opinion - but each to their own

simpsonthecat · 05/04/2026 19:34

I can't imagine giving up my special Christmas Day with my precious family, to stand for hours in the cold to stare at a family I don't know!
Just.my opinion. Each to their own.

As you know, I was not using the word in that context. But I’m surprised you think that it’s insulting to call someone a peasant. A little snobby, don’t you think? Incidentally, did you know that calling somebody a snob is actually calling them a shoemaker? Learn something new every day!

How would I know what context you are using! , you are the one calling people demeaning names, and don’t you dare pretend it wasn’t meant in a derogatory way.
where exactly did I call you a snob ? 🙄
complicated narrative again?

I didn’t say you called me a snob. I said you were being one for thinking calling someone a peasant is demeaning. I wasn’t, by the way. Forelock tugger now just means showing too much deference, regardless of social class or occupation. Jacob Rees Mogg, for example. Rory Stewart. Penny Mordant. forelock tuggers to a person! But I do think that undue deference to the Royal Family is not a particularly good thing for society. We should keep our admiration for people who deserve it. And not wait hours in the cold and rain (it wasn’t cold or wet today, before you point that out!) for a glimpse of some fairly average people born to privilege. Obviously people can do whatever they want. But I can also think it’s not a productive way to spend time.

So would you call someone a peasant to their face and expect them to take it as a compliment? If you would then your social skills are really off.

Have they actually identified themselves as “forelock tuggers” or is this you just name calling again?

Indeed ! Not an insult !

bluegreygreen · 05/04/2026 20:56

But I’m surprised you think that it’s insulting to call someone a peasant.

The only time in my life I've ever been called a peasant was in a tube station in London. It was clearly an insult.

(Apparently I was standing in the wrong place in the lift.)

They are very deferential to the RF. Yes, they are forelock tuggers. Or cap dodgers. In my opinion, deference to people who have not earned it is damaging to individuals and society.

CathyorClaire · 05/04/2026 21:35

Huh.

This has taken a turn.

FWIW I wish those who think their time is well spent waiting (over a freezing tenty night and on a pavement 😱) while hoping for a random royal to acknowledge them all the luck.

While I think they're overly misguided I also think the royals have and always have had an us v. pesky impertinent public mentality which is increasingly not serving them well

A perfectly reasonable comment, without the need to name call ! As ever , if anyone could persuade me you can!

I think I've offered you cookies as an enticement to the dark side before?

They really are delicious 😈

I don’t think forelock tugger or cap doffer are on the Census, and as they appear never to have called themselves such either it’s clearly you just name calling again.

I wouldn’t queue for a royal but I did queue overnight for Duran Duran tickets. Happy days of youth.

@DisforDarkChocolate i wonder whether having both his dad and wife with cancer, paused him to reflect. My relative was an atheist. 2 heart attacks, triple bypass and being resuscitated (twice), changed him. He came out completely believing in a Christian god. Was quite weird, as he’d been so adamant that there was no god, to not missing a Sunday church service unless unwell.

CurlewKate · 05/04/2026 23:29

Are you suggesting that you can only call someone something disobliging if they have already identified as whatever it is? 😂😂 “Excuse me, Mr Rees-Mogg, I want to call you a cap-doffing toady on Mumsnet. Is that how you identify?””Mr Stewart- you’re obviously absurdly deferential to the Royal Family- is it OK if I call you a forelock tugger on Mumsnet? Love your views on the Middle East , by the way”

The divine right of kings isn’t a thing anymore and effectively ended with the Glorious Revolution. The Stuarts were the last to seriously lean on it, but Parliament removed the two who pushed it too far: Charles I 🪓 and James II 🛳️

And history makes the point for itself: divine right or not, kings who lose support and fall out with the establishment don’t last in England — Edward II, Richard II, and Henry VI.

Edward VIII is also good example of how, in the modern monarchy, personal will runs up against constitutional and religious constraints. As Supreme Governor of the Church of England, he still could not marry a divorced woman under the Church’s stance at the time.

If a king gets too far out of step with those constraints, they don’t last, and that expectation is exactly what keeps the system in check.

God was mentioned quite a few times during the coronation just a few years ago.

I never said you can’t call someone a name, though why you want to name call really undermines your argument and doesn’t put you in a good light. You were stating it as a fact that they were forelock tuggers when they have never said anything of the sort, it’s just your opinion, but you know that, it isn’t complicated. I notice you dodged answering my question about would you call someone a peasant to their face and expect them to take it as a compliment ? The floor is yours…….

Have you seriously not learned by now that calling people names because you don’t like them or don’t agree with them is bad behaviour?
if multiple people tell you something is insulting are you arrogant enough to think you know better?
if I said you had the emotional intelligence of a cart horse would you be offended? 🙄
