Here we go, another article about that 'quiet faith' that has been completely silent until now!

As one of the btl comments suggests, is there some rebranding going on???

Surely not!

I really don't think he will - that argument hasn't been wielded or believed for years .

Very true but then nobody has tugged a forelock in years but apparently that’s still something we are accused of! 🤷‍♀️

He's next in line to the throne and when the time comes he'll justify his position by claiming that he's been appointed by God to rule over us in hope that we don't question it. He's just setting the tone.

The divine right of kings isn’t a thing anymore and effectively ended with the Glorious Revolution. The Stuarts were the last to seriously lean on it, but Parliament removed the two who pushed it too far: Charles I 🪓 and James II 🛳️

And history makes the point for itself: divine right or not, kings who lose support and fall out with the establishment don’t last in England — Edward II, Richard II, and Henry VI.

Edward VIII is also good example of how, in the modern monarchy, personal will runs up against constitutional and religious constraints. As Supreme Governor of the Church of England, he still could not marry a divorced woman under the Church’s stance at the time.

If a king gets too far out of step with those constraints, they don’t last, and that expectation is exactly what keeps the system in check.

I know people (not mentioning any names!) who do a lot of forelock tugging! 🤣🤣

That definitely seems to be very much a you issue then !
im sure its very complicated 🤷‍♀️

We only have to see those that gather on Christmas Day to catch a glimpse of a Royal, they nearly expire with excitement! Whilst they are not literally tugging forelocks, it's the modern day version of it!

I don’t think it is a “me issue”! For example, have you seen the people queuing outside St George’s or Crathie Kirk for a glimpse?

I don't think so. I don't think they're there to tug forelocks, but to see some famous people at a place they're always at on that day of the year. Like train spotting or bird watching when you know you're sure of a spot.

The litmus test for forelock-tugger might be to have the burley bobyguards tell them, five minutes before the RF is due, to clear off home - RF not doing the public-show thing today. I posit that a forelock-tugger would be all "lawks, Christmas is ruined now, but he is the King, so I shall do as bid" while meekly complying.

But I doubt that the Sandringham sightseers would behave that way. I think they have a sense of entitlement to the RF's time and attention, rather than honoured deference.

simpsonthecat · 05/04/2026 14:33

My oh my, it is total deference IMO! Why would they leave their families on Christmas day, some even camping out overnight just to catch a glimpse of a Royal.
Just my opinion

This is not just my opinion. It is a fact. A family was bereaved and all at sea about what to do at Christmas, so they went to the Norfolk coast for part of the day and called in at Sandringham on the way, and saw the late queen. My oh my, it wasn't total deference.

Is that not similar to people who queue up to see any celebrities?

People even queue ovenight in some cases.

simpsonthecat · 05/04/2026 15:04

One family. Just one.
Condolences if it was your family

jeffgoldblum · 05/04/2026 15:14

Forelock tugging was a traditional way of showing respect to those of a higher class or position, most used by those in the working classes, farm hands and servants, it’s use now towards other posters on this forum is used purely in an insulting manner, likening people with different opinions as peasants or inferior to yourself!
its outdated and comes from an old fashioned time when people thought others should firmly stay in their place.

You see I think it's rather cruel and dismissive to mock people for the things that they choose to do. It would be a boring place if we all liked the same things. Opera - I happily give that a miss. Cliff Richard Fan club - again not for me. Highland Shows - not for me. Running 20kms- nope. Personally I would not travel to look at the RF or Tom Hardy but in they were in my village I might cop a look. 😉

We haven’t had cap doffer for a while, I prefer that one, it has more of a dramatic flourish to it.

Agree. For me, apart from travelling to see celebrities, it's the ubiquitous MN spa day.

I would rather cut my own arm off than go on a spa day !! But I don’t judge those that enjoy them.

CurlewKate · 05/04/2026 17:29

Oh, I’m not mocking them for it. But it’s undeniably forelock tugging cap doffery.

damelza · 05/04/2026 17:31

I am not in awe of any of them just to mention! In fact if their names come up anywhere with devotion or whatever, I immediately place them in my mind's eye on the toilet throne, straining with a touch of constipation. We all have to do it you see. Loo the Leveller.

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/04/2026 17:36

It's just their most recent big fat pile of steaming crap/lies. He's had 40 years to show any indication of being a Christian and he's never bothered. That's more than quite.

Well, given that some of us are putting up a spirited argument that it is not forelock-tugging, is is actually not "undeniably" the case that it is.
