Tina Brown Thinks the Über-Rich Have It Coming
By Lulu Garcia-Navarro

Lulu Garcia-Navarro: One of your other specialties is the royal family. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are trying to make their own way in the world. They’ve had a rocky time being entrepreneurs. Do you think they have anything to offer anymore?

Tina Brown: It’s very sad what’s happened to them. I have never seen anybody in professional life make as many mistakes as Meghan has, and unfortunately Harry is not the brightest bulb, either. He thought that Meghan would be his guide in the big wide world beyond Buckingham Palace, and it turns out that Meghan makes one terrible professional decision after another. And now they’re pariahs everywhere, it seems, which is a very difficult situation for them because America was supposed to be the place that paid the bills.

What is sad is that Harry’s very good at being a prince. He’s charming, he’s upbeat, he’s attractive, he makes people happy when he walks into a room, he’s very good with young people. You could send him around the world and he’s always going to be welcomed and appealing. And I think he has realized too late that he was born to be a prince. And now he’s essentially just some guy doing P.R. gigs while Meghan tries out her latest cooking idea or whatever.

It looks more and more as if Harry’s best decision would be to find a way to come back to England. I’d like to see a way for him to make amends with his family, but it gets harder and harder as the years go by. I think that William is going to be the decider of that, and I think William has a very tough view of the whole situation, which is that the betrayal of Harry is not something that can be remedied.

I completely agree that he should have printed a retraction, made it clear it was not his work (despite his name being put to it) and apologised. As far as I'm aware, the only place he's said sorry is on the Vintage Read Show, and she's now dropped him (they were formerly doing a weekly podcast). If the man who brought down Andrew MW has something to say, he should just say it. His current approach is rather cowardly, and I am disappointed in him, as I think he's done good work in the past.

made it clear it was not his work (despite his name being put to it)

If his name is at the top of the article then it is his work.

Lots of authors employ researchers and editors, but if something is published under their name it becomes their work. Put it this way, if there were to be a legal case, Andrew Lownie would be liable, not this unnamed junior scribbler, if they even exist.

NewAgeNewMe · 27/11/2025 16:59

Well we won’t really know whether others are bad apples. I think the stuff that Andrew wasn’t great (to put it mildly) has been known for years…

There's as much chance of the King invitng me to become a senior working member of the RF as there is of either Harry or Meghan being welcomed back in any official capacity. For wherever those 2 go trouble & drama will surely follow.

Mind you HRH The Duchess of Gusset does have a certain ring to it...

If ever there were a time to say "Bring in Gusset" 😂

Requirements being -
Waving to crowds and well-wishers (regally)
Asking politely whether people have come far
Not nicking stuff

Yes I know the legal position of principle and agent, and I don't disagree that if his name was on it, he should be legally liable for it. However, outside the legal position, his name carries a lot of weight now . So if it wasn't indeed his work, he needs to be open about that fact on SM where this has gone viral; and admit - through a vehicle with distribution at least equal to the original substack article - that he is allowed a random to write in his name, unchecked, and that these particular words attributed to him, in that article about William, are false and not his (weighty) opinion based on research.

However, I'm not sure I believe the rogue assistant tale!

JustHaveANiceCupOfTea · 27/11/2025 19:03

@BemusedAmerican I'm now imagining Meghan showing penguins how to "elevate" their fish with flower sprinkles as they get increasingly irritated with her! 😂 🐧

I don't think Harry could be a working Royal again after he told us in Spare how burnt out he was with royal tours. He also defamed the most senior advisors and gave them childish nicknames. Hard to see him settling back in to work with them.

bluegreygreen · 27/11/2025 20:37

If his name is at the top of the article then it is his work.

That was how I looked at it - not only from the principle, but also that this was a subscription Substack, not a free one, so people would have expected the writing to be his unless told otherwise.

I'm disappointed in the relative meanness of the apology, and had wondered about the reality of the assistant.

Edited

I too have my doubts that this unnamed 'assistant' exists. But let's say they do. Lownie is basically saying that he allows 'assistants' to publish under his name without bothering to check what they write. That's not good journalistic practice at all.

This is so boring ,unoriginal and not remotely true. These sorts of comments are on a rinse and repeat cycle and really meaningless

Harry was only ever likable thanks to the palace PR machine

While I agree with this, @PuppiesProzacProsecco, let's not forget that applies to the rest of them too

The difference is that Harry chose to go off piste and has shown us exactly what he is via his own words and deeds, but who's to say what people would think of the others if it wasn't for the PR people and their own silence?

I agree about the PR and the likeability of the rest of the Royal family.

Without PR; and a sycophantic rota of journalists, I’m not sure we’d think well of any of them.

Meghan and Harry want people to talk about them, though. That's why they've released a documentary series about themselves, done major interviews on TV and in print, released a memoir, put out a lifestyle series. Public attention is the whole point of those things.

They just can't control whether it's positive or negative attention, which clearly frustrates them and their supporters.

Not at all because they are the gift that keeps on giving, Maybe the pair should be more thoughtful towards the public whom they continually force themselves on with their faux working Royals . It’s not working for them as they are sliding further and further down the totem pole

Exactly . Contrary to what I have been accused of , I don’t hate them . I don’t like a lot of their behaviour . I don’t like bullies or liars . But it is absolutely fascinating to watch 2 people who had so much goodwill and so many opportunities to do good make such a complete and utter shambles of everything.

Nobody "hates" them! There's absolutely no hate on here. It's just the usual accusation. Ignore.

It’s just a copy and paste exercise for the mega fans with no originality about it.

Yep, and the ‘haters’ and ‘living in your head’ accusations come from people who appear to be so personally wounded by any criticism or negativity of H&M, they trawl online forums to reproach anyone who is deemed to not be as massively in love with the renegade royals as they are.

FleurDeFleur · 28/11/2025 08:41

I actually don't understand that phrase "living rent free in your head"? What does that even mean? When you think about someone, should you charge them?

It’s obviously a saying they are very excited about as it’s banded about incessantly
