Tina Brown Thinks the Über-Rich Have It Coming
By Lulu Garcia-Navarro

Lulu Garcia-Navarro: One of your other specialties is the royal family. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are trying to make their own way in the world. They’ve had a rocky time being entrepreneurs. Do you think they have anything to offer anymore?

Tina Brown: It’s very sad what’s happened to them. I have never seen anybody in professional life make as many mistakes as Meghan has, and unfortunately Harry is not the brightest bulb, either. He thought that Meghan would be his guide in the big wide world beyond Buckingham Palace, and it turns out that Meghan makes one terrible professional decision after another. And now they’re pariahs everywhere, it seems, which is a very difficult situation for them because America was supposed to be the place that paid the bills.

What is sad is that Harry’s very good at being a prince. He’s charming, he’s upbeat, he’s attractive, he makes people happy when he walks into a room, he’s very good with young people. You could send him around the world and he’s always going to be welcomed and appealing. And I think he has realized too late that he was born to be a prince. And now he’s essentially just some guy doing P.R. gigs while Meghan tries out her latest cooking idea or whatever.

It looks more and more as if Harry’s best decision would be to find a way to come back to England. I’d like to see a way for him to make amends with his family, but it gets harder and harder as the years go by. I think that William is going to be the decider of that, and I think William has a very tough view of the whole situation, which is that the betrayal of Harry is not something that can be remedied.

Arent they toddlers? Why would they have social media? We are talking about George. And yes I would. Of course children need to be protected from social media but its not as easy for most people as saying ' My kid wont have a phone' because for most people with secondary school aged children that is not feasible.

They're not toddlers, they're 6 and 4.
I just think it's interesting that H&M are not criticised for saying exactly the same thing.
How odd.
For what it's worth I applaud H&M for taking this stand. They've spoken openly about not giving their children phones and the dangers of sm.
In my opinion, both couples are correct.

I didn’t read the press reports on the phone issue but saw the interview with Eugene Levy where William mentioned it.

Eugene was surprised that they were still managing to hold off a phone for George presumably because he sees similarly privileged rich celebrity kids who don’t need a phone for any of the reasons you mention getting a phone when they want one.

That's interesting, isn't it?

Not in those words but the image they put out there is that they are just a couple of parents trying to juggle work with school runs and no live in staff, just trying to get the dinner on every night. For example, Williams 'George hasnt got a mobile phone' well that's fine. He has a close protection officer next to him 24 hours a day. He doesn't have to get the bus to school! To his credit Charles is far better at showing empathy without pretending to be an example to others.

Let's correct that shall we? The image YOU create in your mind from what you read in the press...

The Wales children are not the only children of wealthy people whose lives are very different from the average. For example, there have also been numerous articles about how tech bosses tend to raise their children without much technology, it's a whole thing in Silicon Valley. I bet the offspring of the wealthy would find lots in common with them.

Their lives are normal for them, personally I'd rather have less money and not have to worry that one day my children will read the vile lies social media and the press chose to amplify whilst their mother was very sick. They are being raised in very unique circumstances and i think William and Catherine, as far as we can tell, which isn't very far, are doing a pretty good job.

The press love the "just like us" narrative because it enables them to continue the hero/villain cycle they use on everyone in the public eye to keep the clicks coming. It's not William's decision to put that out there. The most he does is give the odd snippet of what music his children like or comment on a few parental choices in the context of a specific visit.

I must say I always thought it a bit strange that Sophie and Edward rattled around in such an enormous place - I read somewhere that Bagshot was the biggest of all the residences of the siblings. Much bigger and grander than Highgrove. Or Royal Lodge. Or Gatcombe (another good move by Anne, along with not accepting titles for her husband and by default her children, Gatcombe was a wedding present from HMTLQ, and privately owned. Thus never going to be a problem regarding management of The Crown estate and subject to future investigation or criticism).

But whilst it’s easy to criticise/complain about children of the sovereign living in these grand houses, the flip side is, if not them - who? People with the wealth to pay massive rents and running costs for these houses are in short supply. If you are renting one of those historic houses, maintenance will cost a fortune and yet what with it being a listed building as well as not your own property, there is zero chance you can make any significant changes to modernise or personalise your home. Even substantially changing the gardens would likely be opposed and anyway why would anyone invest in a new grand garden project in a property they don’t own?
Then there is the matter of security. For all the cheering about the eviction of AMW from Royal Lodge - being in Windsor Great Park, within the security cordon, close to the residences of other key individuals, means it can’t just be let to some foreign billionaire with plenty of ready cash and a love of all things Royal.

I don’t have an answer to these questions but I can see there will be a problem deciding what to do with these properties.

I entirely agree with W&C in regards to that.

Quite interesting that E2 bought Gatcombe for Anne and had Sunninghill built for MW while seemingly leaving Ed to it.

I wonder if rattling round a 120 room gaffe is his answer to a perceived slight?

There are problems letting these historic properties. This story about a couple evicted from their flat at Hampton Court implies The (Late) Queen was the villain of the piece. Of course it was nothing to do with her as the properties are managed by Historic Royal Palaces. It seems tough and one sympathises but from other stories I read at the time I had the impression the couple asked to be able to charge their electric car and were told No, so they went and plugged it in anyway. It’s not about £30 of electricity, it’s about not using a specially installed charging point which I assume could have caused a significant risk of fire at a very historic location. How many fires eg Windsor, Notre Dame are caused by electric faults? Electric bikes are notorious for serious fires caused by charging faults.

Piccadilly Circus billboards warn of e-bike fires https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg5m74z6894o

So anyway this is a roundabout digression to illustrate some of the problems associated with renting out these historic homes.

I actually don't understand that phrase "living rent free in your head"? What does that even mean? When you think about someone, should you charge them?

I like having Harry and Meghan living rent free in my head, it’s more entertaining than them living rent free in the palace!

Yes, it's such a silly phrase. It gets churned out regularly, though.

I am totally here for it. Better than Dynasty or Dallas ever was.

Last year, a resident in my very elderly apartment building started a fire in the middle of the night by leaving the building while charging a lithium bike battery.

I wonder if the Hampton Court electrical lines can handle the car charging.

Depending on which school he goes to. Some of the biggest public schools don't allow mobiles until year 11.

TheCraicDealer · 02/12/2025 17:41

Our daughter is only 6 but parents in her year group are already talking about attitudes to phones and there are several families, including us, who won’t be providing anything other than a non-smart “brick” phone for emergencies only when the kids transition to secondary school. I don’t think W & K’s attitude is that unusual, and I don’t envy them having to also factor in security concerns and potential phone hacking into these parenting decisions.

Yes this was the reason. They either asked if they could install a compatible charging point or asked if they could simply plug in, I’m not sure which. Anyway they were told NO but went ahead and plugged in anyway, to a standard plug I believe.
An obvious fire risk at a very historically sensitive site.

Arguably a bit harsh to serve notice on them but no doubt it was felt they represented a risk since they wouldn’t abide by rules.

BemusedAmerican · 03/12/2025 13:41

I dont think it was too harsh. We've had lots of fires and deaths in NYC due to lithium batteries going up. I don't see the point risking lives and rendering people homeless because of selfishness.

Yes you are quite right. I wouldn’t be happy if I was the landlord either. Just had a soft hearted moment.

I KNOW!!
I can’t BELIEVE how LOW PEOPLE WILL GO to disparage A COMPLETE AND TOTAL STRANGER, but on whom (weirdly) they’ve become summa cum laude experts.
My apologies - I’m laughing hysterically.
I can scarcely believe the words people put into Meghan’s mouth and evil onto her every step! Why, it’s diabolical, it is.
And her so-called machinations of Harry?
Don’t get me started hahaha.
That’s beyond bizarre and ridiculous but still hilarious. The things people come up with never cease to amaze me lol.
They don’t - any of ‘em - know her - but that doesn’t stop them from being her #1 experts. Which absolutely kills me HAHAHA it’s just hysterical all these experts on Meghan who live a continent and ocean away from her lol. Still, they know everything about her, right down to her knickers or whether she’s wearing them hahaha.

It’s just sooo stupid and just a monumental waste of time.

If you aren’t laughing - you should ask yourself WHY you aren’t laughing.
Bexause the whole anti-Meghan thing is hysterical 😂😂😂
It’s hysterical because it’s ridiculous.
It’s ALWAYS been ridiculous.

I mean, you thought it was funny when Meghan was the butt of YOUR jokes, didn’t you?
Yeah you did. You most certainly did.
Even the media joined in.
I remember that Buzzfeed article showing the Kate/Meghan double standards in the media.
It wasn’t our imagination.
Either was your bullying or ignoring the bullying.

And now I’m laughing again.
I’m done being angry or sad.
But I AM done with the bullshit lying and bullying.
Y’all don’t have to like it hahaha.

And you know, this shouldn’t upset you at all if it doesn’t apply to you — you know that, right?
Sure ya do hahaha
