As has been said, he’ll still be a prince and that sound better than a duke.

Yes - my Dad knew Andrew in the Navy; I'm glad to say this will matter to him, Andrew, very much.

He's still a Prince though.

My point is that the King has not pulled the ultimate lever. He's done a fudge, just like his mother did.

The King can't pull the ultimate lever, that is down to parliament. This is an effective way to achieve the same aim without waiting for the legal process. The end result is the same Andrew is now just a Prince and nothing else.

It's a pretty lame point though, no matter how many times you repeat it.

Formally removing the Dukedom would be a long process taking up a lot of parliamentary time. Why go through that headache? It might be different if Andrew had a son who would inherit his title, but he doesn't. The fact remains that the title to all extents and purposes has been stripped.

Just saw this as MAIN/HEADLINE NEWS ON THE DUTCH "BBC" EQUIVALENT. That's how big this is!

Charles could remove it, simply by signing a Letters Patent to that effect. However, removing a Princely title from the son and now brother of a monarch is almost certainly not a precedent he would want to set.

I would love Parliament to force the King to remove the use of Prince. We know they won’t / can’t….but maybe William will one day.

How much of the family are funded is a question in itself. Not just Royal Lodge, but also Bagshot or whatever it’s called, where Edward lives (it’s huge). I do wonder.
(Looking forward to Norman Baker’s new book which is apparently about the family’s finances).

Yep...can't wait to read it. Let's face it though...every single one of the Royal family are money grabbing, lazy grifters!

Alright, we've got it! Give it a rest!

Not really. Andrew hasn't been stripped of anything.

Accuracy still matters to some of us!

I agree, it’s designed to look and feel like more than it is - in reality, nothing really changes.

He should be called legally to account

I expect most of us with agree with that, @MrsLeonFarrell, but it really isn't going to happen

If they couldn't risk Burrell speaking from a witness box they certainly won't risk Andrew, and ghastly as he is Burrell seems far better able to measure the impact of his words

Yes going by his Matlis interviewI'm sure a lot of people would be terrified about what he would say in the witness stand. He has no judgment.

Peaknique · 17/10/2025 19:54

His statement is literally on the Royal Family's website.

There is a big difference between not using, and giving up.

Will you change the record? The effect remains the same!

Rhaidimiddim · 17/10/2025 20:16

KeepTalkingBeth · 17/10/2025 19:57

Yes, as an atheist I think the whole church thing is a joke. Maybe Charles could give up that title, too, if nobody cares anyway?

I suspect William is looking at that already.

meercat23 · 17/10/2025 20:16

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/10/2025 19:59

Can they remove that? It's being described as his birthright, as the son of a queen. So if it's not given legally can they remove it? I genuinely don't know the answer.

The Danish Queen removed the title of Prince/Princess from four of her grandchildren. Not sure if that can be done here though

Peaknique · 17/10/2025 20:18

Tiredofbullsit · 17/10/2025 20:15

What effect? Most people would consider Prince to be a better title than Duke.

He hasn't been stripped of anything. He hasn't given up anything. As a PP says, it's a bit of a nothing.

But obvs the headlines will say differently.

Bumdrops · 17/10/2025 20:18

Peaknique · 17/10/2025 20:11

He's still a Prince though.

Yes, but clearly very much a disgraced one !
this news today really sends a good message that they Andrew- dick head and Sarah smug- face are unacceptable
they seemed to have been swanning around more than ever in recent years, especially smug- face, and all that “he’s an honourable man” bullocks !!
i’m not a royalist, but can tolerate them being around, but having a sleaze ball and the odd ex missus hanging on like someone who lives to photobomb - really infects the whole pool - so good riddance to the pair of them - disgraceful!!

Loyalwomansfriend · 17/10/2025 20:18

As a citizen of York I loudly applaud this decision.

anamo · 17/10/2025 20:19

He is Prince Andrew forever. I doubt anyone (apart from potential benefactors etc.) will even notice he won't be using the Duke of York title, or dressing up in the Garter robes anymore either.

Prince Andrew. Yep that's what he is until he dies, or it is removed by the mechanisms mentioned already.

Traceysgoingtobelivid · 17/10/2025 20:19

Peaknique · 17/10/2025 19:49

He hasn't given up his titles.

Would someone like to take this over from me? I have to make some food 😆

I’ve given up! 😂

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 17/10/2025 20:19

To us, the public, it doesn't seem much of a punishment for the awful way he has behaved and of course he deserves prison..
However I think this will matter hugely to Andrew and Sarah.

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/10/2025 20:19

JemimaTab · 17/10/2025 20:14

I agree, it’s designed to look and feel like more than it is - in reality, nothing really changes.

For Andrew things have changed drastically. He can't use his royal Dukedom, which ranks above Prince as a title. He can't dress in his Garter robes at events, like the Coronation. These things matter to him. Until fairly recently his friends were still briefing that he was wanting to return to public duties, that is now impossible. He is, as John Simpson is saying on the BBC "much much reduced in status, he has no royal status whatsoever", he had been" pushed away from the core of the royal family". It sounds symbolic but, in a country that runs on symbols and precedent, it matters and it removes him from any remaining status.

CathyorClaire · 17/10/2025 20:19

Haven't RTFT but from what I've seen reported slapped wrists and toothless tigers spring to mind.

I imagine the palace PR team are spinning fruitlessly as I type.

soupyspoon · 17/10/2025 20:02

Edward V and Edward VI were not adulterers
Mary
Elizabeth I and II probably
Lady Jane Grey

Thats about it I reckon

Most of those were Queens not Kings. Edward V died aged 12. Edward VI died at 15.

This will get him in the ego. It is not justice but it is not nothing.
