Trump State Visit

A space for thoughts.

My first is that being at Windsor might make it easier to host a foreign leader. Which then begs the question as to whether in the modern age we really need Buckingham Palace. None of the royals like living there and I bet you'd make a fortune hiring it out for events and tourists.

Whilst i find Catherine's coat dresses a little boring it makes sense to have a sort of uniform.

Diplomacy is hard work. I’ve had to attend a lot of networking/ soft diplomacy dinners and events as a spouse and it’s much much harder than it looks. They are also on a world stage being scrutinised very closely.

I’ve networked.

It’s not that hard compared to the jobs some people in this country are doing.

Im sure the many millions they receive from the taxpayer, their fully funded houses and security, make up for how hard they find it to smile and dress up for a couple of hours.

sittingonabeach · 18/09/2025 07:13

@DontReinMeIn did you have cameras on you at the time, millions of people watching you

Did you have to sit next to Trump?

elprup · 18/09/2025 07:27

Speaking of people looking ill, Trump looks remarkably well for someone pushing 80. I wonder if it’s because he’s tee-total.

Why did Kate have to wear that enormous blue sash and badges? A shame as it detracts from the beautiful dress!

ladybirdsanchez · 18/09/2025 07:42

I was busy yesterday so didn't pay any attention to this, but the photos in this morning's papers about the State Banquet. OMG, Kate looks fabulous, so regal, Trump looks like an orange toad and Melania looks like a topless banana. WTF was she thinking with that dress???? Hideous and so inappropriate for such a formal occasion.

SoNotaRealHousewife · 18/09/2025 07:43

Why is Melania dressed as a banana?

ladybirdsanchez · 18/09/2025 07:47

Melania's other outfits have been bloody awful too. That ludicrous floor-length trench coat she arrived in and then the flying saucer purple hat that completely covered her face. I don't know who her stylist is, but s/he should be fired.

sittingonabeach · 18/09/2025 07:51

When I first saw pictures of state banquet on tv I didn’t realise Melania was wearing a belt and thought she was showing bare midriff!

jumpingthehighjump · 18/09/2025 07:51

Haha yes the down to the ground Mac was hilarious! I have never ever seen a full-length Mac like that, she looked like Inspector Clouseau's sidekick!

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/09/2025 14:54

I don't think they look unwell. They look a bit tired but then they have just lost a much loved member of the family.

Agree.

Charles looks his age and is being treated for cancer. So understandable he looks tired.
Camilla looked like her awkward usual self yesterday with her wooden walk as though she can’t walk properly in whatever shoes she wears. She was apparently too ill to attend the Duchess of Kent funeral service on Tuesday but well enough to attend Trump visit the very next day (yesterday). She did not look ill.

Kate looks very thin but always has done. She looks tired and stressed which again is normal considering recent cancer diagnosis and treatment. She worries about the future like everyone else.

Dabralor · 18/09/2025 07:59

Melania’s looks have been poor - I think it’s still hard for her to find designers that will dress her.
Last night’s banana dress was Carolina Herrera but, whereas Kate’s was immaculately and bespoke tailored to her, Melania’s looked off the peg.

and Tiffany Trumps blue sparkly dress looked like what you’d wear to an American prom in 2008. Proper TK Maxx vibes.

Have you seen the guest list at the banquet? There are individuals there who have the power to invest tens of billions in the UK. If putting on a show, chatting and spending time with people encourages this investment it's surely a good thing.

You're saying you've networked and it's not that hard. Sometimes it is, so I wonder how much diplomacy you've done, and what was actually at stake.

Why is Melania dressed as a banana?

Perhaps a fruit bowl theme next to the orange?

MrsLeonFarrell · 18/09/2025 08:06

sminted · 18/09/2025 06:02

Kate's tiara looks massive on her head, it must be heavy!

Apparently it used to give Diana a headache when she wore it. I think it looked larger when Catherine wears her hair down. An updo balances it out more.

Dress code for a State Dinner includes wearing any orders you have been awarded. The blue sash is part of the Royal Victorian Order regalia.

I agree the orders look ugly but it's tradition.

I'm sure you haven't networked at the level they are doing. How ridiculous.

MrsLeonFarrell · 18/09/2025 08:12

I'm not a big fan of deciding for other people what is or isn't hard about their jobs and who has it worse. All jobs have good and bad points and most people work hard and find some bits easier than others.

I couldn't do what Catherine does, the constant scrutiny would destroy my mental health, let alone having to go hours without a loo break which would be all I could think about. Judging by how Catherine is when public speaking she would hate my old job, which involved speaking to large groups and which I loved.

My point in this ramble is that I don't get to decide for others how hard their job is or isn't because I'm not them.

Whatever anyone thinks of him clever Keir is imo handling the international situation well. Europe has underfunded its defence, and since Trump took office Vladimir has become emboldened and its suggested testing nato with drones I think, landing over the polish border. I think keir is playing the ling ga.e and for now we have to keep the US onside, as well as unite with our European partners. Like others, trump makes my skin crawl, agree with another poster Kate high neck, no flesh showing dress would have been my choice if I'd had to sit next to :
"Grab them by the pussy" trump 😡

Doingmybest12 · 18/09/2025 08:25

The size of the table ,and how do the kitchen and waiting staff serve the food out for all of these people and who are all the workers? I can't take the dressing up as Kings and Queens seriously.

birling16 · 18/09/2025 08:31

Thedom · 17/09/2025 21:12

I think Kate looks stunning, it’s an absolutely perfect dress for the type of event, it’s modest, elegant and regal, she outshines everyone there.

I think she looks ill. Very.

Weepixie · 18/09/2025 08:32

DontReinMeIn · 18/09/2025 06:42

I’m sorry but they do not work. They make appearances every so often and then they go back to living in the lap of luxury. I have no sympathy for them and I am disgusted by the entire farce.

Personally, I think there are worst things going on in the world to be disgusted about.

Do the RF do way more than you want to believe they do? Yes. Not that we don’t have to agree on that.

Mollydoggerson · 18/09/2025 08:35

I also initially thought Melania was showing her midriff, thought her dress was v Torremolinos night out.

KarmaComingToGetYaSweetCheeks · 18/09/2025 08:36

BeHappySloth · 17/09/2025 13:45

Trump is going to be lapping this up. I'm no monarchist, but I will acknowledge that the RF do really know how to do pageantry, and they will no doubt do a grand job of hosting.

I just really hope that this visit produces the results that the government is hoping for in order to justify the national shame and humiliation of having to roll out the red carpet for this despicable, narcissistic man. I do totally understand why they've done it, but it's so unedifying to watch them all having to fawn over him like this. And my concern is that, even if the fuss and the flattery wins him over to whatever they're eager to get him to agree with while he is here, he is so fickle that he could easily change his mind again tomorrow. And we'll then be left wondering what was the point.

It will be interesting to see how things unfold and how history judges this embarrassing spectacle. Will it be seen as Britain having pulled out all the stops to keep an unstable and capricious president in line, or will it be seen as the futile and shameful appeasement of a tyrant? Only time will tell.

Absolutely this 100% !

Networked?

Im sorry but the fact you think that what they’re doing is networking is a very good indicator that you don’t have a clue about what they are doing.

But I’m beginning to think you’re just here for a laugh because surely no one could seriously believe that all they do is just get dressed up and go out smiling for a couple of hours.
