The royal family

William's non attendance to important events

Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

Can't RTFT just now but will be catching up with interest when back from gallivanting 😁

Just wanted to add W has form for missing big occasions in favour of jollies along with being generally lazy. 35 before he stepped up in any meaningful way and dodging duty under pretext ever since.

A bone idle yet entitled heir doesn't bode well.

He does a lot of work 'under the radar' that is not hitting the news.

Not everything they do is reported as they don't want it to be.

I can't believe the nastiness on this thread about a man who lost his mum as a child, whose father has cancer, whose wife has cancer (or had and is in remission), whose brother slags him off in public , and is simply trying to keep his shit together and be a good dad as well as a Royal.

I do like the royal family and am generally supportive of them. However I have to agree, William doesn’t appear to have done many engagement at all over the last 6 months. And missing VJ Day is pretty poor. Compared with some of the Scandinavian royals, for instance crown princess Victoria of Sweden, who also has young children, he seems to have a very light engagement diary.

I can’t believe that it’s 2025 and people expect us to be sycophantic about a family who do nothing.

He doesn’t want to be a public royal. Fine, take the money a leave. Just go and live your life, you’ll still be able to afford the Wimbledon tickets.

Like what? Is he doing shift work in the dead of winter perhaps? A Headteacher ina challenging school perhaps? Helping manage food distrubution in an inner city?

Per this imaginative list, there is no preparation for any event.

Apparently chatting with dignitaries is all off the cuff. No diplomatic talking points, nothing to see but people talking.

Fairy tales of the republic indeed!

Yes, there's a lot of briefings, meetings, and reading behind the scenes. You're supposed to turn up knowing all about the organisation and the people who run it. And you have to get dressed up to the nines and smile as if there's no where else you'd rather be, whether you've had a bad night or are worried about a mole or had a shouting match with your spouse, or whatever. You cannot pull a sickie and curl up in your PJs, because your visit is a big deal and the organisation will have prepared for you and be really looking forward to meeting you. And then everything you wear and do and say during the engagement will be dissected by the Press. I really don't think it's the easy picnic that republicans like to make it out to be. There's a lot of pressure.

They’ve had the same nanny since George was 8 years old.

Having her mother move in alongside a nanny and a night nurse (here ya go, they advertised with Norland for one again with Charlotte https://www.theduchessdiary.com/will-kate-will-hire-maternity-nurse-royal-baby-2/ ) isn’t exactly a good look.

I don't know why you are so surprised by things like this. I live in a relatively small village and there is at least one night nanny who is well in demand. She has to be booked way in advance. Just because someone's life is different from yours it doesn't mean it's wrong.

stillavid · 20/08/2025 18:59

Kate's parents are certainly involved - her grandfather is to be found watching sports fixtures etc just like many many normal grandparents.

I thought the Wales had the same nanny for years since George was a baby? The Spanish lady who is Norland trained . . .

I think the problem is so many people are judging Williams' work ethic against standards/objectives that he doesn't buy into. So obviously he isn't going to be a Princess Anne doing 700 appointments a year because that's not what he think is important.

By those metrics he does less that Charles than the old Queen but in my opinion things need to change a lot so that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I think people nowadays just have different views re royals and royal adjacents. Close friend does a lot of work for an organisation (voluntarily) that just received a King's Award. The local Lord Lieutenant was sent to present it - you couldn't find anyone who was keen to bow or have photo taken - that type of hereditary role is just seen as slightly odd nowadays. Thank goodness we aren't a feudal society anymore. Same I think goes with the royal family.

Oh get real.

Night nannies are a thing for the uber rich to use. If they’ve got one there’s no need for them to be skipping work for the children.

If they all stepped down they would be vastly wealthy and we would still be paying for their security. I’m sure people still wouldn’t be happy.

And if they’ve had a bad night they have someone there to make breakfast and coffee and bring it to them in bed, they get gifted the clothes for free, if they’re worried about a mole they’ll have a dermatologist to the palace in an hour to check it out. If it’s something nasty it’ll be removed within 24 hours and treated.

We wouldn’t be paying for their security because they’d be private citizens.

So you are suggesting I am lying about the night nanny in my village? It's not " uber rich " eg my son and DIL have used one . ( in London) They are well off but not what I would deem " uber rich" . I would post her ad but would be too identifying .

BemusedAmerican · 20/08/2025 19:03

The UK got a better tariff deal with the US than the EU. Trump likes William. It is helping you:

Lampzade · 20/08/2025 19:03

William and Catherine are lazy AF
They were lazy before Kate’s cancer diagnosis and they will continue to be lazy.
I truly believe that William is livid that Harry left the UK for the US because he expected Harry to take on some of the ‘donkey’ work that he ( William) couldn’t be bothered to do .
William wants to enjoy all the perks but doesn’t want to do the hard graft

stillavid · 20/08/2025 19:03

I can do most of the things you mention @LifeOfAShowGirl as can so many people but thank god I don't have to worry about people hacking into my medical records.

Would you want their life? I don't mean that in a snarky way but just interested as it seems awful to me

I’ve been on it all day because I’m working out my notice at work and bored as hell.

Dear me. Not giving those who pay you value for money, are you? Some people feel quite strongly about that. In fact ....you feel quite strongly about that. Interesting.

This is real for certain groups of people in the uk who are not as rich as the Royals but wish eg to keep their career going while still having a family. Don't be so rude to me and tell me to get real. We obviously move in different sectors.

If it seems awful then why support the institution and doom poor George, Charlotte and Louis to it?

I have two days left. I’ve billed three times my salary in three months. I’d say I’ve given value for money 😉

Anything Katie Nicholl (who worked at the Daily Mail at the time) says should be taken with a grain of salt. But even if she was right and really did see this advertisement, a night nurse for three months is not unreasonable. Catherine's mother didn’t move in with them. When George was born, they stayed with her parents for a couple of weeks, and her mother visited and stayed for a few days here and there when they lived in Wales. What did you expect her to do—travel to Wales and back in the same day? They’ve had the same nanny since George was 8 months old. And why is that considered 'not a good look'? What nonsense. You’re all over this thread, commenting with misinformation—from their work engagement numbers to this.

It was one example. Maybe they don't work and want a helping hand or cba to get up in the night.
