William's non attendance to important events

Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

William and Kate always seem to do very little - for years and years in fact.

IAmATorturedPoet · 20/08/2025 14:20

I think you may have read too much into that.

I thought so ! Who knew “yes” could mean so many things.
obviously if William steps down George is next!
a monarch can only abdicate for himself.

HerLivingontheHill · 20/08/2025 14:27

Like many others have pointed out, they’ve spent the last 15 years trying to say how they’re just like any other family. When they were in Anglesey they tried it on, that Kate was like any other forces wife (I am not begrudging the work that William did. It was good, but she wasn’t like another other forces wife). Then they had the children and it was all “oh I wish we knew how to deal with toddler tantrums!” and claiming they were like any other parents. If you’re going to pretend you’re like a normal family, people will expect you to behave like one.

This is just your opinion- not fact.

They've not spent 15 years 'trying to say' they are like anyone or anything.
That's just your take on their lives.

It's hard to know if you enjoy twisting the facts for pleasure and to kick them, or you can't really understand .

The context of the RF with the late Queen and Philip is that they were often perceived as very hands-off parents. (I'm old enough to know this compared to many others on MN.)

The outcome of that supposed 'distance and formality' has been seen as a contributor to a somewhat dysfunctional family, where all the children bar one are divorced, had affairs, remarried etc.

The criticism came to a head when Diana died as the public thought that the Queen and D of E were not showing enough emotion or 'normality'.

Given the trauma of his childhood, William is trying hard to be a hands-on Dad while he can. He's trying to balance being a Dad, P of W, and supporting his wife who has had treatment for cancer. Oh and let's not forget his brother - the Spare.

They want to give their children as normal a childhood as possible, hoping no doubt to avoid the outcomes of the previous generations .

They are alike in the sense their children have tantrums. So yes, they have the same issues as other families.

Being Royal doesn't mean you escape the issues that come with having 3 kids. Yes, you have money to buy help or whatever, but you are also in the spotlight whatever you do.

We don't know how the King is. My guess is he's allowing William as much freedom as possible at the moment. The expectation was that C might live as long as his parents, close to 100, but if that's not the case the full weight of being King will come to William far sooner than anyone expected.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/08/2025 14:28

William being held to a higher standard than Harry (or Andrew for that matter) really shouldn’t surprise anyone.

He needs to fire whoever it is who’s in charge of his diary that allowed VJ 80 to be overlooked. It was a nice easy win, a day max to go somewhere and be seen as a King in waiting. He’d get to wear his medals and look regal. It’s such an easy one to get right.

Poor decision.

jeffgoldblum · 20/08/2025 14:21

It was automatically passed to him when Charles became king.

From the left hand side, I believe.

Aethelredtheunsteady · 20/08/2025 14:29

It always baffles me how royalists are so quick to point out how difficult the royal family’s lives are and yet still want the institution to continue. If being a working royal is such a trial that they deserve the endless privileges then why would you want the poor children to grow up in that system? Surely the best thing for them all is to abdicate and live off their estates (if they apparently cost us so little) where they can live as private citizens and George could grow up to be a lawyer or a dentist or an artist or whatever he wants.

jeffgoldblum · 20/08/2025 14:29

Aethelredtheunsteady · 20/08/2025 14:25

Exactly - accident of birth! What has he actually done to deserve all the vast wealth, privilege and forelock tugging?!

Almost all people on earth are in the position they are by an accident of birth! , some are just more lucky than others, afterall many of us here could have been born in countries currently at war or suffering from famine.
and in this day and age I am yet to see anyone “forelock” tugging.

justasking111 · 20/08/2025 14:29

I don't expect to see much of them until school goes back. Maybe Balmoral Sunday church service if they're visiting. MPs aren't sitting so we don't see them either. Foreign royals disappear as do many rich people.

Bringing up 3 children in your 30s and early 40s is not 'doing little' as any parent will tell you!

Harry has a thread dedicated to him slagging him off for sending a wreath for VJ Day.

That’s not entirely true. The dichy is owned by the Crown ie us but we agree that the income goes to the Prince of wales. Parliament could just as easily decree that it doesn’t any more.

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 20/08/2025 13:28

You know who else had young children and some even a wife with cancer? The soldiers who fought in the Pacific campaign and made VJ day possible. Glad they didn't take that attitude.

Quite.

jeffgoldblum · 20/08/2025 14:31

Spectre8 · 20/08/2025 14:24

So that role do you think he should be doing, whilst he is waiting to be King and then when he is King what are your expectations of his role?

Flattered but not interested, sorry.

BoudiccaRuled · 20/08/2025 14:31

It's obviously fine if William and Catherine choose to become private citizens, but until that time they have to pull their weight or the public will wonder what on earth we are paying them for, and treat them with the disdain they deserve.
William has always had an unfortunate sulky, spoilt expression, which isn't improving with age. It seems they are now using Catherine's cancer as the excuse they always wanted to be, frankly, lazy. The majority of cancer sufferers may find this pretty bloody insulting, to say the least - I know I do!
If they want a scandi model, then they have to downsize on their luxuries accordingly, and expect to muck in a lot more like us normal folk.
You're either royal or you aren't. Rough with smooth etc.
I'm sure it seems unfair to them, but life is unfair for everyone in many ways. Theirs really isn't that unfair...

hangerup · 20/08/2025 14:31

I do find the craziness entertaining though.

KatherineParr · 20/08/2025 14:31

I don't think it's fair to criticise William's staff. They can advise him what events to attend/not attend but William and Kate will have the final call on what they do, and they shouldn't really need to be told that the VJ anniversary was a big deal.

Well William is the future King the others are spares so yes there would be different standards each would be held up to

No, I slagged him off for his press release about it. BTW, my father served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific in WWII. We celebrated Veteran's Day in the US but not VJ day.

But they aren't the average parents unless the average ones don't work and have staff?

Wackadaywideawake · 20/08/2025 14:36

Maybe Catherine isn’t as well as they would like us to believe. They have three children who may, or may not, be finding it difficult to cope.

Maybe they’re saying f* it let’s just enjoy life and see what we can get away with.

Maybe there is a lot going on behind the scenes that we know nothing about.

My point being, we honestly don’t know so it is pointless speculating.

Okay…? You’re not a royal who will soon be head of the armed forces, how your father wishes to mark the passing of these occasions is his prerogative. But William will be king, and he will be head of the armed forces.

Loads of people manage to do it while also doing full time jobs…
