William's non attendance to important events

Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

Oh I would say the answer was “yes” .

The idea that I dislike the Wales family because I’m a rabid Sussex fan is pretty funny. Ever considered some of us are just anti-monarchy in general and believe that in 2025 we shouldn’t have one?

LifeOfAShowGirl · 20/08/2025 13:43

Sure but many of the people at these schools have at least worked for their wealth. The entire point is William doesn’t like working very much

A lot haven't or they have worked for some of it but have benefited a lot from family money - hence it is frequently the fifth generation at the same school.

jeffgoldblum · 20/08/2025 13:48

hangerup · 20/08/2025 13:42

They are rich , they don’t need to work at all and even if the monarchy was abolished they would be rich and not need to work. people seem very invested in this idea that William and Catherine are lazy ! where does this come from?

Why are you so invested @jeffgoldblum that people think they are lazy or not? Why are you on a thread defending strangers? Fair enough, you love them. But why would you find it strange others aren't as enamoured with them as you are?

🤣 I don’t love them 🤣
but the reasons for criticism from half of these posters are not coming from a rational or neutral place.

Tiswa · 20/08/2025 13:49

No that is the expectation of being a King simple as.

the current Royal Family are being held up by a set of working Royals for whom the youngest is 60 and the oldest is nearly 90

there is a rising support amongst the 18-24 age group about a republic support whether you like it or not is literally dying out

Tutorpuzzle · 20/08/2025 13:49

You are being irrational , @jeffgoldblum . If there was no royal family there would be no security needed.

Why do we need a separate head of state from the PM?

Calm down and think a little more critically.

So not publicly funded?

stillavid · 20/08/2025 13:51

Maybe this is all part of William's master plan to get rid of the RF from the inside - do less and less until we realise one day that we actually haven't seen them for a couple of years.

Honestly I do not see how he could possibly want his children to inherit. I shudder to think how the press are going to treat Charlotte in particular in the coming years.

You're probably right, jeff, but I'm struggling to see how having the heir's brother step in would be "for the family to deal with"

I'd expect the repercussions to spread rather wider than that, but luckily I doubt it'll happen and instead they'll continue for now no matter what William does

It wouldn’t be as simple as William just leaving one day.

It is totally feasible for the family to sit down together, realise they serve little to no public function now, and step down together.

Funny you jumped to interpret my post to that! 🤣

@LifeOfAShowGirl A republic is a solution but not one that ends up fawning over a President who hasn’t a clue!

I would need a convincing argument as to how a republic would work (in the UK in Australia/NZ etc I would remove them in a heartbeat - Canada given Trumps desire to have them become a state it becomes trickier) but I think William is making it easoer

It would be absolutely farcical if he were allowed to be king. I’m sure his grandmother, who worked until two days before her death, would be rolling in her grave.

I wish, @LifeOfAShowGirl, but unfortunately I really can't see them doing that

Who do you think was bothered?

Someone on another thread who works with veteran associations said it went down really badly

Many of us have close links to our fathers and grandfathers who served in the Second World War - so, yes it's personal for us. Whatever one thinks of King Charles, he has always worked hard, done some amazing stuff e.g. the Princes (now Kings) Trust which has helped many young people. And of course he turns up on occasions like this, as it is his duty to do so.

Of course Prince William should have personally attended one of the VJ80 years events, it is his duty to do so also, as heir to the throne. The nearly 80 year old Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were at one such event. In my opinion it was very bad form indeed he was absent, and it hasn't gone down well at all.

Because their egos are too big.

Tutorpuzzle · 20/08/2025 13:55

Ireland’s system works pretty well @Tiswa , if we must have a president.

France too. (I don’t wish the RF to be decapitated though, just saying!)

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 20/08/2025 13:57

People are comparing them to normal family because they've spent the last decade or so with the whole "oh look relatable we are.. we're just like yoooou" the Daily Mail are especially guilty of this. We know they're not the same and that's fine and expected but they absolutely cannot have their cake and eat it.

SpidersAreShitheads · 20/08/2025 13:57

LifeOfAShowGirl · 20/08/2025 13:41

I’ll happily say good things about them - I think Kate’s work around maternal mental health is brilliant, especially given her issues around pregnancy.

however I don’t think the good they do means they can never be criticised.

No, but criticism should be fair, balanced, and informed - which very little on this thread seems to be.

And I would say that about anyone, even someone that I don’t like.

I understand some people like to speculate, but there are some posters here who seem utterly convinced they’re spouting cold, hard facts when the truth is that none of us know what’s currently going on.

I also think there’s a lot of jealousy. Why should Catherine be allowed to work so little and still have holidays when most people can’t do that?! That’s literally what’s being said here. It’s mad.

She’s in a wealthy, privileged family and I don’t begrudge her that. It would be lovely if we could all do the same. I care for three disabled family members and work, I’m exhausted. I haven’t had a holiday since 2013. As I said before, it’s not a race to the bottom but some people seem incapable of just being happy that someone else has an easier life. If Catherine stopped going on holiday, she’d still have a more affluent and privileged life. I still wouldn’t be going on holiday.

If people want to argue for a Republican state, that’s fine. But singling out a woman who appears to still be struggling with the after effects of cancer (physically and/or psychologically??) and who has three young children seems nothing less than sour.

I’m very calm ! 🤣 but you clearly have not thought about just what is needed to untangle the monarchy from parliament and our country and history!
if you thought brexit was bad ! 🤣
not to mention apart from a very vocal minority many people don’t want a republic or don’t care enough to upset the Apple cart!
your opinions are yours alone, other opinions are available.

tara66 · 20/08/2025 13:57

I wonder how many hours a week W ''works'' compared to the average Jo? Most ordinary working fathers probably only see their children briefly in mornings and then about 3 hours in evenings plus week ends. So really this ''being with children more'' thing for him is a luxury/excuse??

Yes, my grandfather fought in Africa (I know it’s not Japan, before anyone launches at me) and like other posters, the impact it had on his family was awful. He went as an amazing, loving dad, and the man who returned was a shell of his former self. It does feel very odd that William and Kate couldn’t even turn up for a two hour ceremony. Especially when you see how much it meant to the veterans.

Like many others have pointed out, they’ve spent the last 15 years trying to say how they’re just like any other family. When they were in Anglesey they tried it on, that Kate was like any other forces wife (I am not begrudging the work that William did. It was good, but she wasn’t like another other forces wife). Then they had the children and it was all “oh I wish we knew how to deal with toddler tantrums!” and claiming they were like any other parents. If you’re going to pretend you’re like a normal family, people will expect you to behave like one.

I don’t know what the accusation is here but I find it utterly bizarre! I’ve not posted on the RF threads before, I commented on this one because I’m bored at work and it popped up on my active thread!

Tutorpuzzle · 20/08/2025 14:01

You are the literal opposite of calm, @jeffgoldblum , and people who like a reasonable debate don’t seem to be rising to you. Which seems to be annoying you further.
